So, so, sad.

Mariana Bridi da Costa, the model/Brazilian Miss World finalist who had her feet and hands amputated in a bid to save her life, died on Saturday.

The model suffered from necrosis, or the fast deadening of tissue, caused by septicemia.

Septicemia, triggered by a bacterial infection, causes insufficient blood flow that can lead to organ failure.

"Unfortunately Mari couldn't resist any longer. She passed away at 3 a.m. today," said Henrique Fontes, executive director of Miss World Brazil, to the media via e-mail.

Our thoughts are with Miz da Costa's family and friends.

Also, some scary figures — septicemia is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., and unfortunately, doctors don't know too much about the ailment.

It kills approximately 800,000 in the US a year.

Please figure it out, docs! Keep us safe!

Sad. Wrong diagnosis led to her ultimate death. She was gorgeous!

  10. 10

Wow! Although I don't know this beautiful woman its scary to find out how many people this horrible bacterial infection kills. May she rest in peace now.

  19. 19

    thats really sad..

  20. 20

Her family needs to sue the Dr. that misdiagnosed her. She should have never died!

  21. 21

This is so awful!!! Poor girl, how could the doctors misdiagnose her with kidney stones? They usually do an ultra sound to see them, If she actaully had a urinary tract infection there would be no stones to see, Right? At least that has been the case with my family member. I feel so bad for her familia, to have to go through the sickness, the amputations and then finally the death. What a long nightmare. My heart goes out to them.
    R.I.P. Mari

  22. 22

    Intiresting…never knew about this.

  30. 30

    that is so sad, RIP

  31. 31

Perez got this on his dick….. :o )

  32. 32

How cruel and unfair life can seem to be at times. She thought she was just starting out in life but in reality her journey was almost over at 19. It doesn't make any sense to me how someone like this can die in such a manner and some other people whose only enjoyment in life seems to be hurting others can live on and on. They say someday we will know and understand, I hope this is true. RIP Young Angel..

  33. 33

Re: RedWingsFan – What happen to Linstrom and Dats??? HHEEEEEEE

  34. 34

WTF,YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.HOPEFULLY SHE'S IN PEACE NOW!!!

  35. 35

Very sad. I had hope she would make it. :(

  36. 36

    Haunting story.

  37. 37

Re: proloz32 – You speak for most people, a terrible tragedy indeed!

  38. 38

800k/year in the US alone? scary
I feel so sad for her, what she had to go through
    May she rest in peace

  39. 39

What a terrible tragedy. She had an undiagnosed UTI that could have been treated successfully with antibiotics if it had been detected in time.

  40. 40

Im so sorry to hear that. :(

    41

    Re: Mentalist

I totally agree. I guess the saying "the good ones go first" is true. She had her whole life ahead of her but it was taken away from her. So unfair.

  44. 44

yes kiddies..dont ignore those uti signs of infection. poor thing..

  45. 45

So,so sad. May she rest in peace.

  46. 46

This is so so so horrible… may she rest in peace :(

  47. 47

SO BEAUTIFUL, SO TRAGIC… REST IN PEACE CHILD

  48. 48

Im supriesed it wasn't because she was 2 skinny….

  49. 49

This is incredibly sad. If only those idiots at the hospital had diagnosed her correctly in the first place they could have caught it early and saved her life. Terrible shame such a young life lost.

  50. 50

We are all very sad here in Brazil… this tragedy chocked all of us!

  51. 51

OMG! Prayers to her family. Such a beautiful girl.

  52. 52

If this happens to 800 thousand people a year in the USA then why haven't we heard more about it until now? OH THAT'S RIGHT! She was pretty, so she's more important!!
IT'S ALWAYS SADDER WHEN THIS HAPPENS TO SOMEONE BEAUTIFUL!
    fuck off!

  53. 53

Re: john holmes – apology appreciated….but not expected…..isn't that what our little pink world is supposed to be about? :)

  54. 54

Why don't you tell the public what really killed her??
    ;
    A uterine tract infection!!!
    ;
Any UTI can get serious. You may think it's not cool to talk about or that it's just "one of those things" you get from tight jeans or having too much sex but if left untreated or undiagnosed, it can kill you and THAT'S WHAT REALLY HAPPENED to this poor young lady. She did not get diagnosed fast enough and and it rapidly progressed into something more serious.
    ;
Do your readers a favor, Mario, stop cutting and pasting the WRONG STUFF from CNN's site

    55

she was beautiful! I can't believe 800,000 people and Ive never even heard of it!! scary

  56. 56

Oh my god that is so scary!

  57. 57

All for the want of a simple Lysol Wipe . . .

  58. 58

    That is so sad. R.I.P.

Oh and to you ignorant sick people leaving stupid, rude comments, get a life. It is so scarry to think that there are so many sickos in the world. You guys/girls need help..get it instead of leaving your stupid, vulgar comments!

  59. 59

ay, Pobrecita! why must the young die!!

  60. 60

How sad to go like that and at such a young age. She had her life ahead of her, too. R.I.P. Mariana.

  61. 61

Perez, I could spank you! Septicemia is a generalizing term to describe an infection that enters the blood. It is not some rare isolated disease. We know TONS about it. In those 800k cases, approximately how many were over the age of 70 or had some type of preexisting condition that left them immunocompromised? I'd say upwards of 95%. To claim the life of someone so young this UTI (and it's URINARY TRACT INFECTION, not UTERINE) had to have been plaguing this girl for quite some time and the pseudomonas was likely contracted in the hospital. The "innacurate diagnosis" story makes me raise an eyebrow. What is healthcare like in this girl's country where they can diagnose kidney stones and not once dip her urine? She should've been placed on prophylactic antibiotics anyway. There are several missing details here, with the shock tactic news stories about MRSA and everything we do not need more people coming in to emergency rooms everytime it burns when they pee.

  62. 62

    So tragic, so young. :(

  63. 63

This is very sad ad also WAY too close to home! I had something like that, i had yeast and fungus in my blood from an infected pic line, that's an i.v that goes straight to you're heart, it was so scary and i almost lost my life too………..My thoughts go out to her family and anyone who knew her or is suffering from this

  64. 64

What a waste of a young life. So sad.

  65. Lene says – reply to this

    65

    rip. so sad!

  66. 66

so sad… to think we're so vulnerable and our life can end at any moment just like that…

  67. 67

    Re: omadhaun
She is in Brasil-a little different then a US big-city hospital. Perez stop with the pleas to "higher ups". I really don't think that the docs are going to make a move based on your plea. Also, when you do stories about medical issues, please make sure you have the facts straight. The shoddy reporting in this and "pop-medical knowledge" is what causes people to ask for antibiotics everytime they are sick, even with a virus and makes these bugs more resistant to antibiotics. Just comment on gossip or else get your facts straight.

  68. 68

    Unbelievably sad.
    .
    RIP

  69. 69

Sepsis is the 10th highest cause of death and doctors know how to treat it. Septicemia is something related but very different.

When you search for Septicemia on WikiPedia and it auto-forwards you to the Sepsis article, Perez, make sure you're reading the right thing before blogging it and embarrassing yourself.

  70. 70

Re: john holmes – Glad you apologized, it shows you have a good heart. Have a good day !

  71. Prick says – reply to this

    71

Perez, you're one fuckin' dumb dipshit.

Please don't talk about medicine. You obviously know nothing.

Where did you get that doctors don't know anything about it.

    It's a fuckin blood infection.

It can happen with any microorganism. Microorganisms evolve and adapt to become resistant to antiobiotics. It takes time for labwork to even ID what the mircoorganism is.

This girl simply ran out of time.

    People fuckin' die.

    It happens.

God, I really fuckin' hate you right now.

  72. 72

    that's so sad RIP

  73. 73

    Her family should def. sue.
    That's horrible.
I was hoping she'd get better.
She was beautiful and young and had sooo much to live for.

    RIP Beautiful.

  74. 74

OMG, this is too sad, RIP.

  75. 75

This is sooo sad and scary, we can't even trust doctors anymore??? Where was she missdiagnosed? In Brazil or in America??'

  76. 76

    R.I.P. Beautiful Girl :(

  77. 77

holy shit! that is scary as all hell. 800 000 a year? How come I've never even heard about it til now?

  78. eisus says – reply to this

    78

This is so sad and my heart goes out to her family and loved ones. One thing to keep in mind is that this illness only occurred in 98,000 people last year and I'm sure that not all of them passed away from this disease. Please don't panic, because fortunately this isn't common and most people who are afflicted are elderly (65 and older) or have compromised immune systems. It did not happen in 800,000 patients in the US last year.

  79. 79

It's actually not that hard to diagnose a urinary tract infection. The doctor who misdiagnosed her and the ones who butchered her afterward need to PAY! The last few weeks of her life must have been torture: losing her feet, then hands, then kidneys, then stomach, not being able to breathe on her own, but conscious at times. Jeebus, if there is such a thing as poetic justice, let it come to that medical staff.

Re: Mrs. Petunia Picklebottom – i like your dolly

  81. 81

So horrible. I feel so badly for her family.

  82. 82

    Re: Milk this….. – Thanks!

  83. 83

Thank-you so much perez for this post.

She was truly a beautiful person!!
becuase the cause of all of this wasn't immediantly known
It reduced the flow of oxygen to her limbs, causing her feet to be amputated last week and her hands this week. Part of Bridi's stomach was also removed as doctors tried to contain internal bleeding.

Bridi was not breathing on her own and was undergoing hemodialysis at a hospital in the city of Serra.
Bridi was twice a finalist in the Brazilian stage of the Miss World pageant.

    she will be greatly missed!!!

    ”Descanso em paz querida menina”
    ”rest in peace darling girl”

Re: belle123 – YOU ARE RIGHT ON ABOUT ANTIBIOTICS! My doctor will prescribe me just about anything I ask for, except antibiotics! He's a great doc and he knows about the overprescribing so he doesn't like to do it. He gave me 2 different nasal sprays for bronchitis and I thought he was full of shit and I wanted some antibiotics. No dice! Then I got home and researched and he made the right call. You don't need them for bronchitis. Any other doctor would give me antibiotics. We need more doctors like mine.

  88. 88

ah…………………………..that is so sad.A life taken too soon. beaufuil girl with a beauful soul. so sad. rest in peace

  93. 93

this happend to me for almost 2 years ago…. i got a bad infection in my foot, i woke up one day and my foot were swollen as hell, terrible pain… The doctorschad me under observation but they didnt know what it were…then it escallats pretty fast but i was lucky… The had to remove all the top skintissue from my foot and open up my leg almost up to the knee, but i were close to an amputation or even worse -death. i feel even more lucky now that i know what happend to mariana…. it´s so sick and scary and…painfulll ;( I KNOW….

  94. 94

I am sorry to read about her death as she did suffer before dying, can you imagine losing your hands and feet? I know I can not, but she is at last at peace, some would suggest she has been blessed. I do not know but have as a nurse seen many young people go before they have really seen the beauty of life. I pray for her family who are left behind to mourn her. Perez there is a great big world out there with wonderful people but you are not one of them.

  95. 95

Ummm septicemia isn't a disease….its a generalized condition produced by bacteria in the blood (bacteremia) and their toxins. It can pretty much be caused by any gram negative endotoxin producing bacteria. And the probable reason its the 10th leading cause of death is because anytime someone has an infection localized to the tissues and the bacteria gain access to the blood, septicemia can potentially occur.

  96. 96

    Re: john holmes
your a disgusting and fucked up individual!
    Shame on you!
