Olympics And (More Importantly) Sponsors Still Support Phelps

Filed under: Zportz > Michael Phelps

phelpsbong__opt1.jpg

So we all know that Michael "Don't-Look-At-The-Face" Phelps got caught smoking the Mary Jane. He has since said he was sorry for it.

And while there was some concern over the future of Phelps' endorsements and ability to compete in the 2012 Olympics, it looks like things will more or less be okay, even if his dignity is left a little bruised.

At least when it comes to Speedo and Omega.

Phelps sponsor Speedo released a statement saying, "In light of Michael Phelps' statement yesterday, Speedo would like to make it clear that it does not condone such behavior and we know that Michael truly regrets his actions. Michael Phelps is a valued member of the Speedo team and a great champion. We will do all that we can to support him and his family."

And the luxury Swiss watchmaker released a statement saying, "The current story in the press involves Michael Phelps' private life and is, as far as Omega is concerned, a nonissue."

As far as the Olympics are concerned, under World Anti-Doping Agency rules, Phelps is held to their standards only during competition. The International Olympic Committee said, "Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion. He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model."

What Phelps really needs to do is reconsider who his friends (and his enemies) are!

At least when it comes to Speedo and Omega.

HARRY LOVE'S TO BONG OUT IN HIS BANANA HAMMOCK!

  2. 2

Sounds as though Omega has it right. What a non-issue! Does his smoking a little weed make him any less of a great swimmer? Of course not!
Just more typical American anti-pot hysteria.
If Obama can admit to having done not only weed but a little blow while a student, then surely we can get over this one, too.

  3. 3

Well Good Everybody smokes a little mary jane every now and then! :)

  4. 4

Everybody Smokes a little mary jane every now and then! :)

  5. 5

    what a douche!

  6. 6

    A BIG LESSON!

  7. 7

I'm a right-wing conservative Republican and I say, leave him alone"… This is no big deal.

    8

    Pot is not a drug!

  9. 9

    Um if he's smoking a ROOR, I don't think it's his first time…

  10. 10

    yeah baby!

  11. 11

Lucky bugger, it turns out not to be a multi-million dollar bong hit

  12. 12

I feel sorry for him. What shit friends to have, seriously. And his competitors should be glad if he becomes into weed. Weed will make his performance worse. This shouldn't even be news worthy, except to gossip whores and money making shit bag friends.

  13. 13

ZZZZZzzzzzz!!!! AMERICA, THIS IS A FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM YOUR SUPER-COOL LAIDBACK FRIEND CANADA, STOP BEING SO FUCKING UPTIGHT AND GET OVER IT. HE'S A GENIUS ATHLETE AND A KID. HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXPERIMENT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. MOVE ON!!!

  14. 14

Ear wax comes in two forms - dry and wet. Your heritage determines what type of wax you will be born with. Most Black, White, and Hispanics have wet wax, this is an oily, sticky and tan colored. Asian and Native Americans have dry wax, which is a sticky, brittle and grey color.

  15. 15

I'm so happy for him. I hope he looks around for "friends with cameras" before doing this again…..

  16. 16

Elisabitch the baby hoarder on the view, freaked on his ass.
What a freakin wind bag. Leave Phelps alone, what he does in his private life is no body's business. Loosen up USA!

  17. 17

I support his ugly ass now mother than ever. Puff puff pass!!!!

  18. 18

*now mother fuckers more than ever!!!! Shit, it has been a long day.

  19. 19

Smokin' a little marijuana is better than drinking alcohol. whatever.

  20. 20

Who's fucking uptight?? Only ultra conservative right wing assholes would crucify him for doing this "drug"…those are the same people, however that are embezzling $, hiring prostitutes, doing harder drugs and molesting children… :)

  21. 21

People should be impressed by the fact he can smoke pot and still win how many medals was it? The fact he got in the pool and still knows how to properly use a bong… Yep, impressive that he's still so sports minded and not slackin' on the couch.

  22. 22

    TAKE HIS SHIT!!!! HAHHAHA

  23. 23

Perez who was the douche that sold the picture?

  24. 24

I think its fricken great! He is and always will be my number one hottie! Good for him!

  25. 25

I am a suppoter of the legalizing of maryjane. I would rather have my kids smoke pot anyday of the week than to even touch a drop of alcohol. When I saw him smoking it, I was not offended in any way whatsoever, it actually made me think he was living like a normal person for once.

  26. 26

I smoke 2 joints in the morning I smoke 2 joints at night!!!

We agree, it's medicine for cancer patients.Re: harrybalsac – harry, we love you. ♥

  28. 28

I HATE it when celebrities get busted doing stupid things, and then say they're "so sorry", and that they "regret their actions".
They don't "regret their actions"…they regret getting CAUGHT. Do his sponsors honestly think for one second that he would be regretting smoking pot if he hadn't gotten caught?

  29. 29

Alright, i wasn't going to comment, but after reading some of the ones below, i feel like i have no choice…

I just have a little piece of info for all you out there who say "omg i can't believe he smoked weed like no way, he's an athlete that kids look up to," etc. etc. etc….

remember that last president we had, george bush… yeah that guy. he snorted cocaine. did he apologize? no, he didn't. so why should michael phelps? he's just an athlete.

this is america people, the guy next door may chop up people and put them in a freezer, so what's the big deal about people smoking some pot. get over it.

  30. 30

Every single company he's sponsoring, each and every damned "CEO/CFO/big wig knows they've sucked on a bong too. LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. 31

dude, its just pot. Since he's supposedly ADHD, it's not surprising he smokes. Most ADD/ADHD folks love pot

  32. 32

Oh please! we all know this is a regular thing Phelps does behind closed doors. Now that he is famous he needs to hide his shit!!!

  33. 33

Michael Phelps is a douche bag. I wish this would have fucked up his career..

  34. 34

good, im happy he didnt lose those sponsorships. its just weed.. people need to calm the fuck down.

  35. 35

Do I get a free bong and some Mary Jane when I buy a overpriced omega watch?

  36. 36

Why the big deal? We have an admitted crackhead as a president.

  37. Niobe says – reply to this

    37

Asides figuring out who his friends and enemies are he also needs to asses his behaviour. He has too much to lose and worked too hard to get there, would it be worth it for a stupid high? maybe 30 minutes of being high does that equate all the years he put in to get to where he is? I think not!! I am hoping to chucking it up to lesson learned!

  38. 38

This makes his whole story even more disgusting. I cannot believe all of his sponors are sticking with him…although i think the real reason they are is because he is a record holder and the best swimmer out there. Soooo many kids that have ADHD and ADD look up to him because he was able to beat that and become the best swimmer in the world. So are kids going to start drinking young and smoking pot because he is?? Most likely yes because that is what their role model is doing and i think these sponsers need to teach him a lesson and drop his ass..because so far he hasnt gotten in trouble for an illegal substance…its like why dont ya just keep on smoking and take pictures for everyone to see cuz you aint gonna get in trouble…that is what he is learning…its sad…and i hope the olympic committee does something like ban him from the next olympics…and that will DEF. make him stop doing stupid stuff!
I am so disgusted and could keep going on but i will shut up and move on!!

  39. k-lee says – reply to this

    39

    "Michael "Don't-Look-At-The-Face" Phelps"

LOL stop saying that. He's cute! It's sad he only likes whores

  40. 40

whoever took this picture is an effing dyykkeeee. First off, the only reason this picture would be taken is to sell it to the media, so eff off you hoe whoever you are who used a genuinely good person and photographed them at the one point in their life wheere they made a mistake. well everyone makes mistakes and smoking has nothing to do with him being a fantastic swimmer. as far as im concerned, whatever choiceshe makes on his own time not during olympic season is HIS BUSINESS!!

  41. 41

    hes ugly..

  42. 42

As the faster swimmer on the planet and an american, he's endowed with the inalienable right to do whatever the fuck he wants. XD

  43. 43

I knew I like the boy for some reason besides swimming!! Leave his ass alone is pot, not Crack…

  44. 44

See…getting high is for normal people, too!

  45. 45

I see nothing wrong with anyone's private use of marijuana (as long as the user does not disturb or endanger the general public). I partially feel sorry for Phelps, but he had to know that his agents and marketers were setting him up for a fall when they sold him to the adoring public as a "perfect hero".
    .
Phelps is one of the greatest athletes ever, but he has the social skills and graces of someone who spent endless hours in a swimming pool, instead of interacting with a mix of different people and growing up "normal".
    .
It's similar to the cases of people like Lindsay Lohan and Shia LaBeouf: the money and fame comes with a price, and you DO give up a lot of your privacy when you reach for the brass ring.

  46. 46

    Re: Sabres29
If kids with ADD/ADHD smoked pot, they would be able to pay attention. Pot calms you down.
ANYWAY, are you saying Phelps shouldn't drink alcohol either? I mean, kids shouldn't be drinking, so they see him drinking does it mean that they are too? He's of legal age, he can drink if he wants, and drinking is worse than smoking pot. Parents should be responsible for their kids, not him. Don't blame him.

  47. 47

For everyone that says "Big deal, its just a bit of pot" well it is a big deal that I had to explain to my 7 yr old son who loves swimming and idolises this jerk (and wants to BE HIM ) what a bong is and why Michael Phelps is in trouble. I am angry that I've had to have this discussion with my son at such a young age.

He is in the public eye. He knows there are cameras round every corner, but is so arrogant he thinks he can get away with this behaviour ??? Whether he likes it or not (and yes, I am sure he likes the positive attention that has been lavished on him), Phelps is in the public eye and needs to take responsibility for that. If he doesn't like being in the public eye and wants a private life, he should stop writing books about himself and give up all his endorsements.

  48. 48

GIVE HIM A BREAK!! Who doesn't smoke weed, for crying out loud? That could be anyone in the picture. If he starts smoking crack, snorting lines or popping E, then he's a loser…but Weed? Give me a break!!

  49. 49

Re: Lulustre – 48 7 is the the correct age to discuss these things. Aren't they doing that in your school already? Red ribbon weeks? Cub Scouts?
Seriously, don't be so stupid to think seven is too young.
    .
This is a blessing for you. Use it!

  50. 50

    Re: Lulustre

I've seen a pick with Michael Phelps with a beer in his hand… Should he stop drinking too?

  51. 51

If he was black they would call him a disgrace and revoke his medals

  52. 52

    Rather stoned than drunk.

  53. 53

    Re: SWEETPIECE LOVES THE OBAMAS!

"This is a blessing for me"… Jesus christ - that is so demented. I am not keeping my kids in the dark about drugs but I resent being forced to confirm to my son that his hero obviously condones drug use… Where does that leave parents when we say 'don't do drugs guys' when people they look up to are doing just that in public ????

If a photograph of me at a party sucking on a bong circulated round the office, I would be fired instantly. I manage 14 young staff and am expected to lead by example. How's it any different for this guy, who has exposure on a world scale???

  54. 54

    Re: Osakhomen

Last time I heard, alcohol wasn't illegal. As long as he's using it responsibly, why I have no problem.

  55. 55

Re: Lulustre – I couldn't agree more with your take on this. Far too many people on this board make judgments about things like drug use based on their own opinions and experiences, without thinking what a parent goes through trying to teach their kids meaningful values. Adults can make informed decisions as to whether or not to use drugs - seven-year-olds cannot.

  56. 56

Well would you have a talk with you son that alcohol is for adults too? Or does he already know what it is because you've already talked to him about it, or he's seen people drink? And do you think that would make him want to drink?

And anyway pot is a lot less harmful then alcohol is. The fact that it's illegal is ridiculous. ALSO when's the last time you heard of a pot-head father beating his kids…. Now alcohol will make you crazy, and it's addictive…

  57. 57

definitely not his first time if hes smokin out of a bonggg, ahah im glad someone captured this, makes me like him thatttt much better! but whoever dids an assss

  58. 58

Who cares???!!! It's just a little Mary Jane.

  59. 59

    Re: Osakhomen

The assertion by many that pot isn't harmful (or 'as harmful' as other things) is absolutely ridiculous. In my teens I smoked pot sure, sometimes with my two cousins. They're both hardened drug addicts of 10+ years now. In and out of prison. Sick, screwed up people who steal from their grandma. Now I am not saying that this is what happens to everyone that smokes pot - I certainly haven't gone down that path with them and most people wouldn't - however the fact of the matter is that they started with pot, and when it got boring/had less effect they moved on to harder drugs. I am not going to raise my kids to think pot is ok/harmless but other drugs are bad - its not that easy. My aunt/uncle took this approach to my cousins and well, the heartbreaking result speaks for itself.

  60. 60

    i smoke weed errryday

  61. 61

Jesus, it's just pot. it's not going to affect his career at all unless he decides to start smoking it every day!! then he'll just get lazy. hahaha

  62. 62

I witnessed Michael Phelps smoking weed in Vegas also!

  63. 63

    Re: Lulustre

The same can be said about alcohol.

  64. 64

Why does everyone have to watch what they do because today's children are so stupid they follow everybody's actions like sheep? All T.V. and movies have to be monitored, people have to watch what they say, models can't be too skinny, when do the parents take responsibility and raise their kids instead of expecting the rest of the world to do it for them? If they did, their kids should be intelligent enough to make their own informed decisions about drugs, diet, and everything else!

  65. 65

    Re: Osakhomen

And anyway, I'm not saying weed is harmless, but alcohol is just as harmless, and people seem to freak out more about weed because it's illegal. I mean, lets use our brain people and see which one is really worse. People should worry about alcohol more because drink too much of that stuff you're dead. Smoke too much, and what? Yes, people smoke weed, then move up to other stuff. Why? IDK, since weed is a different sort of high. But People do it with alcohol, people drink more and more, and then go into harder drugs… remember alcohol is a drug. My main point is that reactions of him smoking should be the same as him drink alcohol, whether good or bad, they should consistent.

  66. 66

I dont even care… so he let loose a little. its not like he is a complete stoner and just gets high all day! i dont get why it is such a big deal.

  67. 67

Of course they support him. He's white. If it were Usain Bolt everyone would be talking shit all over the news and does he take performing enhancement drugs too. But when it's your American "Hero" white boy Phelps it's okay.

  68. 68

    Drugs are bad…m'kay!

He's not the first Olympian to smoke a little MJ and he won't be the last. It's disappointing because he's supposed to be a role model for kids. That pedestal can get pretty narrow though and he slipped off. It happens. He's human.

  69. 69

Re: DrinkYourKoolaid – Gross and interesting…

  70. 70

    damn. nice roor bong.

  71. 71

What a stupid thing to worry about? America needs to get over thier hypocrisy issues with marijuana. Alcohol is a drug just like weed is. Pick your drug of choice I guess it is as long as it is legal and doesn't offend the Evangelocos.

  72. 72

#55…a drug is a drug. So you support the drug of alcohol but not the drug of marijuana…typical American Christian hypocrisy. Did you know the alcohol is the ONLY drug to cause violence? Yet, dumb Americans drink themselves into a stupor and then get behind the wheel, yet they want to condemn this poor boy for smoking a bong. I would tell everyone to kiss off.

  73. 73

Okay. Weed is not a drug. Take it from Kat Williams, "marijuana is not a drug, its a plant, that so happens to grow like that, and if you so happen to set it on fire..it has some effects"

  74. 74

    He's got mu support!
I think he's a great kid, and while I don't advocate pot use I can see how a young kid could make an error in judgment.
As long as he's not hyped up on steroids, his recreational use is up to him!

  75. 75

Theres not even smoke in the bong!! He should have said he was just pretending or some shit.

  76. 76

what does Michael smooking tell ya?
Weed is all good. Micheal does it and can still be a swimming champ.

  77. 77

haha yeah i didnt even notice there wasnt any smoke it in. haha and i just noticed the bud bottle in the background!

  78. 78

COME ON EVERYBODY HAS SMOKED THE GANJA ONCE IN THEIR LIFE!!!!!!!! THAT WHY HE EATS ALL THAT SHIT BEFORE HE SWIMS!!!!! OH!!!!! NOW WE KNOW!!!!

  79. 79

    Re: lisanicol

OK, for starters I am not American and I am not a Christian. Your assertion that alcohol is the "only drug to cause violence" further demonstrates your ignorance. I'll put it down to lack of real life experience, because if you'd ever seen anyone overloaded on coke or ice, you'd see they were capable of a hell of a lot of violence.

  80. 80

Who ever took this picyure and sold it to the media is a jealous, evil motherfucker. I hope whoever sold this picture gets their face rearranged!

  81. 81

FIRST OF ALL > MP can do whatever the FUCK he wants !

Only if YOU have 8 gold medals can you then say something, IF not everyone should FUCK off, this boy has earned is bong hit and MORE!

  82. 82

    BLAZE IT!!

  83. 83

Abso-fucking-lutely incredible. If he'd been in a bar sucking down 15 beers, nobody would have said squat. It's time for the US to decriminalize marijuana.

  84. 84

Oh wow, he was doing a bong, big frickin' woop, its not like he's actually doing the Olympics right now, nor is he doing steroids. What was your 20 year old kid doing last weekend? BIG WOOP!!

  85. 85

    Michael's body, Michael's choice!

  86. 86

No surprise there, the guy is a national heroe and what he did is just kiddie stuff… who never smoked???

  87. 87

oh for fucks sake…it's godamn weed.

seriously…get a freakin life. it's not even a drug it's a damn plant. it's not like he's some drug fiend here folks.

does anybody realize how many people smoke out in the world…no, because everyone is forced to do it behind closed doors since the USA is so wierd about a plant that grows naturally and doesn't hurt anything.

smoke on phelps…just don't let anyone take pictures of you!!!

  88. 88

What he needs to do is to watch for cameras. He will have to learn that when you become a commodity, you learn to have eyes in the back of your head. No unguarded moments unless you know everyone in the room. He's young and I am afraid a little stupid. Things like this will force him to grow up fast!

  89. 89

Re: lisanicol – Alcohol is the only drug that causes violence??? You are spending wait to much time with your head in the Ozone!

  90. 90

Everyone needs to stop acting like pot is Satan. Maybe you should try it for yourselves. It's not bad at all. You get a little goofy, a little hungry, and a little tired. But for the most part, it makes you happy and at peace. Just keep it in perspective.

  91. 91

Great. This was a chance for a big lesson to be learned, but as usual sports celebrites get away with everything and the corporate big-names continue to sponsor them without regard on possible effects on young people that look up to these athletes. I'm sure every parent looks forward to the day their 12-year old kid says, "But Michael Phelps smokes pot, so that means I can."

Marijuana is a drug, no matter how you look at it. It is as addictve and dangerous as cocaine or methadone. It causes lung cancer, fries your brain cells, makes you all lethargic, dulls any pain or feelings (why do you think it works for people with medical issues?).

You said it right, Perez, "What Phelps really needs to do is reconsider who his friends (and his enemies) are!" He also needs to wake up and realize he's 23 years old and a whole new generation of prospective Olympic swimmers are looking up to him as a role model. Smarten up Phelps and say "no" to all kinds of drugs, including pot and booze.

  92. 92

OF COURSE EVERYTHING WILL BE OK FOR THE WHITE KID. TYPICAL, IF IT WERE A BLACK CELEBRITY HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THROWN UNDER THE BUS!!!!

  93. 93

Admit it, Perez, you see that photo of the bong and wish it was your weiner that M Phelps was smoking!

  94. 94

    Re: Osakhomen
i am talking about his DWI when he was 18

  95. 95

He Screwed Up - Who Hasn't - Give Him a Break!

He is a Kid & an Amazing Athlete! he Apologized!
    Do You Want Blood??
    Let it Go!!

  96. 96

Haha, it's funny how people say they're sorry that they did something. They're not sorry for their actions, but sorry for getting in trouble.

  97. 97

ah gosh Michael I love you… yeah enemies is the key word for the person who took this pic and banked off of it assholes..

  98. 98

    omg who cares ??
everyone smokes atleast once in their life esp. if your in college !

  100. 100

a big lesson is right. he now knows he cant trust his friends… it is deff not an omega issue…its a fuckin watch. and i agree with the 2nd comment on this thread….get over it. he is living it up because of all his sucess….the burgers and junk he eats is worse for him (especially as an athelete id assume) than the weed imo yet thats okay…hmmmm
blah blah blah. i think he is cute in a forest gump kinda way.
