The Republican National Committee Elects First African American Chair

Obama effect?

On Friday, the Republican National Committee appointed Michael Steele, a former Maryland lieutenant governor, as its chairman.

He is the first African American to hold this post.

Interesting choice.

If the party was not in peril of being totally irrelevant or if there was no Obama, would Mr. Steele's selection have happened?

Thoughts?

republican is a party of racist white people

  2. 202

Why are you lefties so obsessed with race? Steel is a very smart and capable man. Perfect for the job. He just happens to be black. I think the left still thinks that the right is racist. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why.

  3. 203

Oh wait, I just figured it out. You feel superior and more evolved (elitist) if you believe that Republicans are racist. That way it makes you a member of the COOL party. Sorry, no one's buying it anymore. Just wait for Bobby Jindal to make his grand entrance in a year or so. Then what?

  4. 204

Re: vengance – " Just remember to thank Republicans for your freedoms and abilities to run your mouth.
More than 75% of the United States Military are Republicans." This whole "thank our troops for your freedom of speech" bumper-sticker nonsense really annoys me. The last time any American troop did anything to protect our rights of Free Speech was in World War II. Everything since then has been nothing but worthless boondoggles that didn't protect shit. Viet Nam anyone? The US Military is nothing more than our country's biggest form of welfare, giving jobs to rednecks who are otherwise unemployable. If they want to die for nothing, that is their choice, but they get no thanks for my freedoms. Not until they actually defend them instead of "make war" with irrelevant people without the power to take away those freedoms. I know we are not supposed to voice that truth, but too bad.

  5. 205

would obama be pres if he wasn't black??? it worked for the dems…

    Re: cali gurl

I don't know what you mean when you ask if he is dark enough for me.. that sounds like some cracker base racist shit to me. I have *no* problem

My dissagreement with his placement has everything to do with the fact that its clearly a political distraction.

You think this guy would have had a chance in hell at being chair if it wasn't For Barack? If Hillary had won you best believe the new chair would have been Palin…

Honestly i would have much rather prefer Rush be chair because at least this guy wears his ignorance on his sleeve, and doesn't use some "token" black guy to pon it off.

  9. 209

Your right. It's like when people put down others to make themselves feel good.

Remember when Bill Clinton named himself the first black president? After his term he established is office right in the middle of Harlem. Where was the outrage??? Did the democrats think that it was impossible to have a real black man as president? So they let a middle aged white man steal the show. People were too brainwashed to see the insult.

This is the same party who loads up social programs like welfare, birth control and abortions to keep lower income people dependent upon the government. They think the democrats are taking such good care of them. But what they don't see is the big thumb of government pushing their mushy little back into the little boxes of undera cheivement where they think they belong. Once again they don't believe people can raise themselve up to be something greater. Like they never thought there would be a real first black president.

Re: Bobby Jindal- Of course the democrats will think that is is some conspiracy to get voters if Jindal ever (and i pray that he does) gets into higher office. They will over look the fact that he drug the state of Louisana out of the nations biggest national disaster that this nation has ever seen.

The republican party is not on the verge of being totally irrelevant. The opposite is going to happen….when the liberals screw up this country the republicans will be stronger than ever!!!!!!
Mr. Steele is very qualified and that is why he got the job.

  12. 212

Michael Steele has actually been an All-Star in the Republican for quite some time. Any person who is politically informed would know this. I have always said he is a future politician to watch in the Republican Party, along with Louisiana's Governor, Bobby Jindal who is Indian. It is not about a person's ethnicity, but rather what policies he or she represents. It is sad that half the poeple who voted for Obama know very little about politics or his political platform, but rather jumped on the Obama Bandwagon because it seemed like the cool thing to do.

  13. 213

    Re: Harligh Quinn

Cracker? Your calling me cracker and racist. That's funny. Your the person who refered to Mr Steele as a "coon" and called him "token". But you call me cracker.

I'm just trying to figure out what your beef is with Mr. Steele so that's why I asked you if he was not black enough for you. It just seems like you really can't stand the guy and I'm trying to figure out why.

WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM WITH HIM? Do you respect him? Do you admire his accomplishments? What do you think of HIM, not the republican party. I am really interested in hearing your thoughts on him. Not once have you said anything positive about the guy. Instead you call him coon and token.

It's ok if you don't like republicans, but don't put down your own race in the process. Do you see that is the perception here? Your putting down your own race and for what? To be angry with some "white men" Don't let the white man use you to do your their dirty work.

Go ahead be angry call republicans what you want but don't use your brother to do it.

And let's not brand all republicans as racist. Remember the republican party was formed because they were opposed to slavery. The republican position on slavery was very unpopular in the south.

And let's not for Get President Obama's hero Abe Lincoln was a republican.

  15. 215

Re: conservative1 – "when the liberals screw up this country"
Don't be so modest, dear. When it comes to screwing up this country, thanks to George W. Bush, you Republicans beat us to it! We could only dream of screwing up American in such a complete and dramatic manner as you conservatives have . . .

  16. 216

    Are reupblicans really racist?

in 1865, the Republican-controlled Congress passed and President Abraham Lincoln (R-IL) signed into law a bill to establish a civilian federal agency within the War Department for assisting emancipated slaves in the post-Civil War South. The first head of the Freedmen's Bureau was General Oliver Howard, who would later co-found Howard University in Washington, DC.

  17. 217

    Are reupblicans really racist?

In 1867, the federal charter for Washington, DC's Howard University was signed into law. The charter was written by Senator Henry Wilson (R-MA), Senator Samuel Pomeroy (R-KS) and Representative Burton Cook (R-IL). Republicans thereby established an institution of higher learning for emancipated slaves and other African-Americans. Today, Howard University has students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Senator Wilson would later be Vice President during the Ulysses Grant administration.

JOHN F. KENNEDY GOT THE U.S. INVOLVED IN VIET NAM JUNE…OR DID YOU FORGET THAT A DEMOCRAT WAS ACTUALLY AGAINST COMMUNISM AT ONE POINT.
SERVICE IN THE MILITARY IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF CITIZENSHIP, LOOK AT HOW MNAY CONGRESSMEN, SENATORS, AND PAST PRESIDENTS ACTUALLY SERVED THEIR COUNTRY.
YOU ALSO SEEM TO FORGET THAT THE G.I. BILL IS THERE FOR VETERANS TO ACTUALLY GO TO COLLEGE.
THE WARS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN ARE BEING FOUGHT FOR THESE COUNTRIES TO ACTUALLY BE FREE OF TYRANNY, THEY ARE HAVING FULL ELECTIONS IN IRAQ THIS WEEKEND…IF SADDAM HUSSEIN WERE STILL IN POWER THAT WOULD NOT BE HAPPENING.
I AM THOROUGHLY SICK OF ALL THE LIBERAL TALKING POINTS…

Re: KEEFER – Yes it was all those conservative christians keying cars, ripping out political signs, regsitering their dogs to vote, voting multiple times, invading churches, knocking down grandma with her cross on live TV - yeah - all that tolerance and love - keep drinking the cool aid!

  24. 224

god perez. the republican party is not becoming irrelevant. do you even understand how bad for the country it would be if there werent more than one party??

  25. 225

Re: vengance – "THE WARS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN ARE BEING FOUGHT FOR THESE COUNTRIES" Well, then let those countries send the troops a box of chocolates and a mylar "Thanks!" baloon. My point still stands: The troops haven't done shit for Americans' freedom since World War II. Instead, "We Love a War But Won't Pay For It!" Republicans have bankrupted America by starting an enormously expensive, completely unecessary war in Iraq while all the while not doing anything to PAY for the damn thing. Instead, they continued their reckless "let's cut taxes on the rich during a war" childishness, leaving the country financially unstable. In other words, Republicans have damanged America in ways that Al Queda could only dream of. And Speaking of parrotting talking points, the fact that Kennedy started a useless war (which Nixon signifcantly escalated) has NOTHING to do with my point that the American military has been engaged in nothing but wastes of men and money since World War II. Go back to sticking metallic "I support our troops!" decals on your car while you support politicians who get those same troops needlessly killed, darling. I don't know how some of you sleep at night. Oh, that's right: BOOZE!

Re: LG sez Drug Test Palin NOW! – 217
June "BUG" Gordon is nothing but a HOT BAG OF GAS. It takes nothing to spout off the wall opinions.

  27. 227

I live in Maryland, and Steele has been a major player long before Obama hit the Senate. Repubs have been behind Steele because of his commitment, not his color. Shame on you PH for suggesting that his color got him to this position. Are you suggesting the same about Obama?

  28. 228

Re: JuneGordon – June - why are you so spun up about it troops getting killed - it's voluntary service - they want to be there - + the fact - you've never served in the military - none of your liberal, castrated, hetrophobic offspring will most likely serve their country (blame, take, and rip apart their country yes, but serve it? No) so unless you've got a dog in the fight - STFU about our free to serve or leave US military

  29. 229

    Re: JuneGordon
Republicans did not bankrupt the country. The mortgage crisis was created by lending people money that they cannot afford to pay back. It was aimed at minorities and low income folks. The whole mortgage debacle can be traced right back to the Democrats and Barney Frank way back in 1993. Now O’bama is just going to throw gasoline on the fire with another trillion bucks.

The high debt was caused by 9/11 and the mortgage crisis. I assume that you think retaliation for the bombings was not justified for killing 3000 people but you’re just an old gas bag.

As for as cutting taxes for the rich, I got a good tax cut and believe me I’m not rich. The tax cut also was responsible for the longest running expansion of the economy.

  30. 230

Re: Melley – Spoken like a true dumbfuck.

  32. 232

This man HATES Obama and was on Real Time With Bill Maher saying how Sarah Palin was going to be the next VP. He would be pissed if he knew people are saying he was elected because of Obama. He also said the "Barack the magic negro" song was nothing and people should get over it.

  33. 233

Both groups are right. Steele was elected for BOTH reasons. A) his qualifications and b) his skin color. They both factored in.

  34. 234

Micheal Steele is awesome! I am from MD and have always cast my vote for this leader! He rocks!

  35. 235

and one more thing…Michael Steele could kick Obama's ass in any debate. This guy is gifted speaker and does not need a teleprompter in front of him! Unlike Obama's —uh, uh, stutter….when he has not had time to prepare a statement! LOVE MICHAEL STEELE!!!

  36. 236

    Re: Melley
Why should you "trust" any politician? There should not be any reason that you don't know exactly what they are up to. They all lie so all the more reason to check up on them.

  37. 237

Michael Steele is exactly that the party needs. His being black has nothing to do with it. He is a great person and qualified for the job!

  38. 238

The only racist people on this board are the ones implying this man was only selected because he's black. Its too hard for them to comprehend that this man was selected based on his credentials or his republican idealogy. That's the problem with a lot of dems, they think all blacks or hispanics are all poor, uneducated idiots. They seem to be of the opinion that a hispanic or black person can only be selected for a position because of affirmative action, yeah right. Its the dems that are holding hispanics and blacks back by perpetuating these negative stereotypes. News flash, not all blacks and hispanics grow up in the "ghetto". Most of us grow up in regular middle class communities and subscribe to conservative principles. And yes, many of us our republicans.

  39. 239

You liberals are so fucking pathetic…Remember Colin Powell, Condolisa Rice? Sorry duchbags, but republicans and no democrats, gave blacks the first chance in big politics….Also don't forget Abraham Lilcon, he was a REPUBLICAN, not a DEMOCRAT.- Check history please!

  44. 244

They did vote for him because he was black. It's very crude thinking on the RNC's part. They want to look like they arent a whites only party (which they are) and they think that they could get there way if Obama had to deal with another black guy. So much stupidity on the RNC's part. They're trying to look progressive like the Libs. When in fact they are still stuck in the 50's.

  45. 245

Republicans are STRUGGLING to stay relevant. Pathetic.

  46. 246

  51. 251

The Left loves to think they have a monopoly on women and other minorities. They get angry when that's proven false. Sarah Palin, Michael Steele, Bobby Jindal, Conde Rice, etc. These people are ripped to shreds because they don't subscribe to the liberal theory of minorities (themselves) as subhuman VICTIMS who need government to help them stay alive.

The difference is… Republicans don't consider race or gender— only qualifications, Dems are downright obsessed with it.

Bill Cosby is so right. Love that man… and I don't care who he voted for or what party he belongs to. He speaks the truth.

  54. 254

Well - hmmm…Colin Powell, Condoleeze Rice - the REPUBLICANS have a better track record of blacks in power than the democrats - effective, intelligent blacks…

Democrats keep minorities down - so they can keep the big government maching running…duh - welfare, social services, etc…these are all government jobs that would be reduced if minorities were self sufficient.

Anyone smell Affirmative action with this latest election???

  55. 255

Re: boiledchimp – "Republicans don't consider race or gender— only qualifications" Meanwhile, in the real world . . . Clarence Thomas had no qualifications, but was chosen SOLELY because he was black and would parrot what Scalia said. And Sarah Palin is a scary, ignorant, lying idiot, chosen SOLELY because she is a woman, in a crass (and ineffectively stupid) ploy to steal women voters from Obama. So stop typing lies.

Dream on, if you think that's just an attitude held mostly by Dems.

  59. 259

    Re: YoungTaurus
Actually, it's the attitude of blacks and Hispanics. Who else wants to keep Affirmative Action. Blacks and Hispanics are 80-90% democrats. The rest of the democrats follow suit. Why don't you think that sports doesn't have Affirmative Action? It would reduce the number of blacks if it ever was implemented.

Plus, Republicans only do that because they saw the Democrats trying to make them look bad buy putting a Black president in first. Republicans Had Keys but that stupid Rude ass speaker didn't want him to get any air time. And The Democrats were going to try and keep him of the ballot anyway. Plus This guy is only the lead it does not mean he will run for presidents learn your cabinets dumbasses. Now who looks dumb DEMO-CATS

    no originality.

  65. 265

Re: YoungTaurus – You're probably right, that attitude is probably shared by politicos on both sides of the aisle but it doesn't make it a fact. As a hispanic female, I have found the refusal of the Republican party to perpetuate the victimization of minorities (in large part) refreshing. The reality is the majority of hispanics are not poor - contrary to what many liberals may think. I myself am a female hispanic with a post graduate degree. I am not a first generation college graduate . Both of my parents have post graduate degrees as well. Everyone in my family has a college education and we are not the exception to the norm in my community. Boiled Chimp said it well when he said the following: "Sarah Palin, Michael Steele, Bobby Jindal, Conde Rice, etc. These people are ripped to shreds because they don't subscribe to the liberal theory of minorities (themselves) as subhuman VICTIMS who need government to help them stay alive."

  66. 266

Re: MrRight – "Democrats trying to make them look bad buy putting a Black president in first." Goodness, we finally meet that child left behind we heard so much about!

  67. 267

If the party was not in peril of being totally irrelevant or if there was no Obama? I think that the Republican National Committee would still appoint Michael Steele as their chairman. Why not? Color does not matter, what matters is Steele's views and his commitment to the party. It is time to put discrimination aside and look and people on their views not the way they look. I think that this should of happened a long time ago.

  68. 268

Hey - if having a Negro on board helped the Dems, it's GOTTA help the Republicans, right?
On the other hand, maybe this marks a change of direction for the Republican Party, perhaps making it relevant again.

  73. 273

Michael Steel was the best person for the job, hands down. He is a true conservative, believes in the conservative way of life, and is a great representative of the Republican party. Just because the libs elect someone solely on the color of their skin, conservatives actually think about it and pick the right person for the job.

  74. 274

    To all the Republicans:

I'm sorry you lost the election and are feeling sore about it. But no one is going to thank you when the Dow slips another 1000 points, when we lose another 100,000 jobs this month, or when our recession becomes… well, you know. A tax cut for you and your friends is not putting any money in the pocket of my family or my State. It's not fixing the interchanges, upgrading the electricity grid, or improving the quality of my children's education.

Get off your rear ends and start DOING something. Right now you look like a bunch of whiny, overgrown schoolchildren. Also, you didn't lose the election because you "weren't conservative enough."

The Democrats promised a new bipartisan approach, but–remarkably–that didn't mean "roll over while the Republicans do whatever they want, notwithstanding the fact that the last two consecutive elections have been a referrendum on the lack of conservative trust and support in this nation, not to mention their inability to effectively manage just about every important foreign and domestic issue."

Either get with it or go away.
