Lost Losing Steam. New Season Premiere Down 25%

matthewfox.jpg

Wednesday night's TV ratings are in!

And, Lost's season premiere sucked more than expected, sadly.

Just 11.4 million took in the new season premiere.

That's 25% lower than the last season prem.

Apparently, the 'increasingly complex drama' was expected to drop, but not this much!

A lot of people we know gave up on Lost ages ago.

Are U still watching???

And why?

No. But I could love him.

    2. 2

      Never watched this show. NEXT!!

    3. 3

      I LOST INTEREST.

    4. 4

I still watch lost. I LOVE it. The third season sucked a lot, but last season made up for it, and I watched only half of the season premiere cause I had plans and didn't know it was a 2 hour premiere haha.

Anyone who hasn't watched this show should get into it, I swear it's worth it!

    5. 5

Lost is an AMAZING show, but its a show that requires commitment from its viewers because you need to see every episode to fully understand what is going on.

The viewership may be down but I don't think there is another show out there that carries a fan base as intense as that of LOST.

well the premiere was stupid because the first hour was stuff the watchers would know. i didnt want to hear the producers talk and i did not want to hear the storyline again. i just wanted the new episode!! plus they killed off the good people! season 2 storyline was best by far. i wish we learned about the island and saw stuff like that more instead of them getting off the island and returning. oh well, hopefully it will go back up.

    7. 7

You know what? I never thought of it… but from what I hear (I don't really care for the show) but a lot of people like to watch this show together to comment on it during the commercials. Like for instance, a radio station here had a "party" at a bar with a big screen and TONS of people went. You had to actually win tickets to get in to the place. So there's about 200+ people that would have watched it at home, but instead, watched it at the bar in a big group. So … yeah… possible that's why.

    8. 8

The reason all these shows appear to be loosing steam is online views and DVR. Ratings need to take this into account. I never watch shows as the air anymore.

    9. 9

Stupid ratings… who cares about ratings anyway. With this day and age, with the internet to watch the shows and DVR, etc… how are ratings even relevant anymore?

    10. 10

of course we're watching! best show on tv!!!!!!!!!

    11. 11

      Uhh ok

    12. 12

Sorry but they 'Lost' the plot with this ages ago!

    13. 13

I'm still watching…watched last night and WILL watch it until the last show. I watch it because you're never sure what's gonna happen next or how the characters will take it. AND, Sawyer….damn his naked chest and scowl. SEXY!!!!

    14. 14

No one in Arkansas got to see it last night because it was preempted by a basketball game……not even an Arkansas game!!! crummy channel 7!!!

    15. 15

I LOVE LOST!!!! My favourite show. A little confusing, but I like it better than 24.

    16. 16

i love it because of how insane the plot is.

    17. 17

Lost is a very confusing show if you are not a regular viewer. The show asks a lot of the viewer, the show has many twists and turns and you have to keep up with the plot or you will be lost lol I watched the show and they are starting to answer more of the questions, so thats good. If you want to watch a show that has a conclusion at the end of the show and everything has a happy ending, then Lost isn't for you.

    18. 18

      Re: zamechek.l@gmail.com
the new "currency" for tv ratings actually takes into account DVR viewing up to 3 days after the show has the original airing. so these early numbers won't account for that.

    19. 19

No I'm not watching. I'd rather watch Perez Hilton dye his hair

    20. 20

I'm still watching…and so are a lot of other people. Nielsen ratings are relics of a bygone era. This show is still one of better executed shows on network tv right now. I'm just glad it's contracted through the end of the series. ABC has been canceling a lot of their better quality shows, simply based on "ratings".

    21. 21

To bad the show was great last night and the hour before refreshed my memory

    22. 22

I still watch LOST because it is simply one of the best shows on television. Plain and simple. The producers and writers knew they were going to lose viewers. They had huge ratings and unlike gimmicky shows like Grey's Anatomy or CSI or Heroes, they decided to not play it safe and make a complex, epic, serialized drama. This, of course, drove away most viewers because Americans have the attention spans of French poodles and seem to watch the most mind-numbing shit on television (American Idol, Private Practice, Kath & Kim, Gary Unmarried, anyone?–the same applies to movies: Mall Cop? Seriously, America?)

Anyway, LOST is an extremely complicated show that requires viewers to have a lot of dedication and patience. In essence, LOST is a TV show for smart viewers who don't enjoy having shit shoveled down their mouths like Heroes viewers. That's the truth. If they're losing viewers because of that, then that's the producers' decision. At least they're fully aware of that. The show has been secured until 2010, a decision also made by the producers, so they can fully tell the story they have had in mind and planned out since VERY early on in the show's history. They fully plan on telling a full and vivid story and they're not going to fail. And, on top of that, they have a cult following. And that's basically why I still watch LOST, why it's one of television's best even after 5 seasons, and why they might have lost tons of viewers.

i love lost!!! I have to DVR it b/c I can't watch it in front of the kids

    24. 24

Never wathed this show until recently the hubby started watching it on Sci Fi and I am lost, I dont get it. Show is hella confusing!!

    25. 25

i know a lot of people who still watch lost. i watch it too. last season was GREAT. the premiere last night was a bit weird with all the time-jumping but it was still good.
the problem with ratings nowadays is so many people watch shows online and dvr/tivo things, so regular traditional "ratings" are extremely outdated and can't be relied on to account for the number of viewers a show has.

LOVE THIS SHOW. you should watch it too. more shirtless sawyer scenes please.

    28. 28

This show is amazing~ Anyone that stopped watching had to because Rock of Love is more their speed. "What! You mean I have to think when I watch TV, about something other than which chick is the biggest slut, or has the biggest boobs, Crazy talk"

    29. 29

Lost is amazing! You just have to watch every episode in order to understand what's going on… it's definitely not the kind of show that you can jump into mid-season

    30. 30

Perez can you post about people who work at Aflac? Thanks!

Re: Jen2u – Why not? I watch the show with my 8 and 10 yr old sons…

    32. 32

i think the decrease isnt necessarily true. i was debating whether or not to watch it last night because i'd rather watch it without commercials, so i wouldnt have to be kept in suspense. i feel like a lot of lost viewers would do the same things. once you're watching lost, there is no going back

    33. 33

      YES-because it is awesome!!

    34. 34

yes, i watch lost. the ratings are down because hardly anyone watches shows live anymore; they rather tivo them and watch them later without the commercials.

    35. 35

      lost kicks ass (:
i watch it because unlike most of the shows out there there's nothing like it.
it's unique and there are quite a few hot guys on the show…
or there were. until most of them got killed off…

    36. 36

Re: latinothunder24 – could not agree more - well said!

    37. 37

Im still watching because I have invested too much in it now! lol

    38. 38

The Lost premiere was frickin fantastic. I can understand, though, why it doesn't do well. It can certainly be a frustrating show. The whole idea of the show is to be frustrating and never really know what's going on..thus "Lost". I think us Lost fans are just gluttons for punishment.

    39. 39

LOST is the best show EVER!

    40. 40

I loves it! yes the quality isn't consistent but when it is good it is very very good.

    41. 41

No. Lost is just too complicated to watch!

    42. 42

LOST is a very special show with VERY loyal fans. we watch religously! BUT watching with commercials is sooooooo hard to do. id rather watch on dvd or online any day. we started watching the dvds after the 2nd season and got addicted to watching a lot all at one time! really the only reason to watch on tv is the pop ups for the repeats which are half the fun. trust me LOST fans havent gone anywhere!!!

    43. 43

hell yah i still watch lost. i know it would be easy to let go with all the breaks but that keeps me interested and thye try to keep you in the know by all the repeats going on. i lov e lost and wouldnt trade it

    44. 44

i love lost it is my favorite show. everyone tivos it because you have to watch it a few times. i don't believe the ratings. it was also 3 hours with the first 1 hour lead in.

    45. FMB says – reply to this

      45

Love this show, you never know what to expect next. So many twists and turns are constantly revealed, with flashbacks and forwards connecting plotlines, that it might hurt the average viewer's brain to have to think a bit more than normal TV. Was REALLY cool to see Michelle Rodriguez' character Ana-Lucia show up again last night…

    46. 46

Re: LizardKinG – lost interest? so did your partner long ago!

    47. 47

love lost. always have. its the only show on tv that i watch faithfully. tv just isnt good anymore. lost is something i have to record and watch just in case something comes up and i need to rewind.

    48. 48

LOVE LOVE LOVE this show!!! I highly recommend watching it and since they recap the crap out of it (annoying for faithful viewers but worth it since the storyline is pretty complex) and it's easy to catch up on.
Lost is definitely in a league of their own and I love talking with my friends the next day about it and trying to figure out all of the lost secrets and time-traveling craziness!
I can't get enough though sometimes it's hard to get back in the swing of things since there's so much time between seasons - that's my only complaint.

    49. 49

Totally still watching! Last year's season opener did poorly, as well. Just takes a few weeks for everyone to get back into it…

    50. 50

LOST is not a show you can just start watching. You have to have been there since epsidoe 1 or you will be completely confused, frustrated, and not understand what is happening. ABC probably should have thought about this before they picked up the show…but I'm a faithful fan. If anyone wants to start watching all the episodes are available at abc.com

    51. JD80 says – reply to this

      51

LOST is the best show on television right now - one of the only reasons I actually have cable. Unlike most shows on network tv, this series is intelligent! I appreciate a show that actually makes you think for a change. The people who don't get it or appreciate it either started watching it too late or just aren't that bright…sorry but it's the truth.

    52. 52

I agree it can be complicated but stick with it, this show is first class.

    53. 53

I'm still watching because next season (the sixth) will be its last. The producers are starting to wrap things up in the storylines.

That said, I wasn't terribly impressed by the two-hour premiere. Second half dragged, and the plot ran all over the place. The opening scene featuring a certain character was fun, though, but after that, everything steadily went downhill. Lots of scenes simply dragged out, which surprised me since LOST has typically has really tight writing with concise pacing.

    54. 54

Re: The REAL Orchidgirl! – lolololololololol your funny.

    55. 55

I still LOVE LOST!!!! You gotta watch it from the first season and stick to it or then i could see how you'd get "lost." ;P haha

    56. 56

i loveee this show. it's addictingg. you have to be pretty stupid to not be able to follow it.

    57. 57

Re: rachpsu – Agreed! You have to really watch careful. It's great if you are in the know. Love Jack, Sawyer and Desmond!

    58. 58

Well it was a great show then they killed off anna lucia and made it soooooo far fetched ..Whatever hope they end it before they cancel it

    59. 59

I really enjoy lost- It's more cerebral than 99% of the shows that are on the air. The plot does have a tendency to wane- I won't deny that- but at this point I just have to know what the hell is going on and how they're going to resolve it- I want that Ohhhhhhhhhhh moment!

    60. 108 says – reply to this

      60

i absolutely am obsessed with LOST! (so is my husband and both of our famliies!) it is the best show ever!!! it's clever, smart, dramatic, romantic and wonderfully complex.

and i agree with zamechek.l@gmail.com: dvrs and online episodes really effect the ratings of shows. there are a ton of shows that i watch religiously - but i watch them online.

    61. 61

      Re: rachpsu

I agree with this comment so hard.
      This show requires committment.
You need patience to watch it.
I seriously think about giving up every now and then, but when that episode comes on that answers an important question, I'm hooked all over again.

    62. 62

LOST is a brilliant show. It is really complex but that is the amazing part of it. I am a big big fan and I always ask people if they watch LOST and many stopped watching it because they got lost (ha!) in the plot and they thought it was too complicated.
Sorry folks, not all the shows are like Rock of Love Bus (hey I like that too). Some shows make u THINK. Some shows make you put 2 and 2 together and they expect u to figure out the answer.
Its not all lovey happy in LOST. People die. A LOT of them. Main characters we fell in love with… It sucks, but that happens in life too.
So please, stop saying u hate LOST because you are not smart enough to get it :P

    63. 63

the show sucks…its soooo annoying…like getting a big box with a pretty ribbon and you open the box to find a kidney bean inside…you're like…wtf?…next!

    64. 64

i just want to see how it all ends!!! kate has slept with both hot guys and cant commit, she should just die. i dont like that one minute im a tomboy, one minute im a hot sexy dolled up bitch routine, its old.
And sawyers body, what happened? he's still very doable. OFcourse Matthew fox is hot too. Id do them both, at the same time.
maybe juliette and sawyer will hookup? that would be kinda hot.

    65. 65

I LOVED last night premiere! I do have to say, as a loyal viewer, I have got a bit confused in the past, but last night I actually took notes and it makes sense and I'm more interested then ever!

    66. 66

I liked the show a lot the first two seasons but got "lost" after that. Whatever happened to the dinosaur? Anyway, it got way too confusing after that and I totally lost interest and so did everyone else I know. Too bad because it really had so much promise. I wish they'd stuck with the original premise and not gotten so carried away.

    67. 67

I really love LOST. It's my favorite show actually.. I don't watch it on TV, because of the commercials and then I have to wait another week.. I rather wait for the DVDbox..
I do get it why people stopped watching it though, because when you watch it on TV you see it once a week and you wanna know the answers and then you have to wait 17 weeks or more…

    68. 68

yep…I am still watching because it's a great show. Howver, I am really tired of these REALLY long breaks before the season premiere (think Lost, 24, the office, etc). Obviously, the world revolves around sporting events and playoffs.

    69. 69

too many characters, too many storylines that just trail off into thin air, too much jumping back and forth from past to present to future.

    70. 70

there are so many twists and turns on this show, I can't help but watch. I always try to guess what's going to happen, and I'm always totally wrong! I love not knowing what's gonna happen next! I'm going to keep watching until the end, and maybe even rent the old seasons again!

I've watched Lost since day one. Sometimes I have no idea what is happening or happened but like alot of us, you have to stick with it until the end. It's a great show…just wish I understood what is going on..LOL

    75. 75

I love lost. I have followed it since the beginning. It is a great show that is complex but keeps you jumping out of your seat. Sad to see it isn't doing well. Hopefully they don't cancel the show!!

    76. 76

Of course I still watch and I love it.. it's clearly only for those people that can understand complex shit. Which would be like 1% of your readers. lol.

    77. 77

I did watch Lost last night.
I was really looking forward to watching a new episode.
The experience was a bit of a let down.
I will be tuning in next week but the show can not live up to the hype.

    78. 78

Of course I still watch!!!… It's awesome and not that complex (if you follow the story and don't think too much about what may happen on the Mysterious Island)

Loooving it!!!!!! Can't wait to see what happens next!

    79. 79

      I still love lost!

    80. 80

the season premiere kicked serious ass!

    81. 81

The show is great. Who doesn't love spacetime??!? I believe the ratings are down because some people cannot concept the plot. It is a lot to take in, and some people think it is just fantasy bullshit.

    82. 82

Re: livelovemusic – cute way to put it. I agree, but I try to express my view with fewer insults.

    83. 83

      i still love lost
i dont know how people can stop watching…doesn't it kill you to not know what happens? dont you want to wait to get some answers??

Still watching and still enjoying…I think it's losing some viewers because you need half a brain to follow along. The ones who can't will be watching American Idol or whatever half ass reality bs that's on.

    86. 86

I love this show!! it is really hard to follow, but it has a great storyline and great characters. last night's show was AMAZING!

      87

Out of everything I watch Lost is my least favorite show. I only watch because I've stuck with it this long and want to see how it ends. I can't wait for it to be done.

    88. 88

i cant stop watching it. i watch it and i say 'what the fuck, i hate this show' but i always tune in to the next episode anyway. and sawyer makes me swoon.

    89. 89

Yes, I still watch… why? Because it is an intensely interesting show that requires patience, perceptiveness, and insight. Just because it isn't another piece of mindless entertainment revolving around rich teenagers and their money/drug/sex-filled angst, doesn't mean it's not worth watching. In fact, that's the primary reason it *is* worth watching.
Regarding what Afed44 said, that's very plausible… me and 6 of my friends all watched it together so we could talk about it during the break!

    90. 90

I love the show!!!! I think its had its good points and its bad points but now wea re finding out how everything and everyone is intertwined! Its getting better. I liked the premiere, glad the producers went over everything.

    91. 91

      DEFINITELY watched it!!
      It was amazing as always..
your always have to look into when it says
it starts at eight.. its normally an hour later
they always do a recap, which i don't really mind
      it was interesting anyway.
this show is one of the best things, on TV.

    92. 92

      I still watch!
I've invested too much time and energy not to see it through to the end, and anyway, it's really good.

    93. 93

What a great show… Like many others.. I had to DVR it… LOST is one of the only series on TV that you actually have to use your brain to be able to follow it… It's not for everyone…

HUGO IS THE MAN!!! He had soooo many great lines last night… I Love my Shit-Zu Shirt, "The island dissapeared, we all saw it, it's gone…bloop", To Sayid, "If you ate more comfort food you wouldn't have to kill people"… and the list goes on.. Jezuz and the part when he was telling his mom the truth…. OMG her face was pricelesss!!!!!! "Why is there a dead pakistani on my couch"!!! LOL's

The season premiere dragged a little bit and I will agree that the timing was not as tight as in other episodes.. but there were great scenes…there's A++ episodes and there's not so great episodes.. This was like a B+… take into consideration that the Season Finale was so freaking Awesome that it was going to be very difficult to top it…I went into this Season with not so high expectations….

      CANT WAIT TILL NEXT WEDNESDAY!!!

That's what you get when you take such a long hiatus. Last night's episode was AWESOME though. I'm looking forward to an uninterupted- writer-strike free season.

    95. 95

I'm shocked the ratings were down. I still watch and I definitely watched last night. It was good, the show is better than ever. I guess people didn't stick through the last few seasons.

    96. 96

I LOVE LOST! It gets complicated with the time traveling stuff but it is also fun thinking and dissecting theories. I love the 'old timer' characters and the new ones like Miles and Farraday. I'll watch till it ends. Shirtless, sarcastic Sawyer is and added bonus. ;-)

    97. 97

I watch it, record it and re-watch it. I love this show - best on tv. So sorry to all you "According to Jim" fans - it isn't brainless poorly acted crap - it is well-written and well-acted. I just wish ABC hadn't f-ed up the schedule.

    98. 98

at this point i have already invested so much time into it… that i have to keep watching… must keep watching, must keep watching- no matter how ridiculous it is now… but i still, deep down, where no one else can see… LOVE THIS FUCKING SHOW

    99. 99

I have watched it since day one and it's one of the best shows on t.v. it's like trying to solve a really complicated brain teezer. It requires you to stay sharp and remember previous episodes and tiny deatails and it's fun to share theories and predictions with other fans. With other shows you know everything about all the characters in the first episode, he has this super power or this doctor is emotionaly retarded it gets old and with Lost you learn something new about them in every episode and I love them all I dont know who's my favorite. Lost has the best fans for reals !!!

    100. 100

I stopped watching after season 2.
The "disappearing" island is a joke.

It's time to write the finale. Obviously, JJ has been working on other projects (Cloverfield, Star Trek) to put much into this show. It's time to call it a day.
