Viva la France!

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has unveiled new measures intended to promote French culture, arts, and history.

If you're a teacher or aged 25 or under you can now visit any public museum in France free of charge.

Sarkozy also announced plans to establish a new national history museum at some "symbolic site."

"Emblematic great monuments, cathedrals, abbeys and small town monuments" (read: tourist traps!) are also receiving a nice kick of cash, as the annual national heritage budget will receive a boost to the tune of 100 million euros, with priority given to those sites.

These are only a few of the new measures aimed toward the excellence in the arts.

Perez, love you BUUUUTT…there is nothing touristy about "…monuments, cathedrals, abbeys and small town monuments…" in France. If anything, we are the visiting exhibits.
    Cheers

  25. 25

That's great, but I was just there and most of the museums were already free; including La Louvre which was already free if you under 26 on Friday nights

  26. 26

I wish they'd done that when I was there a couple years ago! It would have been pretty amazing if the Louvre was FREE!

  27. 27

Re: Sweetpiece! – i think she must be too distraught over the financial issues over at neimans……..poor dear

  28. 28

    Who is this sculptor by?

  29. 29

I like the cultural update, but you should have picked a better image to accompany it. While this sculpture may be in the Louvre, it is by a 19th century ITALIAN artist, Antonio Canova.

  30. 30

    It's "VivE la France", fucking AIDS-ravaged turd-pusher

  34. 34

    Ah shit.

I need to go to France now.

  35. 35

    ingeious!

  36. 36

Eros and Psyche is one of my favorite sculptures. I got to see it at the Louvre one day because I accidentally got off on the wrong train stop and was lost in Paris for a few hours while the rest of my highschool group got to see everything. So they felt bad, and let myself and a few others come see it for free on a day when they were supposed to be closed. We had the whole place to ourselves. France is def. one of the best art supporters.

  37. 37

p.s. to Arulen99…good observation. haha. Thats exactly what I was thinking.

  38. 38

I'm from Denver where the art museum is free every saturday. Students also get discounts all the time on everything from arts to free public transportation. I'm surprised more places don't do stuff like that.

  39. 39

What's that statue titled? It's lovely.

  40. slgee says – reply to this

    40

"Tourist traps"? Dude, have you even been to France? Since when are cathedrals "tourist traps"?
Also, lrn 2 French. It's "Vive la France!", not "Viva la France!".

  41. slgee says – reply to this

    41

    Re: pupcake
NO, it's VIVE, conjugated from the French "vivre", which means "to live".

Seriously… I think I went to Paris just to see that statue.

  52. 52

  55. 55

that sculpture reminds me of twilight.

  56. 56

This angel is a hybird that had sex with woman before Adam and Eve. God destroyed all of them back then. Can't have half angel, half human's running around, now could he? HAHA

  57. 57

    hi all :)
i didn't read all the comments so i don't know if anyone else has said what i will say…
in france, all the nationnal museums and a lot of the private ones are free of charges for teachers, people aged under 18 and art students for ages. the only new thing is that now the limit is 25 years.
one of the killing-time habit of parisian students is just to go to the louvre and enjoy getting lost in the small rooms on the upper floors…
france is great for the art lovers but eh, who am i to say that? i'm french!

  58. 58

it's VIVE, not viva, duuh! i mean, everyone knows that. except americans.
i really like you perez, but can't you even make the difference between spanish and french?? sooo american: like, everything thats not american, they dont care, they dont wanna learn.

  59. 59

Admission to just about all galleries and museums in the UK is free (apart from a separate charge for special exhibitions) - and no age restriction either..so beat that Sarkosy!

  60. 60

Re: harrybalsac – Hey French hater, get lost, you only write stupid comments. You should not be allowed to use the great French writer's name: Honoré de Balzac. Fock off idiot I hate you too.

  61. Lucie says – reply to this

    61

    it's "Vive la France" =)
and btw, the masterpiece in the picture is an Italian one ("Amore e Psiche" by Canova)

  62. 62

  63. Timmy says – reply to this

    Cupid & Psyche

  67. 67

    Re: ShaylaRCakes – I'm guessing that's a (well-deserved) stab at Quebec?

But yes… I'm in france right now, and honestly, so far, the art life is absolutely amazing!

  68. 68

  70. 70

    je hais sarko aussi !!!!!

  71. 71

Yeah Arulen99. I was wrong in thinking it was Bernini, but at least I recognized it was Italian, right? Should have known — Bernini uses elaborate, helixical forms, more motion. Anyway…

  72. 72

Hilton, if you want that extra layer of credibility, hire a proofreader.
    It's vive, Dear.

  73. 73

no, its not viva la france.
    its vive.
damn… you are such an ignorant.
