I have headaches everyday, and i am constantly worried and scared. And yeah, i'm 17 years old. I go to a shrink. And i get anti depressants, and i helps, TONS!

      Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. That means that there is something physically not right with the brain and it is lacking the proper amounts of certain chemicals to function properly. These imbalances can be genetic or caused by traumatic events. Either way, medicine is helpful and necessary.

      I myself have been diagnosed as clinically depressed since I was 13. After 15 years of taking anti-depressants, I have been able to learn successful coping skills and the depression has been declared in remission. I do believe that the brain can be rewired and the need for medicine can be eliminated through long hard work, ie. several years.

      However, not every one is as fortunate. My older brother has tried many times to get off of meds and has been unsuccessful. It is not something he can just buck up and get over. He would love to never take medicine again. But he doesn't like who he is without the medicine.

      While I do agree that there are some dangers in the field of psychiatry, having personally experienced them, I recognize that I do not represent every person suffering from depression. And I am not their doctor. We need to be sensitive to people's needs and conditions. Also, some medicine doesn't work on every person and can increase their depression, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't take medicine at all.

      Re: DKGIRL33 – you do realize that dianetics is just a figment of l. ron hubbard's imagination, right? just like scientology. why don't you go read a legitimate source of information–such as a medical journal–before spouting off such preposterous b.s.?? yes, there have been cases in very young people where anti-depressants have led to suicide.. that's why they have those warnings in the commercials not to take them until you're 18. also, not every anti-depressant works for every case of depression. when i took lexapro, i basically just fell asleep for days. however, when i switched to zoloft, the results were amazing. it took the edge off my pain and helped me get out of the bed in the morning and function. so if you seek amy, biatch.
