Disturbing Details From Fatal Virginia Tech Stabbing
As we mentioned yesterday, a female student was killed at a cafe on the Virginia Tech campus on Wednesday night.
Chinese grad student Haiyan Zhu was, thankfully detained by police before he could harm anyone else. He's been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail.
Now, more of the tragic details from the fatal stabbing have been released.
It turns out Zhu decapitated the student, a Chinese woman from Vermont getting her graduate degree at Virginia Tech.
The student was 22 year old Xin Yang from Beijing.
University officials stated that the students emergency contact records suggest that Yang and Zhu, who's from Ningbo, China, knew each other.
Yang had arrived at Virginia Tech recently in early January to begin her studies in accounting. As for Zhu, he was a PhD graduate student in agriculture and applied economics.
Virginia Tech spokesman Mark Owczarski confirmed Yang had been decapitated and added, “There were seven witnesses in the cafe. There had been no argument, no shouting. This is horrible and tragic. Especially when we know that Virginia Tech has got its share of hardship and horror.”
He's referring to the Virginia Tech Massacre back in 2007 when Cho Seung-Hui, a 23 year VT student from South Korea, shot 32 of his classmates and teachers before killing himself.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine said “The tragic attack on campus this week has no doubt revived terrible memories for countless members of the Hokie family."

It's not just asians - do we all forget the reporter that was decapitated by the poun-jabs back when the war was starting??? I never saw the video (prefer not to see things like that) but from what I hear they sawed at this man's neck to decapitate him. Don't put this on one race, that individual and anyone else that can carry out such a horrific action is plainly and purely sick. I live in Christiansburg, but workout in Blacksburg and we were talking about it today in the gym…apparently the guy was like sitting there holding her head when the cops came in like 2-3 minutes. They were really really quick to respond. I think a lot of what's been happening is just cases of people slipping through the system (Like Cho) and then people who just don't know how to deal with stress. I'll be curious to see what the motive was for this horrible event.

Today, in Belgium, a man ( 20 years) entered a day-nursery(crib) and in stabbed an adult and thirteen babies.
Two children died as well as one of the supervisors!
This kind of act was almost non-existent to us (belgium) but for some years the violence increases!

Everyone is so concerned about the safety at schools…i.e. safety alert systems and police response. What about prevention? Can you imagine being a PhD student at MIT….add on top of that an Asian background (Asian kids have way more pressure on them from their parents), plus the stereotype of the 'genius Asian' wouldnt you snap too? Even Caucasian grad students are like a kettle about to boil over. Schools need to focus of counseling services to help their students cope with the stress.

Re: Kate27 – At least two 911 calls went in, and a police officer showed up within one minute of the call being placed; she was the one that arrested him. The rest of the police force were there within four minutes of her arrival. Please do your research and more thoroughly read the articles before you make such ignorant comments about my fellow students at Virginia Tech.
To everyone saying we at Virginia Tech need heightened security: before April 16th and the events of the past couple days, we haven't had a murder on campus in over 30 years. Blacksburg is the safest place you'll ever visit. There are multiple students killed every year at the hands of other students at other colleges in Virginia, and the only reason that this story is news is because of the unfortunate timing of it all. Please think about what you say before you say it, as it's terrible for anyone to have to experience this, much less Tech. We're still healing from April 16th, we don't need your ignorance to contribute to our sadness.
a simular event happened here in Manitoba Canada this past summer ECEPT the asian guy beheaded another passenger on the Greyhound BUS! I thought the same way why did no one help but it all happened so fast and they had to keep the guy in the bus until the cops arvived from the closest town. The young guy he killed did nothing to provoke the mid aged asian man…creepy stories!
