As we previously mentioned, Fox is butchering making an American version of beloved British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, the gay classic telling the sordid tales of Patsy and Edina.
Well, now Variety is reporting that Kristen Johnston is close to signing on to star in the show.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing????
The actress has won Emmys for her role on '90s sitcom 3rd Rock From the Sun.
Johnston table-read for the Fox execs on Friday. Shortly after they decided to pick up the American AbFab for a pilot. That doesn't guarantee the show will make it to the air or that Kristen will be in it.
Oh, yeah, and we buried the lead! Johnston would be playing the part of Edina (Jennifer Saunders' character).
Thoughts?????

No one should be playing these roles. Absolutely Fabulous worked because its humor is so fantastically British and Jennifer Saunders is simply awesome. Come up with your own ideas, stop stealing British shows!!
what they need to do is re-invent it. Rather than do some fox schlocky shit they should take it to HBO so they can do it right and make it Eddie and Pats - two gay older dudes - leave saffron as the daugther and go from there. I would say Colin Furth as Eddie Monsoon, Rupert Everett as Patrick Stone - nothing says struggling to be young as two gay older men -

Kristen hasn't got the chops to do it, her comedy's too American, but maybe that'll play here! She's seriously funny, but needs a better vehicle that's more suited to what she's good at!
They should keep the original series. With the exception of The Office I haven't heard of any british TV shows being successfully transfered to american TV.

Ab fab is my favorite show in this world. I hope they don't butcher it trying to make it palatable for mid America. (not that Canada is a whole lot better) Johnston would be better suited as Pats and yes I agree Mulally as Eddie would be perfect.
They should just not make it at all. Why do they have to remake things? They could just give those involved in original some $$ and credit by re-airing the amazingly great originials! They'd save some money not making a stinker.

Megan Mulally as Edina? No. And the only reason you think she'd be good in the part is because she played Karen on 'Will and Grace', who was also a drug/addict alcoholic with money. A fabulous character, and one of my favourites, but she's not right for Edina.

OMG she would be hilarious! She was awesome in Music and Lyrics, and she was recently in bride wars. She obviously wasn't the lead, but I think she deserves to be! This would be the perfect role for her….I've seen a few episodes of AbFab in the past, and that would be a perfect show for her.
I also agree it should be re-booted with two middle aged gay men. gays are into celebs, drugs, booze and staying young. I'm not sure if the same can be said for american women.
Nobody should ever, ever remake Ab Fab. The US version can never compare to the original……..to pc here…….drug use on primetime……drinking out of a vodka bottle… Selling your daughter for some pot while on vacation/holiday…..I think the fcc would actually step in. Really. Apart from Christine Baranski for the role of Patsy I don't see how its going to work. Ab Fab is part of British culture as much as Dr Who is (and I hope to god the US don't want that one reinvented) and the first is always the best. Jennifer Saunders absolutely owns that role. As do Joanna Lumley and Julia Sawalha as Patsy and Saffy respectively. I'm not comfortable with America fucking it up. Leave it alone! Watch it the way it is! We do!

No way American TV will do any justice to AbFab. That said, Kristen Johnson is one of the better choices they could find. Megan M would be great, too, but it would be a rehash of her "Karen" character from Will & Grace so she may not be interested.

kristen fits the idea of being pats than eddie. eddie has to be petit. i do so agree that meagan mulally play eddie. megan is the american version on jennifer saunders. they are both completely wonderful. but it will be hard to redo a fantastic show like ab fab.
Why mess with a classic? I still watch it on you tube. They are fabulously hilarious. Kristen would make a better Patsy than Eddie.
I can totally see her doing Patsy, but never Edina. Part of Edina's thing is she perceives herself as Fat and does have a bit of extra weight. I can't see Kristen getting into character to play that. That is, IF they MUST bother redoing the show. The original was wonderful (at least the first 2 or 3 seasons) and best left as is.
