Program Wants To Ship Hawaiian Homeless Back To The Mainland

We'll take their homeless if they take The Hills cast?????

Homeless service providers in Hawaii are asking the state for money to send homeless back to the Mainland.

There are already similar programs established on the Mainland which try to return homeless folk from where they came from. Apparently, a lot of people go to Hawaii seeking a new and better life but find that it can be quite expensive to sustain one's self on the islands. And then they're stuck.

Opponents of the proposal criticize the "return home" program as a ploy to simply ship the homeless somewhere else instead of dealing with the problem. Proponents praise the program as a strategy to help ease state expenses in the current economic crunch.

The program would actually be aimed at people who have recently arrived in Hawaii to find themselves unable to support themselves or save up for a ticket, which is actually a very small percentage of the homeless population.

The program would also make sure there are services waiting for the person on the Mainland, instead of just dumping them there, and that no one would be coerced into leaving.

Mahalo, bitches!

Put 'em on a raft, aim it toward China and give it a good shove.

as someone who lives in Hawaii I say YAY!! Perez is right, the bulk of the homeless population are native Hawaiians who're unable to afford housing (the avg single family home costs over 600,000 and that's for a pretty shitty looking house compared to elsewhere, damn paradise) So this really isn't changing a damn thing, but at least all these people from the mainland who are stuck now can have help out of their problems. Hawaii needs to do something like this if it ever wants to have the capability of helping he real homeless problem

  14. 14

    Send them to Iraq

  15. 15

    I agree w/ Topper!
Those people don't even like the fact the they are part of the United States; but when they need help they sure coming running. FUCK THAT! We have enough homeless here. DEAL W/ IT!

  16. 16

First off, wow, look at the height difference!

So we're spending money sending homeless people to Hawaii?
Why don't we spend this money on food, and volunteer work for making shelters or something for the homeless, and low income America?

This country seriously has issues, and it's all because we're a bunch of lazy fucks.

If there's any place I'd want to be a homeless person, it's Hawaii.

  18. 18

What no one points out is that a lot of the homeless in Hawaii are from Texas. The state of Texas, in an effort to cut the expense of supporting these people, figured out it was cheaper to dump them somewhere else. So they loaded up many planes with these poor unfortunates and sent them on a permanent vacation to Hawaii. Looking at the 3 feet of snow in my front yard, I WISH someone would send me on a vacation…….

So what do Samoa, Guam, Alaska and Puerto Rico do with their homeless?

    Where is Homeless Central?

  21. 21

Let's give this poor baglady a dollar!

  22. 22

THIS IS A JOKE !! I work with the homeless in Santa Monica CA, a small city with a HUGE homeless population. The "return" home program DOES NOT WORK. The issues that percipated these people to leave "home" in the first place are still present and all this does is shift the problem to another zip code. Hey Hawaii, here is an idea, try asking for money for more progams that support and promote, housing first or return to work or getting your population OFF DRUGS which is at epidemic proportions in Hawaii. It will do far more to help your problem then a plane ticket and a target gift card !!

If California could do this the state wouldn't be broke.

  24. 24

As someone who moved here from the mainland i agree with this proposal. All of you who have commented against this please dont say anything when you have no idea about the situation going on. You would hate it if i commented on something going on in your state if i didnt live there and didnt know the situation. I dont think people realize how small this island is. you can drive around the whole thing in a little over an hour. There are so many homeless people here that it is unreal. Everywhere you go there are homeless people. You cant go out and enjoy a day on the beach without a homeless person bothering you, you cant even step out of your house!

  25. 25

That makes no sense… we are already filled with mexicans and asians… where are we gonna put the Hawaiians??? Besides, anyone who has been to Hawaii knows how much native Hawaiians "like" us in mainland…

  26. 26

Re: Kelmiester – True… the 1st time i was in hawaii our hotel was near this peeps home and they where sooo rude it almost makes you don't wanna go back to hawaii…

  27. 27

First off you guys are fucking retarded thinking that its homeless hawaiians!! If you can actually read, the article states that its people who have arrived in Hawaii that cant afford to stay there. I live in Maui and I know that its all the white people who come over here, get all cracked out, cant find a job, a home and live on our beaches. We want them out and we want them out now!!

  28. 28

    Hot diggity.
So many of you really need to go back to Reading Comprehension basics, apparently.
    .
No one's suggesting homeless from Hawaii be shipped off to another state, becoming someone else's "problem". If you actually read the proposal, they're looking to provide those newcomers to the islands, who've found that Hawaii's a hella fucking expensive place to reside, the opportunity of returning home, instead of being stuck here. (Although, if there was any place to be homeless at, I'd opt for here too)
    .
This is a noble idea but yet still with a heaping spoonful of self-serving. We already have an epidemic of "local" homeless to deal with and provide for. This wreaks a new havoc, having to also add to the equation with the homelessness of mainlanders.
    .
Honestly, its got to suck to want to establish a new life is sunny Hawaii, only to find yourself screwed by an expensive community and eventually ending up homeless. Making it that much worse because family and friends, some form of comfort, is at the very least, 2,500+ miles away. I would hate to be in that kind of situation, which is why I believe this program is a good idea.

So, it's all good in the hood for us to have to deal with the influx of relocated homelessness?? It's ok for MY taxpayer dollars to provide MORE for it? Pfft.

You're right, we do have an enormous problem with drugs, especially in the homeless sector. Yes, we need more programs to reintroduce homeless into more structured enviroments. But we just do not have the space, nor the finances to continuously accommodate mainland homelessness.

Re: Kate27 – Good, we don't want you here. Don't come back. Or if you do, go stay Waianae.
Hawaii is so small, we can't handle mainland trash anymore. Then again, we do have a prison set up in Arizona.. Whatevers.

  31. 31

    Re: antiaphrodite – Yeah "whatevers"

  32. 32

first thing…M*I*A*R its spelled POI…not POY…get it straight. 2nd…you people in the mainland send your homeless our way when it comes the winter time since they flood the hospitals and shelters! So whats wrong with sending them back home? and this is for kelmeister…we recognize we are apart of the united states no doubt about that…but our monarchy/ancestors were wrongfully overthrown…so we are just looking for recognition because of the overthrow… the same way native americans are recognized. and thats your history lesson for the day!

  33. 33

Fuck the "homeless" they are all lazy bums. Put them in jail or send them to Afghanistan as front line infantry.

  34. 34

it sucks if you're homeless, you have no human rights.

  35. 35

How ’bout they just put the homeless on a boat, sail 20 miles into the Pacific, and kick 'em overboard? When did somebody moving to a place they can't afford become a government problem? Let the incompetent useless worthless no-talent motherfuckers find their own solution to the problem they put themselves in?

homeless in paradise? how is this possible?

    1. a palm tree
    2. a hammock
    3. a sharp stick

problem solved.. set up your hammock attached to the palm tree for shade and coverage.

Fish with your sharp stick… sounds like heaven and a great tan.

  37. 37

I thought that was an Olsen twin at first…. lol

  38. 38

Ismeralda Gretchen is right..it is a KNOWN fact that before the winter weather strikes the mainland, they send homeless people that are overpopulating the shelters there to Hawaii because they think that without the bitter cold &/or snow…they might make it in the world. WRONG! Hawaii does have one of the highest costs of living, ANYWHERE in the world. To you haoles you may think that "living in paradise…what's wrong with that!?" but actually it is ridiculous. I was born and raised here and don't find it bad when I have to pay $7 for a gallon of milk but if you're homeless here…GOOD LUCK. I think it's unfair that those people are dumped here…so all of you people saying that its OUR problem to DEAL WITH should really take a look if your state is sending YOUR homeless HERE. PAU!
