One Detroit elementary school is in such need of money and basics that it is asking for donations of toilet paper and lightbulbs.

We feel sorry for the kids there!

Detroit is The Perfect Example of a black run area. I don't wish to add anything or feel anything needs to be added to that comment?
If you feel that is good or bad, that is your opinion? Soon the USA might resemble Detroit ?

Muslims don't use toilet paper. Let'm lay skidmarks, in the dark.

i'm in the detroit area and i was just talking to a teacher over the break about how a lot of the schools don't have the necessities.

I think it's a backlash - the "education" call has been used so much in past, for everything from political agendas to PTA dramas. As my kids have grown, I've watched this for lots o' years. Seems like, lately at least, people have been less willing to be guilted into increasing education funding, thus the backlash.

The schools aren't poor. The money for schools is being skimmed/stolen/paid to the Administrators, who made at least six figures a year and do nothing. In my state, we have MORE administrators than teachers, I kid you not.

Until we kill all the administrators, our public schools will continue to be cash cows for a very few who are destroying public education.

Utah is the only state with any sense. They have one administrator. ONE And they do very well educating their children. Not fond of the religion, but they don't let administrators steal from the children.

You mean to tell me that the school department in Detroit can't afford toilet paper??? Perhaps some of the teachers and administrators can take a salary reduction to help the children out. This is getting insane, not being able to use the bathroom because there isn't any sanitary way for them to clean themselves is wrong. This is the United States, not a third world country, but it looks like we may just be on our way to being third world. THIS IS JUST PLAIN WRONG AND IN HUMANE!!

Schools in Miami-Dade County are facing the same type of problems, with funding issues and the school board being entirely corrupt. Just thought I'd bring that up.

Americaaaaaa, FUCK YEAH! Richest nation on the Earth, yet somehow we can't afford to repair schools that are falling down around the students or provide textbooks that aren't 10+ years old.

I'm glad to know that we can afford to spend trillions on CEOs and their defunct companies and neverending wars, though.

  19. 19

well, too bad.. first we need to give money to the automakers, then, if there's anything left over, the schools can get that. unless of course some other company decides it needs more of our money. it's really a shame that rich guys will always be more important than education. always.

I had harrybalsac donate at the office for me

This is bad. I have a friend who is a teacher and she say's a lot is going on and she is lucky to have a job. Whoa!

The sad truth is is that our entire educational system, top to bottom, is broken. We care more for just about everything than our children and their welfare. And yet we wonder why the kids of today are graduating half illiterate!

  23. 23

If Detroit can manage to not have any more Corrupt politicians stealing money from the people, the schools, etc. and don't end up with another law breaking loser for a mayor they might be able to buy toilet paper. But that won't happen in my lifetime. PS… The last one out of Michigan shut the lights off!!!

  24. 24

if you feel so sorry why don't you get off your ass and donate to the school instead of just writing about it?

  25. 25

Disgusting! This is why America is no longer the great country it used to be! No medical and now no proper education.

  26. 26

why don't you make THIS COUNTRY one of your worthwhile causes since we are the people who have made you rich?

  27. 27

Kwame Kilpatrick should prostitute himself for toilette paper and light blubs.

  28. 28

…and this is in the supposedly wealthiest country in the world? hahahahhhahaha. America is nothing but garbage wrapped in glitter paper and tinsel.

  29. 29

This is just one way that detroit is really fucked up and although the majority of the poverty is in the black ghetto I see alot of Latinos and whites as well living in the most fucked up conditions. It is disgusting to see detroit and how corrupt goverment is. Thanks for talking about this. Keep showing how fucked we are here.

I am a teacher for Detroit Public Schools, and this story is true. This is a problem for not just one elementary school, but all (there is over 200)! To those of you those of you that are quick to suggest teachers take concessions, I challenge you to come teach in my classroom for one month…I'm pretty sure you would not last one day! Detroit Public Schools are one of the lowest paying districts in the state, not to mention I probably spend $500 a year of my own money to buy supplies for these children. Basic necessities like crayons, pencils, soap and toilet paper!

  31. 31

My 6 year old little bro tells me that the local news was at his school because they have no toilet paper. I could not believe it. He attends this school. Sad.

I knew a teacher from Michigan. They treated her badly and laid her off and a lot of other good teachers also, without warning. Many lost everything, just in the last 3 to 6 months. The school district knew that they would have to lay people off because they didn't have the budget to pay them, but instead of telling these people in advance, last May and June, so they could get other jobs elsewhere, they said nothing. In September, I sent my friend school supplies for her and her students, she was hoping to teach a 3rd grade class. Then she found out that her promised assignment would not come to be…and she lost everything…and as a collateral damage, I lost her.

At the rate Michigan is collapsing and the over 300 people a week moving from here. We will be the state that people come back to, to see where people once lived. It will be a baren waste land of nothingness. Alaska will end up with more population than Michigan.
