Scientologists Defend Travolta and Their Religion

With all the recent press surrounding the unfortunate death of John Travolta's son, Jett, Scientologists are now speaking out about the incident.
And by "Scientologists" we mean Lisa Marie Presley. Tom Cruise has wisely remained mum on the tragedy, at least publicly.
Presley took to her MySpace Celebrity blog and this is what she has to say:
Now Is Not The Time.
I wished I could be writing you under happier circumstances but I cannot because Two of my very good friends, (John and Kelly Travolta ) the sweetest people in the world have just encountered the worst possible tragedy a parent could be forced to endure, the death of their son Jett.
My heart is crying and bleeding for them.
I personally would not have it in me to bury my own child.
I am writing this because I have noticed that for the most part, people and the media have been very sympathetic and respectful, but there are those certain ones that want to use this horrible tragedy as an opportunity to once again, blame and or attack Scientology?
Folks, as popular as it has been to discriminate and ridicule Scientology and Scientologist's in the recent past , Now is NOT the time.
I realize that there is a lot of mis information out there about the subject which has caused a lot of stone throwing but we are not still in the dark ages and it is still an Unconstitutional Injustice to partake in and encourage such condemnation.
Among most of the crazy made up garbage that goes around about it , It is not true that Scientologist's "Don't believe in " medical care , medicine or medical Doctors and that may have something to do with this terrible tragedy.
Just like anyone else, If one is sick , they go to the doctor, If a medication will make it better then they take it.
If they don't then they are an idiot and you can't blame their religion.
Whatever medical and or physical condition Jett had , I can tell you first hand that his parents were on a tireless, never ending quest to get and provide him with the absolute best care anyone could ever ask for and need, Medically, physically, emotionally, medicinally and spiritually.
I am not writing this to preach my beliefs, I am here to protect my friends.
To the few of you out there that this may apply to,
Let's not use the tragic death of a child to facilitate your insatiable need to attack and destroy Scientology shall we?
John and Kelly have done nothing but spend their lives and their time helping others, making people happy and making peoples lives better.
Please let this family grieve in peace.

It was a very well written article. I comend her for taking time out of her busy life to fill us in on her point of view. In this tragic event perhaps some good can come of it. Maybe we will get some more information on the religion scientology. I for one didn't realize that they do indeed seek medical attention, I truly thought it was against thier religion. Thank you LMP for shedding some light on this issue.

It's fair comment from Lisa-Marie to defend her "religion", but I just think it's a shame that amongst all the attention on the Travoltas, their daughter Ella has lost a brother and she's probably going to need therapy which their beliefs don't allow. Also you just have to look at Katie Holmes pre- and post-Scientology and the amount of money you have to spend to join to realise that there's something very wrong at the heart of that "religion".
While I agree with *some* of what she said, I have to point out that it is NOT unconstitutional to criticize someone's religious beliefs. If you are afraid that someone's religious beliefs are causing harm, you have EVERY RIGHT to talk about it, point it out, and criticize it. Religion is not and should not be put in some bubble of protection from criticism.
That being said, I do not think that John and Kelly withheld appropriate treatment for Jett for his seizures. But treatment for his autism is another story altogether…
I don't know anything about Scientology; however, I agree w/ LMP that it's not appropriate, or kind, to use this tragedy as an opportunity to get on a soapbox. I do take issue, however, with one thing she said: "it is an Unconstitutional Injustice to partake in and encourage such condemnation." No it isn't. The First Amendment provides the free exercise of religion which means that people are free to practice their religion w/o the government discriminating against them. Through Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, certain employers also cannot discriminate against individuals on the basis of their religion. The First Amendment, however, also provides the freedom of speech, which means we average joes can opine as much as we want about Scientology or any other religion or issue (so long as it does not threaten people’s safety (like yelling “Fire!” in a movie theater or inciting violence at a rally). Sorry, just had to get that out there . . . I am so OVER celebrities misinterpreting the First Amendment and how we don’t have the right to criticize what they believe in (or how crappy their “artistry” is) . . . arrrhhh!!!
But, re: Scientology and the Travoltas – I know nothing about Scientology, and my prayers are with the Travolta family and I hope people give them the privacy and respect to grieve this horrible tragedy. God bless them, nobody should ever have to go through what they’re going through.

I think she wrote a very articulate, heartfelt post in defense of her friends who are going through a horrible nightmare. She is absolutely right in everything that she said and I applaud her for taking a stand for her friends. I agree. The Travoltas need their privacy at a time like this. It isn't fair that they would have to deal with religious things. However, journalists have a right to speculate. Hopefully, misinformation will be cleared up. What would be tragic is if John Travolta is held responsible for the death. And concluding such is not fair at this time.
However, I don't think religions are always granted constitutional rights and respect. It would be nice if there was more respect for religion.

I am no fan of Scientology, but I don’t think that it is fair to lay blame of Jett’s death on the religion or his parents. I would like to believe that no matter what their religion dictates that John and Kelly would put the overall health of their children first. No one deserves to lose their child and I think that we should all leave the Travolta family alone and allow them to grieve.

Wow. I'm a bit surprised at how poor her grammatical skills are. Each paragraph was one LONG, run-on sentence. It was hard to read. Other than that, I give her props for trying to stick up for her friends. I definitely don't agree with everything concerning Jett's care, at least with what the media has made public.
