Angelina Jolie Requests Aid For Refugees In Thailand
And she's off!
Our favorite celebutarian embarked on another humanitarian mission this week.
Angelina Jolie has asked the Thai government to grant Myanmar refugees in northern Thailand greater liberties.
Saint Ang was busy goodwilling over in Thailand on Wednesday, spending a day listening to refugees tell their tales of the difficulties they have faced during years of living in camps.
An unstable political environment has forced people from Myanmar to flee to Thailand, which already generously hosts other refugees. Jolie asked for more freedom of movement for the refugees, banking on Thailand's past with fleeing people.
She said, "I was saddened to meet a 21-year-old woman who was born in a refugee camp, who has never even been out of the camp and is now raising her own child in a camp. With no foreseeable chance that these refugees will soon be able to return to Burma (Myanmar), we must find some way to help them work and become self reliant."
Her name has the word "angel" in it for a reason!

Ok. So first of all, what are her kids doing exactly? I don't see how all of this constant traveling can be good for them. Secondly, she called it Burma, which is a common enough mistake, except if you're someone who walks around pretending to be a saint because of all these humanitarian projects. Third, I read an interview with her from CNN and she really did not speak that intelligently. I appreciate that her whole thing is refugees, and she could certainly be doing worse things, but she didn't appear to know about the situation she was discussing. She only ever seems to be telling the government or the UN to help. Anybody could go from place to place yelling at someone else to do something. So I don't get what makes her so special. Lastly, she needs to stop wearing those loose dresses that make her look like an old lady.

There is actually a lot of controversy surrounding the various names of the country. So I doubt that Angelina referred to it as Burma out of ignorance; I'm sure she is aware that the official name according to the military junta is Myanmar and it is most likely a deliberate decision on her part. BBC News always calls it Burma, for example. Secondly, Perez, don't you think it's relevant to mention the fact that, while Thailand does generously host a number of refugees and this is commendable, it has been not-so-generous towards a certain ethnic group (the Rohingya) from Myanmar? Does putting them on motorless boats and drifting them out to sea ring any bells? I know you're super busy, but do you actually read the news or what? Anyway, you could have at least mentioned it as it's a very recent revelation and is a major scandal for Thailand, and I'm guessing that Angelina is cleverly trying to appeal to the government's desire to repair its image. Great timing!

Re: jk181181 – I checked that out actually, not wanting to make a fool of myself, and the BBC itself said that using Burma is done because most people wouldn't recognize Myanmar, not because of the politics of it. There is certainly controversy because the name was put in place by such a brutal regime, but it's actually a more democratic name, because it includes all of the ethnic groups of the region, not just the elite, and the name itself will probably be in place whether the regime survives or not. Angelina hops from country to country dealing primarily with refugee situations, when she's not promoting films of course. I just have a hard time believing she's done enough actual research to make an in depth decision like that, instead of simply calling the country by the most well-known name.
