      I'm a 23 year old asian, and all through grade school (and into Middle School) was teased by kids doing the same thing Miley is doing in the picture. Over the years, I've grown a thicker skin and do realize that, growing up, most kids have done that at some point or another but it doesn't make it right. In school, if kids were caught making those gestures, they were told to apologize by faculty….This situation shouldn't be any different. She may have not done it with the intent to insult or make fun of another race, but she obviously has offended many people (whether they're fans or not!).

      To everyone who's saying that Miley shouldn't apologize because everyone has stretched out their eyes at some point in their lives– you guys are ignoring a very important historical context here. Stretching out your eyes with the intention to imitate an Asian person's eyes has historically almost ALWAYS been to ridicule and humiliate the physical aspects of the Asian race. Just because "everyone" has made a racist gesture at some point in his/her life doesn't make the gesture acceptable. "Everyone" was racist and a slave owner in this country at one point, but did that make racism okay? No.

      What if Miley stuck out her lips to make them appear larger to imitate black people's lips? What if she stretched out her nose to imitate a black person's "gorilla" nose? So what if a black person would have been in that picture too? If imitating large lips and large noses was as common as stretching out eyes, it STILL would not make the gestures "okay."

      What Miley did was wrong, and anyone else who had done it whether among friends or to an Asian person to make him/her feel bad needs to recognize that what they did was wrong too. I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no such thing as "harmless and acceptable" racism.
