Time To Retire????

Despite hiring a new coach, dropping 15 lbs and bringing a renewed focus to his game….

Andy Roddick suffered a crushing defeat at the Australian Open today.

The American tennis player lost in straight sets to Roger Federer in the semi-finals.

It's been forever since Andy has reached the finals of a major.

Might be time to call it quits!

    shut up mario.

  6. 6

He's still earning millions playing in these tournaments. It would be stupid to retire. It would be like somebody telling you "Well Perez, you weren't the most read blog for a few years in a row, you should retire."

Re: LettyB – I beginning to think we should retire Perez!

Re: LettyB – Wanta see my rod dick?

  10. 10

WHAT…regardless of his loss, he is one of the world's best tennis players. You actually think that you, a fat drugged out asshole, has a shred of a clue what kind of talent this guy has? You don't and will never know what it is like to be considered and reverred as on of the best…NEVER, just as you will never have the right to tell one of the best athletes when their time is up….go suck a dick….

  11. 11

Yeah there's been talk around the office about puttin' harry out to stud.

Re: Spindoc – That's actually a good idea. Perez is always claiming it's time for people who are millions time more talented than he is to "retire". Practice what you preach, Perezzy-poo, and retire.

  19. 19

Federer is his Kryptonite! No chance in his lifetime.

  20. 20

i think id be happy to get to the semis
osing to federer doesnt exactly mean your'e crap

  21. 21

that is the most ridiculous comment. he did awesome to get to the semis. i think you need to refrain from commenting on sports. you sound like an idiot.

  22. 22

Roddick may have lost in straight sets to Federer, but he played FANTASTIC in the tournament! Federer is just his weakness. Many props to Andy for great play!

  23. 23

well…i mean, he's still in the top ten. And the Australian Open hasn't been his best tournament. Nor is the French Open…hopefully once summer comes around he can hit his stride and do well at Wimbledon, and then on the hard courts before the US Open. It's still good to get to a semi-final. I mean the field these past years are so tough.

  24. 24

    Nobody beats Federer.

  25. 25

Re: .perezhilton.com – What would you do with all your spare time if Perez retired?

  26. 26

you're an idiot. he's one of the top 10 best tennis players in the world and competes at the highest level. you wouldn't tell one of the top 10 highest paid actors or actresses, or top 10 best doctors or teachers, to retire because they aren't number 1.

  27. 27

People, he lost to Federer. Not to some unknown. Everyone loses to Federer.
Plus, I love Andy in his cute white shorts!

  28. 28

stfu perez, I don't even really like Andy (I'm all about Rafa) but he did really well in this tournament. He got beat by a tennis god, he has nothing to be ashamed of.

  29. 29

    Re: LettyB – #2.

  30. 30

If loosing in the semis is a reason to retire then there would only be two people at each match. Think before you write you Perez. I love your idea that if you do not win it all you should just go away. No wonder the country is so FUCKED.

  31. 31

Get off his ass, Mario. Not many people in this world can beat Federer, except Nadal. Granted, Roddick did get lucky this tournament because the best players couldn't play well in the heat.

  32. 32

Re: LettyB – agree with you 1000% -it's great perez, besides being a nutrition expert on whether people on over or underweight and an expert in psychology who must out people whether they are gay or not, you are now an expert on when people are too old to continue in their chosen career. Perez, you are like a God, we should bask in your glory. next, you will take over for dr. kvorkian, telling people they have nothing to live for and to just end it.

  33. 33

No, he shouldn't retire. He is still one of the best….

  34. 34

Roddick sucks now. I'm not surprised he lost.

  35. Yokel says – reply to this

if everyone who lost to federer retired the tour would consist of federer and nadal.

roddick is still one of the best players in the world.

it's embarrassing every time you talk about sports

  36. 36

Perez, you shouldn't comment on subjects that are outside of celebrity gossip. Obviously you know little about tennis. Andy Roddick is still in ranked within the Top 10 in the world… and one of the few tennis players that's ever remained there for so long.

  37. 37

Perez, if everyone who lost to Federer quit, there would be no professional tennis tour.

  38. 38

Hardly an ass-whoopin perez. It was a great match between 2 of the best at what they do. You are one of the best at what you do, which is why i'm on your site. Try learning about tennis before you critique it.

  39. 39

but federer is a fucking machine. there's no stopping that sob!

  40. 40

i would gladly serve andi roddick some nice balls, especially if roger federer is around

  41. 41

  42. 42

I agree with a lot of what other people have said. Roddick has been one of the top ten players on the men's tour for several years now. Even if he doesn't win a grand slam, there is plenty of prize money to be won if you make it as far as the semis (not to mention that it's a great achievement to make it that far). There are also a bunch of other tournaments besides the Grand Slams that offer plenty of money and Roddick typically wins at least one per year. He probably makes at least $1 million per year (more money than most of us will ever see in a lifetime) and he's only 26, so why on earth would he stop playing?

Besides that, Roger Federer is simply sublime. Nadal is the only player on tour who can beat him on a consistent basis, and that is mostly on clay (I consider last year's hard court victories to be an aberration since Federer was suffering from mono).

Finally, I would like to point out that Andre Agassi was washed up for a while and then enjoyed a period of resurgence in his early thirties, managing to win a few more grand slams to add to his total. Andy's career is by no means over and even if he doesn't manage to win another Grand Slam, he can still stay at or near the top of the field for at least another several years to come and milk some money out of tournaments and endorsement deals.

  43. 43

My God you are hideously stupid! He lost to Roger Federer, the guy considered to be the greatest player of all time. Roddick still has the best serve in the world and he's playing better than he has in a long time. He has been in the top 10 for 5 years, and is a former number 1 player. Honestly, I sometimes don't like his attitude and the way he talks to officials, but to say he should retire is just stupid. You should stick to gossiping about movie stars. It must be a slow news day when you're bashing top athletes.

  44. 44

How dare you tell Andy to retire? Andy isn't a great player but he can still get to semi finals and finals. Leave him alone. He's only 26. Besides, he lost to Roger Federer and Federer was such as a-hole during that match. I will be happy when Nadal spanks his ass in the final.

  45. 45

LG SEZ, Roddick is 6'2' not 6'6'.

  46. 46

are you kidding me? he made it to the freaking semi-finals of a grand slam and lost to the #2 player and hes one of the top ten players in the world! just because he lost in the semis does not mean he should retire! if every tennis player quit because they didn't make it to the final then we would only have 2 freaking tennis players! hes in good physical condition and hes only 26! he may have lost in straight sets but he did put up a good fight and it was a good match. did u even watch it or any of his other matches at the australian open? i usually agree with you but u seriously have no idea what your talking about.

  47. 47

he may have lost to federe, but hes been playing some of his best tennis in a really long time. He was on fire this Australian Open, easily getting through to the quarterfinals. Im not even a Roddick fan and I was impressed. But i mean, give the man a break! itS FEDERER for christsake. whom i hate with a passion and needs to just disappear. but yeah, very few people have what it takes to beat Federer. that being said Vamos Rafa!!!

  48. 48

Why would he retire! You say some stupid stuff on this site. Andy is health and having fun, while making millions and being famous. He has never been a great player in terms of being a legend, not even close. But he is the best American player since Andre and Pete retired. Your site is so weak,

  49. 49

What a stupid thing to say, do you realise the amount of money he will earn by getting to the semifinals??

  50. 50

Re: sleezy*e – I think you'll find that Nadal beats Federer quite often.

  51. 51

    Re: shannonneal420 – your dumb

  52. 52

NO WAY! just because you don't win first doesn't mean you're not good. roddick's been playing a lot better and it showed in this year's australian open. he made it to the semi-finals and lost against federer. that's definitely reasonable considering that federer is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. you do not know anything about tennis so shutttt upppppp.

  53. 53

Lol this coming from a kid that was NEVER good in sports…

  54. 54

Re: Regina75 – nadal beats rogerer often? nice!

  55. 55

WTF do you know about tennis or any sport for that matter? Professional athletes have career slumps and then come back all the time - idiot.

  56. 56

You clearly know nothing about tennis. Dont post stupid entries like this if you have NO idea what you are talking about.

Andy is a top 10 player, has been for years so there is no reason for him to retire. He finally reached the semis for the first time in a couple of grand slams so he is obviously improving. He beat Djokovic in the process, who is number 3 in the world. If he was about 30 and dropped off the top 50 list, then yes I would agree with you. But he's not.

Not only that, but Roger is one of the greatest (soon, imo, to become the greatest) players of all time. Almost everyone who plays against him cannot beat him. He was number one for over 4 years with 13 grand slams for a reason. Another top 10 player, Del Potro, played against him in the match before and lost 6-2 6-0 6-0. Should he retire? Clearly not.

  57. 57

    Re: Wino21 – #46.

  58. 58

Andy was not trashed by Federer. Andy put up a good fight, and the scores show it all. Don't be dissing my favorite tennis player! He is still an excellent player. Maybe you need to RETIRE. Your column suck by the minute.

  59. 59

A poor diet has been harmful to Andy'S performances. He always maintained that pizza was his favorite food. Athletes have to give up junk food and also not party too much. Andy has great potential if only he could be less rebellious, just ask Jimmy Connors. Stop partying and give up pizza for real food. Good luck, I love you Andy and wish you the best.

  60. 60

It's not his fault, Roger Federer is just too damn good. And Andy is a whiny douchebag.

  61. 61

of course he got crushed, he played federer!

  62. 62

I hope that he retires. He's such an arrogant prick. He makes Amreicans look like arrogant assholes so it would be better for Americans if he retired…despite him being one of America's top players. Last night, he kept arguing with the umpire. He looked like such a fool because everyone knew that he need not bother as he had no chance with Roger anyway! Retire, retire, retire!

  63. 63

Did your fat lazy gay ass even watch a single game in the Australian?

  64. 64

Andy has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open 4 times in his career, not many people out there can say that. He is obviously getting serious about improving his game. Losing in 3 sets to Roger Federer is nothing to be ashamed of. The last 2 sets were only decided by the difference of a few points. Encouraging him to retire is absolutely ridiculous, please tell me what other American male you are going to cheer on? James Blake is an even bigger choke artist.

  65. 65

  66. 66

You're an idiot! If every man who didn't win a final quit, there would only be like six guys playing tennis. Andy is still making millions doing what he does… and he is still the top American player out there.

  67. 67

perez…what the fuck are you talking about. andy's number 7 in the WORLD. why the FUCK would he retire?

  68. D. says – reply to this

YES, get off the court… a flopping fish on a deck is more elegant than the game he plays!

  69. 69

It was sad watching that match last night. But Roger is just perfection…

  70. 70

I'd eat anything he drops out of his body.

  71. D. says – reply to this

    Re: krissyofcourse

    too right!

  72. 72

Last night I dreamt Andy was scrubbing his dirty ass-crack across my face and spitting into his hand and feeding it to me. I'm a mess this morning.

  73. 73

Andy is a good player. His only problem is Roger Federer. No one can beat him( except Rafa). Andy is probably the best US male player at the moment.

  74. 74

Wow… Really? Andy has consistently been in the top 10 in the world for years now! The only problem are the two guys at the top… He had an amazing tournament.
