Even with one of the highest ticket prices on the threshold of an economic downturn, the Material Girl still raked in the big bucks with a whopping $120.1 million domestically and $281.6 million worldwide.

This is what I love about Madonna. With all the haters going on and on on how "over" she is, blah, blah, blah, she just ignores them all and just continues her merry way, breaking worldwide records and making truckloads of $$$$$$$$$. She continues to break her own records cuz there's no one else out there who can truly compete. $281 million in just 4 months is phenomenal. Imagine if she toured all year round like everyone else, she would make almost a billion. She's the Queen. Only the delusional refuse to accept it.

It's funny, but in your original post, all you can talk about is how much money she makes, but you don't talk about her singing or her music. When's the last time Madonna wrote a song on her own without outside collaborators? Produced an album on her own? I'll take women with real talent like Kate Bush and Tori Amos over Madonna any day–women who make music for the sake of it rather than trying sell millions of records. As far as Madonna's status as the top selling female artist, I can't speak for the bad taste of millions of people; after all, AMERICAN IDOL draws millions of viewers as well.

Exactly!! Personally I think being a top selling artist is overrated anyway. All it does give some fans bragging rights and puts millions of dollars in certain peoples' pockets that don't deserve it. I like being introduced to new obscure or underground artists or older artists that have been around for awhile of whom I never cared to listen until I accidentally discovered them, and I like introducing people to artists that they may have never heard of. You can't do that with Madonna, because she's so ingrained in the American psyche, unless you were living in a basement for the past 25 years without a radio or TV, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who has never heard of her or her songs. It's not like you can go up to one of your friends and go, "wow, you need to hear this artist. She is really brilliant and I think you should take a listen to her; her name is Madonna." Hell, even Kylie Minogue has that privilege, since she's still somewhat unknown in the U.S. Just saying.

Let's get real, people. I'm not trying to piss on Madonna's accomplishments, and making $281 mill is impressive, but she will probably stand to pocket a fraction of that. HARD CANDY was hardly a successful album by Madonna's standards. It only sold 5 million worldwide; she's used to selling more than that in the US alone. It didn't even go platinum in the U.S. and it only had one real hit, and I'm sure the big name producers on there didn't come cheap, so I would say she barely made above break-even on that album. That means most of the money last year came from touring. But have you seen how extravagant her show was (Madonna doesn't believe in simplicity)? Or the personnel list for her tour? It was probably about 2-3 pages long. After all the promoters, venues, managers, lawyers, dancers, band members, choreographes, set decoraters, costume decorators, lighting technicians, show directors, sound directors, make-up and hair people, animators, set technians, transportation costs, trainers, massuers, security, caterers, and the go-to people who wait on her hand and foot are paid, not to mention the IRS, state taxes and foreign taxes, she won't see anything close to the $281 million reported.

Also, as usual, Perez & Co. don't always give you the whole facts. Read the source article and it will tell you how those figures were calculated (based on album and ticket sales). If Madonna's album sales are $12 million during the year, that does not she earned $12 million; she just makes money off the royalties and mostly like an advance from her record co. (which probably isn't too bad). Just she doesn't pocket all the money she grossed in ticket sales. They also state in the article:

Everyone keeps saying Madonna's on top. On top of what? She has the biggest selling tour, and you queens get all giddy. It doesn't Madonna that most of the general public doesn't even remember her last album, and the last bonafide single she had was just as throwaway and forgettable (and wouldn't have been a hit without Justin Timberlake, who drowned her out on that song). Tour or no tour, there were other female artists that had albums that were much better on an artistic level (and some on a commercial level as well). Adele, Duffy, Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Beyonce, hell even Britney had a much better sounding album last year with more hit singles, and Madonna could only dream she had the voice and talent of some of those artists listed.
