But, here's something surprising. That fugly hat that Aretha wore on Tuesday with that huge freaking bow, well it's getting a lot of publicity. Obvs.
According to reports, Luke Song's Detroit hat shop has been receiving several requests for the hat.
The 36-year-old South Korean immigrant designer says the gray, felt hat, which has a Swarovski rhinestone-bordered bow, was all hand-molded for the Queen of Soul. It would cost more than $500 if it were made for sale.
Song's hats have been described as "mainstays among Detroit's stylish churchgoers." Though he wasn't prepared for the amount of requests he'd have after the inauguration.
Says the designer, "They want the same hat, but they understand, it's for the 'Queen' only. Ninety-nine percent said, 'That's fine. I'll get the next best thing.' "
So just what is his next best thing? Turns out it's a similar hat with a satin-ribbon that sells for $179.
That's $178 more than we'd pay for it!
People in Detroit, beware, the Aretha-inspired hats will soon be taking over your city!

For those of you who don't know, big hats are a MAJOR staple in the Black Baptist Church. Aretha Franklin is the daughter of a Baptist preacher. Go to any Black Baptist church in ANY city in the US, especially on a 1st Sunday and you will see hats that are SO EXTREME, that Aretha's hat looks like nothing. There are people who make MEGA-BUCKS designing hats for the 1st ladies, nurses, ushers and general members of these churches. Perez maybe you should do more research before you comment. Look at old pics of Mahalia Jackson, Coretta Scott King, etc. This is a tradition started decades ago and that still lives on. It is cultural and very well respected.

Hats have been a constant for African-American women since the days of slavery. The bolder, shinier and bigger the hat the more prestige an African-American woman feels as she enters a church service or civic affair. She's great and her voice has changed with the years, but hey, would you sing in front of 1.5 million people in bitter cold? As others have said, hats are cultural, for Black church-going women, and the English at Ascot. My mom, who was the original Jewish Princess, always wore hats…to her and many others, hats signified class and being well-dressed. So don't knock the hat - it's quite charming in its own way.

I thought her whole outfit looked not only appropriate but respectful, and worthy of respect. I also liked her rendition of “My Country Tis of Thee.” I liked all the ring-ring-rings and the free-free-frees. Her phrasing has always been original. She never had to copy Ella Fitzgerald, or anybody else, and she never had to dress like she might as well be selling it on a corner in the meat packing district. So basically, yeah, I thought she killed the song, and I don’t get the whole hoopla of negativity over her performance, or over her appearance. Anybody who knows anything about R&B or gospel or soul or jazz or just popular American music could appreciate the orchestration and improvisation presented by Aretha Franklin; anybody with any experience of East Coast weather in January could appreciate what that kind of cold could do to anybody’s voice that day, not to mention somebody nearly seventy years old, somebody old enough to have sung at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968. And she did, too, in case you didn’t know it!
