The Republican National Committee Elects First African American Chair

Obama effect?

On Friday, the Republican National Committee appointed Michael Steele, a former Maryland lieutenant governor, as its chairman.

He is the first African American to hold this post.

Interesting choice.

If the party was not in peril of being totally irrelevant or if there was no Obama, would Mr. Steele's selection have happened?

Re: cali gurl – I am actually an african american female but thanks for the interest.

And I wasn't trying to be angry.. just state a point

    Re: sushi

I am just not buying into the republican's gimmick. They don't want to change anything they just want to use Steele to provide the *illusion* of change to anyone who is dumb enough to believe it.

Steele is just the puppet masters mouthpiece. If you don't believe me talk to the core republican base thats located down here in Atlanta GA or any other republican state.

The rednecks, and hillbillies of the GOP party are not having that.

  2. 102

The Republicans need to realize that they lost because of their ideas, or lack of ideas, and not because of who leads their party. This is a gimmick.

I think he's a good choice and not a "token" leader. Congrats to him!

  4. 104

I can see why the timing may seem "convenient", however, some of you need to do some research. Michael Steele has been the most respected MD republican for years. He would have been selected regardless of the outcome of the presidential election. Many of us in MD thought Steele should have been governer and Ehrlich should have been the lt. gov.- and that was BEFORE Oprah introduced us all to Obama.

  5. 105

I used to love this site, found it a lot of fun. Anymore, all I hear is Perez spouting out political bullshit and kissing celebrity. Give me a break, you are about to lose a reader and I am sure I am not the only one.

  6. 106

When in the fuck are you liberals going to stop making things about race? And you say Republicans are racist. How about, he's the best person for the position? I've been hoping he'd be a rising star in the Republican party for years. Him and Bobby Jindal — and that's not about race either!!

  7. 107

Re: JennaMeow – "he's the best person for the position" That's what George H. W. Bush said about Clarence Thomas, the most worthless Supreme Court justice in memory. So don't lecture "libs" on using race — or lying, darling. You fascists are so full of shit.

  8. 108

Hey fuckers….if you have ever heard this man speak you would know that he is the real deal. Unlike Obama, he has a career in politics and is not just a puppet! If anyone should have been the first black president it should of been him! Now we have to sit and watch Obama and the rest of the money spending dems run this country into the ground!

  9. 109

sometimes good things come out of bad reasons- they seem to select a female vp palin when they thought they'd lose the vote to a hilary pick and now this cause of the obama effect- oh well at least minds are opening!

Re: Romagirl – "My goodness….are we nazis or fascists??" Conservatives' lack of knowledge about history is as pathetic as it is astounding. If you knew anything about the 20th Century, you would know that the Nazis *were* fascists. Now you do. You're welcome, doll.

  13. 113

Re: Plinkie9 – The liberal douchebags are the one's who voted for Obama…. so clearly we do not only look at color and no we have not forgotten about Rice and Powell and Powell publicly endorsed Obama… so I am not quite sure where the hell you were trying to go with that comment… it truly made no sense.

  14. 114

    Obama's hotter…

    Re: Harligh Quinn

I think you have some underlying issue with this man. Is he not black enough for you? Honestly, The way you black folks turn on each ohter is amazing. It's like the frikkin gangs. You all just kill off your own. You said some really mean things that I hope your sorry for.

And I really don't think you have the insight or connections to the "base" of the republican party in GA let alone in every other state in the country.

How do you explain a white republican mom from california donating money to see this guys political career move forward? I'm his base just a republican mom from Cali who digs this guy. I didin't give money to him because he's black. I gave money because I align with him politically. If Bobby Jindal moves into the higher ranks of the republican party he's gettin my money.

I like both of these men because they are young and fresh. Not because one is black and the other is Indian.

Oh and Sara Palin, not a big fan. So I just don't go with the party line…

  16. 116

Re: cali gurl – Actually I know a lot more about him then you think considering he was my lietunant governor for 4 years. Imagine that… a liberal that knows something about a conservative!!!! I dont give a shit what fucking color he is just like I didn't give a shit what fucking color Obama was… HENCE WHY I VOTED FOR HIM IN PRIMARIES AND GENERAL!!!! I don't understand how all of you conservastives can call the liberals racists when we are the ones who elected the first black president!!! Hmmm… makes you wonder!

  17. 117

    mmm K next

Re: JennaMeow – Couldn't agree more. For the party that claims to be an open tent, they sure are close minded. I really enjoy watching the racists come out of the woodwork when a black person is a Republican. I have never witnessed such hatred. It's amazing that apparently black people are all supposed to vote the same way or else they are ostracized by the people that claim to care about them.

  21. 121

Going forward the Republicans are figuring out that they're going to need more than just white people to vote for them.

  22. 122

This is no Obama effect. Michael Steele is brilliant unlike the idoit in the White House. Congrats to him!

  23. 123

Brown or black, cafe ole he sounds more sober than palin. He seems to be inspired by Obama's "I need you to work together" or something like that. Obama is not President because he is black. He is brilliant, honest, empathetic, a visionary and he is also white, let's not forget his mother and her legacy.

  24. Toby says – reply to this

So let me get this straight….Michael Steele was elected because he's black but Obama was elected because of all that experience he has and NOT because HE'S black, right? I can't stop laughing about that one!!!

  25. 125

I'm so glad the RNC voted for Mr. Steele and not that guy who had to quit his all white country club in order to run for the RNC chair. It was starting to look like the Jerry Springer show there for a while.

  26. 126

    Re: smarv001

People on this posting insinuate that the only reason why he got elected is because he's black. To me that is racist because your overlooking his qualifications and not looking at him as a person. That's my biggest objection here. I think there are many people here commeting on this guy without knowing him or what he's about. They took the question looked at the picture and made a judgement and just decided that he was elected because he was black. I think people can make racist comments and not realize it. I have not followed all of your comments so I don't know if your one of them.

News flash. I also elected the first black president. Careful, don't be too quick to judge. Not a fan of Palin.

And why not try articulate your point without swearing

    Just sayin…

Unlike you, we do research into something we call "reality," which is *why* we oppose you. If you conservatives were more familiar with the thing called "reality," you would either blow your brains out with the guns you love so much or become progressive (a/k/a "libs"). In any event, one question mark suffices, dear.

Re: Toby – LOL Toby, that's exactly right. Obama gives one speech at DNC four years ago and the day after people were already shouting Obama for 2008. Was it just because he gave a rousing speech? Or was it because hey, here's an intelligent, clean, black man, that's story book man! (Biden's words). Michael Steele has been around and paid his fucking dues while being ostracized from the black community and fucking liberals who are so goddamned racist against any minority that doesn't play in their party.

  32. 132

Re: JuneGordon – umm suffered through the past eight years…i'm pretty sure THE PEOPLE elected him because he was the best man for the job at the time…you may not like him but he dealt with the situations that were in front of him the best he could and did what he thought was best for this country…if you watched the news you would know that though his ratings were low everybody that worked for him had nothing but excellent things to say about him!

  34. 134

Re: JuneGordon – i'm sorry but i'm pretty sure that it was BIDEN that thought we had TV during the great depression and didn't even know who that Roosevelt was the president then…and republicans are the ones that don't know anything about history…if you want to believe that go ahead

  35. 135

    Re: JuneGordon

Ah June, what point are your trying to debate? Get on topic here. We're talking about Michael Steele remember. I'm not sure where guns blowing your brains out come into play.

Progressive…..is that a code word for giving up christian values?

  36. 136

    Re: baristamommy
Why? To prove there are more black democrats then black republicans? It's a well know statistic that black folks vote democrat.

    And your point is?

  37. 137

Re: baristamommy – how about you all listen to the howard stern experiment where people said they were voting for obama even though the issues and stand points presented to them were mccains….if you need a reason to believe that the country voted on race this is it…no doubt obama is intelligent he just doesn't have experience and was elected because he was the first "black" man to get his name as a major party nominee in a presidential election

  38. 138

    Re: JustPlainFabulous

Brilliant. I'd never thought I'd say that about Howard Stern. That's hilarious.

  41. 141

the point is, that for the republican party, race matters.

  42. 142

I know Michael Steele personally..he is NOT a token choice but truly deserving of his post. He would have won no matter his ethnicity or the president's.

  43. 143

this uncle tom guy its a tool for the repugs to attack obama and say see were not racist. The party of crazy Regan that destroyed the african american family with the war on drugs and introducing crack to the slums yea okay. This guy is just going to be the same as sarah palin but its going to backfire big time , black people are going to feel so patronized its not going to be pretty. Just wait until monday when the mainstream media gets a hold of this. I can't wait to see what the New York Times and the Washington Post has to say about this.

  44. 144

  46. 146

Re: JustPlainFabulous – so you think we put our now delicate country in the hands of someone based on affirmative action? grow up.

  47. 147

This is soo wrong on so many levels i mean i can get where they are coming but this is not going to pay well for the republican base which we all saw on the great you tube videos ie the guy with the monkey names barrack hmm.. This guy will probably quit or leave, the republican party is a white only party they just use black people and hispanics to make a front all their policies are against the right of women, hello KATRINA anyone where all the black people were not allowed to go into the white neighborhoods and were stuck for days while maccain and bush cut a cake yea okay. This guy is just a tool being used by the republicans but it wount work the funny thing is that african americans are the base of the democratic party, its like the DNC making rick warren their head its not going to make the crazy evangelicals vote democratic. This just makes the republicans seem really really desperate

  48. 148

Re: EveryWoman – what are the repubs gonna say, we only picked him because he's black? of course they're keeping their mouths shut.

  49. 149

Re: baristamommy – so are you saying that he was nominated to get black votes not because he is qualified? The point was made that most blacks vote dem. From this I can only assume that's what you mean because you won't come out and say it. Have a little back bone and just state your point.

Do you think Bush appointed Dr. Rice because she was black too? So everytime a republican appoints or votes a black folk into office or a higher ranking position it's only because they're black and not because they are qualified?

Say it if that's what you mean own it.

Chairman Steele is a very smart, very accomplished guy who has been around for a long time and has been earning this for a long time. Good for him, good for the party. He gives every indication of wanting Republicans to act like Republicans. Maybe now they can regain the Congress in 2 years. Don't get me wrong; Republicans mostly suck. It's just that they mostly suck less than the Democrats.

  55. 155

Re: cali gurl – they are just using him, not to get black votes only but to attack obama bc who is better to attack obama than another black person. These people are really evil. But anyways this will backfire big time, the only way for the republicans to be really relevant would be to drop the crazy evangelicans but that is never going to happen if they do that they loose half of their base. The other part of the base must be foaming at the mouth the rednecks and KKK are proly looking to form a third party.

you're ignorant. its sad that people cannot except african americans who are educated. there is no such thing as acting white. he's a role model for the black community if anything and people like you who use terms such as "oreo" who keep this world from progressing. people like you are the reason there is so much intolerance in the world.

  58. jefdo says – reply to this

I wouldn't make this a race issue or say it's all due to Obama, Michael Steele has been a respected member of the Republican party for years now.

  59. 159

I think you are asking a legitimate question. One one hand, Steele is a very good speaker and would represent the party well in the public arena. He is also not from the south, unlike his nearest oppenent, Katon Dawson. The GOP is worried about the south being perceived as a southern regional party. Dawson is very well-liked in the party and is a proven leader in strategy and logistics, so from a practical sense, he might have been the better choice. And, voters don't elect Presidents and Members of Congress based on who leads the party. On the other hand, the timing does smack of the party wanting to prove it is inclusive. And, Steele seems to represent that.

  60. 160

Re: ashuuuhlee – hahah your funny black people look up to obama not to some rich black kid who thinks he is white i bet his wife is white. You know all you republicans have to fit in with the MASTER WHITE RACE.

  61. 161

    Re: mark18usa

Well we have a few theories going on here:

    1. To black vote

    2. To attack Obama

I happen to believe as many of the republicans here have also stated, that he is more than qualified and that's why he go the nomination. It's funny that you cannot believe that he is simply qualified and that's it. We posting here represent the republican party.

You also mentioned Katrina in your long winded post……Isn't Biobby Jindal doing a outstanding job with the great state of Louisana?

  62. 162

Re: ashuuuhlee – Barrack obama is educated and does not act white he acts like a normal educated black person. he does not tries to be white like mr. steele, barrack obama married a black woman went to a black church. steele dude is a kisser of white people and its sick. The way he talks its like a white person ' that's awsome" yea i know soo many black people that speak like 12 year old skater boi from cali,

Re: VivaLaJen – don't forget Karl Malone and Lynn Swann

  69. 169

i think that people are so stupid. and harrybalsac, you are an idiot. maybe classy white people are so racist because the majority of black people in the US are lazy assholes who want to live on the money that hardworking americans make. obama wants to socialize medicine? that will be nice when americans who have worked hard all their lives to be able to afford a quality way of living have to pay for no good lazy sob's to go see a doctor.

  70. 170

    Re: mark18usa

obviously you're missing the point. it doesn't matter if a person chooses to marry a white, black or purple person. skin color does not make you who you are, your actions and your words do.

also, you spelled our president's name wrong AND you used "boi" which is not a real world

  71. 171

AND for people to say that obama was not elected because of race is complete bullshit…did anyone hear the howard stern interview in harlem asking who they were voting for? if not, look it up and that will give an answer.

  72. 172

Re: ashuuuhlee – missing the point of what? that this guy wants to be white so bad that he is in sync with a party that is against the things that got him to where he is ie affirmative action, money for inner city schools, money for poor college students and healthcare for the poor, welfare and the list goes on. This Steele is like a chicken voting for colonel Sanders.

  73. 173

    Great choice.

  74. 174

That party so damn phony and backwards it's ridiculous! Wonder if they'll call him a "monkey or magic negro" like they did Obama. The imbecile Sarah Palin didn't go over well and neither will this idiot! The republicans are the laughing stock of the world! bwaaahaaaaaaa!

  75. 175

    Re: mark18usa

bullshit bullshit bullshit. you're making so many assumptions about this man, as well as insulting the black community by claiming they need affirmative action and free money for college to get anywhere in life. some people just work their ass of to get where they are.

  76. 176

Well, considering the GOP has no comprehension whatsoever of the concept of HUMANITY, it's no surprise that they believe Obama's win is all about race.

Can't wait until everyone wakes up and see the MUCH larger picture in front of us all.

  77. 177

Well I for one will go to sleep a much happier person now that Michael Steele is chariman of the GOP….. So Peace out. It's been a lively discussion. I am a little disenchanted by all the use of foul language and particularily offended by the Uncle Tom references. To each his own. But give some thought to articulating your points with less offensive language. You lose credibility and it shows a lack of creativity.

I will leave you with this: Obama is my president and I will respect him. I will never refer to him in a derogatory manner. I will never assume his intentions are to do the country harm just because I do not align with his political beliefs. I am a nationalist and I respect my country and those who serve it. I will always try to see the good in people and look at things objectivly. I hope that people treat president Obama with more respect than they treated President Bush. Any man or woman who takes on the pressure of being president of the united states deserves nothing less.

  78. 178

If Democrats are so much more "enlightened" explain to me why John Kennedy was a World War II veteran…he volunteered, and Kennedy was more of a protectionist and far more hawkish than any Democrat in the past 40 years.

Unlike the Democrat party and its waivering and waffling on core issues.

    Re: PUAinNYC

I 1000% agree. I'm sure Mr. Steele has the credentials but the Republicans are definitely not against shady biz to correct what's wrong with their party right now. They're basically pulling another Palin stunt to turn things around for them but I doubt it will help. The damage is done and we have 4 very good years to look forward to with Obama!

  80. Unari says – reply to this

No, he would have never gotten past the silver trays. He is a token, nothing more. A way for the RNC to try and bring in more african americans into it's ranks. The white people on the conservative side will yell this to the mountaintops about how monumental this is and do the "See, we aren't racist and such" routine. Black people, on the other hand, will all be saying "Get the fuck out of here with this fool, we know what he is and why he's there. You can't fool us that easily. They are using the old adage and trying to create "history" themselves. The worst enemy of a black man, is another black man. Steele is an uncle tom, nothing more.

  81. 181

I am sure that Strom Thurmon has turned over in his grave a few times over this. Republitards only use blacks as evidenced by the relationship and child Strom had with a black woman and he was FOR racial segregation. F*cking hypocrits!

Just like the Whig party…the Republitards are fast becoming obsolete! Thank God!

  82. 182

As a Washington, DC GOP WASP, I'm the last person you'd expect to like Steele (stereotypically speaking). However, I've loved him for over a year now. He's fresh and relatable and if you knew anything about the GOP world at all, you'd know he's highly supported and liked. The Young Republicans of America overwhelming chose him in a pre-election poll and survey as well.

  83. 183

As for Vengeance's comments… Yeah, as far as the last 8 years, the GOP has stood for rejecting health care for children, dumping the American people in a recession, getting us in a war that shouldn't have happened, torture, and warrant-less wiretapping. Great values!

Democrats have nothing against the opinions of military people… And I don't think they have anything against the military in general, whether they personally served or not.

  85. 185

For the first time we have finally broken the barriers of skin color. We have finally gotten our brains hard wired that if your qualified, the color of skin is not suppose to make a difference. I'm as white as you can be, and I wouldn't of hired George Bush to scoop dog poop off my lawn 15 yrs ago. I voted for Obama and know I made the best choice. He has a very broken gov't to try to fix thanks to poop scooper. Lets back our president and try to be repectfull human beings again. I know freedom of speech is a good thing, but it's not teaching our children anything except that they think they can be little assholes and get away with it. I want world peace, for real…i want made in the USofA to be stamped on all products we buy. thats all i have to say

  86. 186

NOPE! how predictable and transparent of you gop, but guess what between you cancelling memberships at your white only clubs, putting out racist jingles, shutting down a stimulus package for a flailing economy for not supporting your big business partners through more tax cuts on top of the bailout they've already rcvd people still know your all wearing suits instead of sheets.

House GOP’s Stimulus Plan Would Actually Raise Taxes For Many Americans

GOP leaders — led by John Boehner and Eric Cantor — have spent days bashing the economic stimulus package being touted by President Obama and Democrats because it doesn’t sufficiently cut taxes.

But the alternative plan House Republicans unveiled as a more responsible approach earlier this week would have actually raised taxes for untold numbers of Americans.

    Read the whole story here:

  92. 192

Yes, it would have. Michael Steele is a wonderful man; white or black. He has been a widely respected member of the Republican party for years and totally deserves this position. I think everyone should stop judging an individual's importance and capability based on their race. It's so degrading. A black, white, Indian, Chinese, Latino, etc.. man OR woman could have this position if they were qualified. It's not about your ethnicity. More power to Michael Steele. PS. you do not have to be white and EVIL to be a Republican, much to popular disbelief. Not every Republican is against gay rights or against people who are not like them. Kthanks.

  93. 193

I live in Annapolis, MD for those of you who challenged that would be the capital of the used to be Great State of Maryland. Mr. Steele ran for a Senate seat a couple years back and lost because he is a Republican in a stupid liberal, I mean Democritic lets give everything away, state. When Mr. Steele was Leuitenant Governor under Robert Erhlich (R) this state was in great shape. Unfortunately, we now have Martin O'Malley (D) who was elected after his stint as Mayor of heroin heights, I mean Baltimore, and he fucked that place up too. Maryland is now in the shitter b/c of these fucking liberals. Mr. Steele should be Gov. of MD. But I am glad he is the head of RNC. Now in 4 years when the liberal shit stimulus structure plan (say that 10 times real fast) fails we will put someone in office to fix it permanently!

Re: JuneGordon – So because 9/11 happened that means it was Rice's fault? You are so stupid you don't even deserve to breath. It's clear that you have no education beyond 2nd grade. Absolutely pathetic. BTW, it's not a good thing to lump all reps together. Because guess what, I am not a christian and *gasp* I am opposed to the NRA. OMG allert the media, republicans are actually not stereotypical sheep like the liberals are. We had to suffer through 8 years of Clinton and now will have to suffer while his moronic presidential choices are felt through this country. Housing crisis is a direct link to Clinton. but you would only know that if you were educated. Sorry, it must be above you.

Re: smarv001 – It makes perfect sense you dim wit. Liberals only look at color. They promote Obama as a black man. not a a man. But a black man. Republicans promote Powell as a man, not a black man. See the difference or are the words I used too big for your vocabulary?? At least the republicans don't make a joke out of the inaugeration like the dems do. In this economy (that Clinton and Wall Street created) they throw lavish parties and blow millions of dollars. Talk about a slap in the face to struggling Americans.

To answer Perez's question I do feel this is part of the "Obama Effect" however its sad that I believe that because being from Maryland and being a registered Independent, a lot of reasons sadly, are based on his race.
Mr. Steele is a EXCELLENT politician in my opinion and I feel he lost the campaign for Maryland Senate seat mostly because he is a Republican and the stigma related to Bush. He really wants to change perceptions of the Republican party and is really willing to listen instead of turn a deaf ear and order all the time. For once, I'm happy for Republicans cause I believe if anyone could handle the task given to him, Steele can tackle it.

    So, once America goes black…….

  97. 197

Yeah this guy is about as black as Clarence Thomas. He has no connection to the needs of African Americans, he's just another crazy bougie black guy who became Republican to be accepted by rich white people. It's a psychosis and sad really.

Plus the racist wing of the Republican party, which is basically the entire party, will LOVE this appointment. These people are so fucking fake and hypocritical it's pathetic. They're soo lost.

MIchael Steele has been considered as the new RNC chair for a long time. This has absolutely nothing to do with the new administration - please look up this man's credentials and don't diminish his accomplishments by somehow linking him to some "Obama-effect." I am thrilled to see him in this position.

  99. 199

    Awesome my ass. :/

This is all about trying to appeal to folks and save face. So if we see one Black person on the RNC, I guess that's suppose to suddenly appeal to the nation (Black people as the obvious target) and then get that Repub. vote again. No no no no. That's what zombie followers do and it's fucked up to play on that. Sadly I'm sure some people WILL fall for this shit. But seeing as some of the basic views of Republicans go against what I personally stand for, there ain't a chance in hell putting a black man as the chairman is going to do a damn thing.

=D But you get a 100 cookie calorie for trying! THX!

  100. 200

bwaa haaa haaa. republicans are pathetic. and dumbasses will fall for this. black is the new black.
