Spielberg's Dreamworks in Jeopardy?

Filed under: Business Blitz > Steven Spielberg

stevensp.jpg

We mentioned last year that Steven Spielberg and his "people" were working hard to make Dreamworks a totally independent studio.

Things seemed to be going Steven's way (i.e. a big Indian media company offered to back them with a few hundred million dollars)….until now.

Dreamworks was going to have Universal Pictures distribute its movies, but as of Friday, that deal is dead in the water.

And now, according to the New York Times, Steven Spielberg is talking with the Walt Disney Co. about a distribution deal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal said, "Universal Pictures has ended discussions with DreamWorks for a distribution agreement. Over the past several weeks DreamWorks has demanded material changes to previously agreed upon terms. It is clear that DreamWorks' needs and Universal's business interests are no longer in alignment. We wish them luck in their pursuit of funding and distribution of their future endeavors."

Good luck with finalizing a deal in this crap economy, Mr. Spielberg.

    Open Letter To Steven Spielberg:

Shame on you!!! You can finance this company yourself. You are personally worth billions, and have a deal with Universal for their theme park rides, based upon your movies, a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars. You don't need this money from outsiders. Dare to take the risk to do it youself Mr. Spielberg. To hell with Dream Works, I want to see Amblin Pictures (Studios)…it is time, don't you think? Imagine that, it would be great! Just thin your film budgets down, and do it!!! It doesn't, or shouldn't, take…200 million dollars to make a film. You can make good looking films with digital cameras ala the Red Camera for 50 million, or less, even 25 million or lower. Look at the original Twilight Zone, what was great about that show, was its stories–that was the big special effect, they didn't need huge budgets, just special stories. BTW, I have script for you, call me on it. The film would cost 13 to 20 million to make depending on whether 3-D is employed or not.

For those who say he needs to fund his own movies–he doesn't need funding, he needs a DISTRIBUTOR, not the same thing. He needs a system of wheelers and dealers to sell his movies to theaters all over the world.

  21. 21

Does this mean that the movie - Indiana Jones and the Hip Replacement - will not be released?

  22. 22

Steven can certainly afford to start his own distribution company. Cheap jew bastard. Yeah, he must have lost some money from fellow jew Madoff, but thats life.He has tons of money made with is hack special effects popcorn movies stashed away. BTW, the Jaws and Duel may be an exception from the hack jobs he did.

  25. 25

His movies suck. Te only thing he is god at is taking peoples money in exchange for a shitty product.

    Re: SWEETPIECE
I love it! He's a greedy Liberal dog. He's not rich like those rich Republicans anymore!

  27. 27

Not sure why, but I can't stand Spielberg. He acts so arrogant and self-entitled - like he's owed something beyond the massive fortune he's already made. He's so fucking greedy.

    Re: litzie
Good! Too bad it'll never teach the greedy pig…
