Colleague Defends Bale's Bale-istic Tirade
Excuses excuses.
As the audio recording showed us all, Christian Bale has one hell of a diva side to him - not to mention being extremely unprofessional and an all-round douche supremo.
Back in July of last year, the British wacktor was caught on tape by the sound guys going crazy on the set of the upcoming film Terminator Salvation. Bale started bitching at the director of photography who began to adjust the lighting during his scene.
So, now that the audio has leaked online, the movie's assistant director, Bruce Franklin, is trying to spin this as much as possible, though it might be pretty difficult considering that Bale was heard on tape using the word fuck 35 times.
Frankling says, "If you are working in a very intense scene and someone takes you out of your groove… It was the most emotional scene in the movie. And for him to get stopped in the middle of it - he is very intensely involved in his character. He didn't walk around like that all day long. It was just a moment and it passed. This was my second movie with Christian, and it has always been a good experience with him. He is so dedicated to the craft. I think someone is begging to make some noise [controversy] about this, but I don't think it's fair. The art of acting is not paint by numbers, it's an art form."

Reports reveal that Bale has a history of throwing tantrums, especially on set. Even his former publicist said Bale has a temper, adding that when the actor was a teen, "If something wasn’t just so, Christian would just erupt. He would yell until he was red in the face. It was very intimidating. When he filmed a movie called Metroland with Emily Watson, his nickname on set was Tandy because he was always throwing tantrums."
Sounds like someone needs anger management classes. Pronto.

I understand that it's not easy to get in character and must be a pain if somebody interrupts your focus and acts unprofessionally. And, I can understand yelling at someone for that. But, Bale humiliated the offender. He nearly ripped his skin off for a long long time. I'm having a hard time imagining some other big stars being capable of doing the same thing. Just walk away instead and bang a wall.

Apparently it's not the first time he blew up on somebody, he did it to his family! I just think he has a temper and he should probably work on it, but i'm sure he's got a nice side too.

That Batman's voice got just a bit rough when he was in costume, but noemal as Bruse Wayne. The director wanted to re-create that.

I am so sick of hearing about actor's "craft" and "being in character". Give me a break. Bale is an unstable, emotional roller-coaster. In any other industry, he would be fired, suspended, whatever…but not tolerated. Bad behavior is just that. Bale is just an actor, he doesn't save lives.

I understand what the director is saying - I know MANY actors like this who get all geared up and dialed into the scene and the slightest thing throws them off — so they get completely PISSED OFF. I understand that.

At our post production studio we had actors come in to do voice over or looping and some of them would start screaming if our food service area had closed — they expected someone to go fetch them a particular sandwich or drink and they would refuse to continue until they were fed. (I think that falls under YOUR PERSONAL ASSISTANT's DUTY to keep you fed not a secretary from accounting's problem). So I've seen Divas in action and it's pretty ugly.

Not only do I believe Bruce Franklin is right, but I think this little tape is taken a bit out of context. If you listen to it, it sounds like this douche Shane Hurlbert had already done something this several other times before Christian lashed out at him. Besides that, when you are acting, and really in the moment, those feelings are real for you, so if you are suddenly ripped out of the scene, just like in "real life" when you are angry/sad/hurt — whatever intense feelings are still there whether or not the scene is over. I think that being passionate is a far different thing from being a "Diva" as people are saying. Also, maybe people should do some research when they keep bringing up his alleged "assault" of mother and sister, which was a verbal response to them insulting his wife and child after he would not give them 100,000 quid. Which were dropped because hey- it isn't a crime not to give your family money!

i think bruce franklin had to do what was right. In all honesty sure it was out of line for Christian to yell at Shane. But Shane should not have been changing lights in the middle of an intense scene. It was very unprofessional to do that while the actor is acting, anyone in the industry should know that! But what people should worry about is how that segment of noise got out? It sounded way to good to be from a cell phone.

This is what happens with people who are worshipped by others. At the end of the day acting is just another job. People who work in health care, the educational system, the military, the police or the fire department are much more deserving of our praise. Instead they are usually underpaid.
