ADHD drugs can cause hallucinations in some kids
Drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can cause children to have hallucinations even when taken as directed, U.S. government researchers said on Monday.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration researchers analyzed data from 49 clinical studies conducted by makers of the drugs and found they can cause psychosis and mania in some patients, including some with no obvious risk factors. In some cases, children hallucinated that worms, bugs or snakes were crawling on them.
"Patients and physicians should be aware of the possibility that psychiatric symptoms consistent with psychosis or mania" might arise in the course of treatment, Dr. Andrew Mosholder and colleagues wrote in the journal Pediatrics.
Their analysis provides fresh detail about known risks of the drugs, which include Novartis AG's Ritalin and Focalin XR, Shire Plc's Adderall XR and Daytrana patch, Johnson & Johnson's Concerta, Eli Lilly and Co's Strattera and Celltech Pharmaceuticals Inc's Metadate CD.
It also includes data on Cephalon Inc's modafinil, sold as Provigil, a narcolepsy drug that was rejected as an ADHD treatment in children.
FDA spokeswoman Sandy Walsh said the data formed the basis for recent warnings about psychiatric side effects that have been added to product labels in recent years.
Millions of children use drugs to treat symptoms of ADHD, which affects about three to seven percent of U.S. children.
ADHD is marked by restlessness, impulsiveness, inattention and distractibility that can interfere with a child's ability to pay attention in school and maintain social relationships.
"The numbers of cases of psychosis or mania in pediatric clinical trials were small," Mosholder and colleagues wrote. "However, we noted a complete absence of such events with placebo treatments."
In one account, they described a 7-year-old girl who took an 18 mg dose of Strattera or atomoxetine who started talking nonstop within hours of taking her first dose.
"Two hours after taking her second dose of atomoxetine, the patient started running very fast, stopped suddenly, and fell to the ground. The patient said she had 'run into a wall' (there was no wall there)," they wrote.
"These adverse side effects are rare," said Dr. Harold Koplewicz of New York University Child Study Center, who was not involved in the study, adding that they are reversible,
"Once you stop the medicine, the side effects go away," he said in a telephone interview.
He said children under age 10 are susceptible to negative drug side effects in the same way that older adults are.
"We know that medications that affect neurochemicals in your brain to increase your attention and make you less impulsive also can have an effect on other neurochemicals in your brain that affect mood," he said.
Both Koplewicz and FDA researchers urged doctors to discuss the potential side effects with parents and children to help ease their anxiety if such symptoms should occur.

The fact that methylphenidate and dextroamphetamines, both stimulants used for ADHD treatment, may have hallucinations as rare side effects has been well-established. Any type of stimulant may have potential to cause hallucination (in a small minority of users), even caffeine. It is still important to take these medications because of the possible developmental impact ADHD may have on the future achievements of the child.

I take one of those drugs for ADHD and I don't get halucinations.. each drugs will have different side affects for different people

My son takes Strattera - he's 12, and he takes less than the 18mg that the 7year old in the article takes. that's a massive amnt for a little kid.

My son has adhd, and we manage it without any drugs just fine. I feel like hes supposed to be that way. We changed his diet and put him on a schedule and its helped tremendously.

Im so glad you posted this!!! Im from holland and my cousins son is on ritalin fot 4 months now, he had hallicunations at night, like one and a half hour long, and they said (dokter) that it couldnt be the medicine and he was probably dreaming . she taped it and ive seen it …it was horrible, a 7 year old crying i dont want this anymore mommy, scared of his mother, and saying he saw numbers and letters, yelling i wanna go to sleep then it stops…and a lot more, now she can take this and show them. cant be coincidence!! thanks!!

Re: HollieSpirit – That does not help everyone!!! Some children have very severely and diet and schedules will not in anyway touch their symptoms. Mental illness comes in all different severities and therefore must be treated differently in everyone. That is absolutely wonderful that your son does not need medication and I am very happy for you that you do not have to endure the pain that comes along with medicating your child, but many people have no choice but to medicate their children. I have bipolar disorder, have been on medication since I was 15. It took my parents a lot longer than it should have to accept something was wrong with me and get me in to see a doctor. Once they did i became a completely different person, and I have been taking medication for many many years now, it is truly my savior, and while it has side effects, they benefits definately outweigh the risks.

Not only am I educated in the field of psychology and work in the field of psychology but I too have a mental illness and to hear someone like you somehow find a way to blame this on teachers really upsets me and proves to me how ignorant our society really is when it comes to the topic of mental illness.

Of course it does because ADHD doesn't exist in the very vast majority of kids diagnoised with it. You give a kid a physciatric drug they don't have a need for they will have an adverse reaction. ADHD and autism is the biggest crock of crap to come out in the last 10 years. It does exist, but it is fairly rare. What those kids who have been diagnoised mostly lack is a disciplined, controlled, mature environment. You have to teach your kids from a very young age if they step out of line there will be consequences. And then also set yourself as an example. The vast majority of problem kids are of parents who are generally unrulelly themselves and obnoxious and can't control themselves long enough to properly bring up their young to behave correctly.

They tried to tell me I might want to take him to a doctor because they felt he was ADHD. I told them that I felt they might need to suck a big old dick because I think they are full of horse shit. For all those that don't believe ADHD exists, I'll lend you my (unmedicated) 13-yr-old for a few days. Then you can give him his meds and see the difference. Maybe then you'll understand that it is real. Would you deny a diabetic insulin? or an asthmatic albuterol? Why, then, is this different? As for side effects, every medicine has them. You need to work with your Dr to find the right medicine and the right dose.
And why use Suri's photo? Because a lot of the anti-ADHD, anti-mental illness reports are funded by scientology.

my not 16 yr old was on meds from Kindergarden till 7th grade she keep be comming immune to the meds so i quit giving em tooher she listents better off then onn meds
As for the teachers its there job to say if your childs havin difficulty in school its the parent that decides if they want too Medicate i tryed all diff kinds for my oldest my youngest is as well ADHD but i dont medicate id rather have him get extra help in school then to drug him Its all Up to the parent on whether they want to drug there children and risk side effects and possible drug addiction in the future
Re: smarv001 – do you work with children? the reason I am asking is that I do have 2 children with ADD, one is medicated and as soon as he has an off day, 2 of his teachers call me and tell me that his doctor needs to up his meds. the dr thinks these 2 teachers are nuts. I was wondering if you see this in parents-I see alot of parents getting extremely worried when their childrenrun around after being in school all day and will not sit still and immediately think their kids have add. in these times alot of people think that if you don't have a bradybunch or leaveittobeaver kid, something is wrong. Yes, there are kids out there with add and adhd, but I think alot of parents and teachers go overboard.

i take 30 mgs of Adderall a day, i have been taking it for about 8 years now. i get paranoid about bugs all the time.
well i have ADHD and i gave one of my highest dose pills to a friend who doesn't have ADHD and a lower dose to another person who doesn't have ADHD and the one with the lower dose just couldn't feel her face and the one with the high dose was hallucinating for 48 hrs she couldn't even sleep. I myself don't experience anything
Taking drugs for ADHD can result to hallucinations. But just for somne people not all. If you stop taking the symptoms are not going away!!!!

My son's doctor had my son so fucked up on meds that i had enough and pulled him of everything, can i tell you that he may still have some issues, he's better off the meds than on them. Alot of times it is the drugs interaction with each other that casues the symptoms described herein and not one drug in particular.
Re: justtfax – hey i agree, my son's teacher calls me as if im obligated by law to sedate my kid so her job is easier, i finally told her ass to do her job and deal with it, i know he gets a lil annoying but i wish i might risk his health just so she can deal with her job. they had him on so many meds and every time a new symptom would emerge they would just add another drug, he was 10 years old and on 7 drugs at once…wtf is that.
