Hello, Twilight effect?

The CW has reportedly picked up a pilot based on L.J. Smith's book series, Vampire Diaries.

The first book of the series was originally published in 1993.

The books revolve around a young lady who is torn between two vampire brothers, one good and the other evil.

The brothers battle for her soul, and the souls of her small town friends and family.

Would you watch?

    6. 106

the books are good, and twilight effect my ass, people have always loved good books on vampires you fucking tard, it's only the teenyboppers that really like twilight. Remember Dracula you fucktard, and other vamp series, you are so stupid Perez geeezzzzzzz. Buffy was way better than twilight, It's just hype. uggh

    7. 107

The girl in the pic looks like the actress who plays Vanessa on Gossip Girl… but with blonde hair? Anyone else think so?

    8. 108

Yep! I read the book, its interesting as hell…but the actors would have to be really effin good looking!!!

    9. 109

I just want Bill. I'd take Bill over Edward any day of the week.

    10. 110

OMG! I read these books when I was in junior high. They are so much better than Twilight. I'm excited!

    11. 111

      yes maybee =)

    12. 112

mmm i've read these books, dont know how i feel about it. well maybe at least it will be entertaining.

    13. 113

Twilight is an OKAY book, but I'm SO sick of all this vampire stuff. Does anyone have any originality these days?

    14. 114

omg yes! i love this book series. I dunno damon the evil one is kind of sexy because he is evil lol.

    15. 115

I've read these books & I would like to see this.

    16. 116

OMFG, YES! Twilight is the poor man's Vampire Diaries. I read these books in the nineties, LONG before Rob Pattinson was fugging up the big screen. Bring on Elena, Stefan and Damon!

    17. 117

absolutely! these books are awesome - better than twilight in my opinion, and i like twilight too.

    18. 118

      everythings going vampire these days

    19. 119

I'm a completely loyal fan of Buffy, and loved it all throughout it's time on TV…..But! I also read the Vampire Diaries series as a young girl, and it's a pretty fantastic YA series, don't knock it unless you've read it. Could be promising depending on who does it, and who they cast.

    20. 120

i actually read these books, and they are much better than the twilight series.

so i am actually really happy to hear this.
this series deserves to be recognized.
      yay!

    21. 121

yes i would. i have the books and they are good. so i will be watching!

    22. 122

      Re: JenniJen

      yes! you are the best.
      love itt.!

    23. 123

I really like vampire books and vampires in general, even before Twilight.
However, After reading about 3 Vampire books release 2007 on wards they all revolve around a mortal girl who loves a vampire blah blah blah blah…

Where is the real vampireness?'Not this teen garbage? Don't get me wrong, I loved Twilight but now ever freaking vampire book is like Twilight.
I'd read it and see though.

    24. 124

This book is a million times better then Twilight, Twilight ripped off this author's idea and book storyline. Finally someone realizes it, woot woot!

    25. 125

I read the first one. It was pretty alright. Jumps around alot though.
I've been meaning to read the second one but haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't think Vampire Diaries could ever have the same effect on people like Twilight….but….its worth a try? (:

    26. 126

OMG I love this book series yes I would totally watch!!

    27. 127

I signed up and registered for this site just to comment on this. I loved these books when I was younger and read everything by LJ Smith I could get my hands on. When I got older, I cleared out my bookshelf of all the younger books, but I kept all her books and reread them. I do, however, think the CW is trying to jump on the Twilight/True Blood train, as I think the Night World series or even the Secret Circle would make a much better TV show. That being said, I definitely would watch and thanks so much to the posters for talking about the new book, I had no idea that they rereleased everything and that there was something new!

    28. 128

      hell yeah

    29. 129

Re: mellll. – I think that you have to keep an open mind about the Vampire Diaries. I read them when I was about 12 and I am 28 now. They were my favorite series, until LJ Smith's next series, The Secret Circle, came out which is even better. These stories are not fabulous because of the vampires, just like Twilight isn't fabulous because of the vampires. LJ SMith's books are more about finding the strength within yourselves to do something you are afraid of, sacrifice, empathy, and some many other themes. If I have any complaint about Twilight is the nice way eerything is tied into pretty package at the end. The thing that I think makes these books, as well as Twilight great, are the authors' abilities to develop characters we can see something of ourselves in and they fantasy of the love stories involved. I would try Vampire Diaries before you put them in some category of lame. It is ignorant if you have never read them. The series is 17 years old. The first book came out in 1991.

    30. 130

no i wont watch it!…my heart belongs to twilight!

    31. 131

the CW is riding the wave!

    32. 132

      the books suck!!!

    33. 133

      :\

I don't know…I'd try it but I'm not reading the books.

    34. 134

      hell yeah.

i read the books and people do have to remember these books were published more than a decade before twilight so you can't diss the book. i absolutely loved the books (there are four of them) and I'm currently reading LJ Smith's other stuff cause she's pretty good.

    35. 135

      hell no!!!!
      they will ruin it!!!!

    36. 136

read the books and loved them so ya id watch it

    37. 137

This is THE original teenage vampire series…it was written in the EARLY 90s and ANYONE who has read it will see the similarities between it and Twilight. I LOVE the stories that L. Jane Smith has written compared to any others… I AM TOTALLY EXCITED!

    38. 138

I would completly watch this show. I love vampire books and movies and shows. I cannot wait till the House of Night movie.

    39. 139

      wow..

    40. 140

NOW THIS BOOK IS BETTER THEN TWILIGHT.
BUT I STILL LOVE JASPER HALE. ;;)

    41. 141

Sure! Anything about vampires, count me in!

    42. 142

YES, i will be catching this pilot. Funny enough is that I've been describing it as being like Twilight meets Gossip Girl purely for the fact that there were gorgeous vampires and gorgeous and popular Queen Bee types in the story and also the whole no i can't be with her, i'm a vampire brood brood brood from the main guy. It is actually perfect for the CW lol.

The show should at the very least grab some attention with its cast: Beautiful girls, and even Sexier ITALIAN boys (a reserved, gentlemanly younger brother with a backbone for those Edward Cullen lovers, and a smooth, dangerous, and slightly cocky older brother - love his lines). Born sometime in the Italian Renaissance - there should be flashbacks in Italy.

    43. 143

For those thinking that vampirism is the new fad, it's been in popular fiction for at least a decade now. I'm talking mass production of serial romances and stuff like that (ie: the Anita Blake series), not classics like Nasferatu and such. Which is probably Why it seems all new to teens today, cuz previously it was mostly in classics or in adult-themed books. If anything, I think Twilight's author had great timing with the release of her books whereas LJ released hers before it was already a popular genre and probably didn't have the same kind of advertising opportunities.

I recommend her Night World series for those who like vampires but want a bit more than the typical storyline (2 kinds of vampires, witches, shapeshifters, humans all in…2 worlds)

    44. 144

      thats so stupid
they are totally trying to rip off of twilights success

    45. Jaded says – reply to this

      145

Yay! I loved these books in high school. I was hoping they wold have picked up Secret Circle instead, but I guess since she's writing again, she has a new book from this series coming out, and the Twilight series is doing so well it made sense to grab these. I hope the CW follows the True Blood model and makes each chapter and episode, instead of trashing the thing like they did with the Gossip Girl books.

    46. 146

oh hells ya! I love Elena and Stephan!!! I hope it happens…

    47. 147

no! i didn't watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer; i didn't watch Twilight; why would i watch this crap?

    48. 148

yawn. where's the hot LESBO vampiress'!?

    49. 149

soo lame! RIP OFF OF TWILIGHT!!

      And theres nooo rob patty???

      soooo
      NO I WILL NOT. WATCH.

    50. 150

I FREAKING LOVE THIS BOOK SERIES!!! been a fan for like ever! lol…I'm incredibly excited!

    51. Cery says – reply to this

      151

      of course! ;)

    52. 152

I would! I would! Unlike (almost) every other Twilight fan, I've loved Vampires since I was a kid. Does anyone remember that show Vampire High??

    53. 153

Yuck.Stephen King said the Mormon female author cannot write for shit anyway.

    54. 154

      NOPE, not a chance!

    55. 155

wtf???? they should made it out of twilight !!!! there is so many chapters they missed so ….the should thake twilight´s book n became it a serie!

    56. 156

totally. im addicted to anything remotely vampiric

    57. 157

      it's sounding good , but i doubt it .

    58. 158

      For sure!
If you have read both Twilight and the Vampire Diaries you will realize many similarities.
Except L.J Smith's novels are much better written.

    59. 159

I can't believe nobody has mentinoed it yet. But this lady LJ Smith is actually Stephanie Meyer. She's just writing under a pseudonym. The similiarties are endless. Anyone else notice this? And it's been discussed somewhere online. But anyway this book had some good parts in it and lots just dragged already..ugh…I think the tv series will do good though, depending on the cast and writers. And any love triangle is easy to write about first season and keep people hooked.

    60. 160

i actaully read these books. its just like the twilight series except the girl is popular and instead of a vampire vs werewolf battle its vampire brother vs vampire brother battle. kinda dumb actually. it was hard to get through. but ill watch. why not.

      161

The more, the merrier…but True Blood remains the BEST!!

    62. 162

      Hell no

    63. 163

      …..
can't they think of new stories?

    64. 164

I would totally watch this, since I was a HUGE fan of this book series back in the 90's. I think these books were totally better than 'Twilight' and if you read them, you will see how unoriginal 'Twilight' really is…

    65. 165

looks interesting. :'D i think i'll watch it.

    66. 166

      No

    67. 167

Okay so first theres Dracula, Buffy, The Little Vampire, Twilight, the Underworld then this!!! Omgosh.. I will NOT watch this. The only vampire movie I liked was Twilight. Cause Taylor Lautner who plays Jacob Black is hot!

    68. 168

That sounds dumb if you ask me. No I would not watch it. I still have yet to see Twilight but I want to. I figure it should come out on DVD one of these days- the way movies are now flowing in and out of theaters. But the whole vampire thing is a fad. This random show just seems like a copy cat.

    69. lbugg says – reply to this

      169

yawn. so tired of teen angst vampire movies.

    70. 170

Oh man, I read this series even before I knew what Twilight was…I enjoyed it. It was a cute read. I actually think I will read them again…

    71. 171

      would i watch?

      no

    72. 172

    75. 175

    76. 176

      nooooooo.
      definitely no.

    77. 177

HELL YEA on the CW…. they do horror/90210 well !!! if it was a major network would not bother. Hmmmmm a line up of Reaper and this could be fun.

    78. 178

I would watch. Oh and the first book of the series, The Awakening, was published in 1991. (The other site got it wrong.)

    79. 179

i LOVE that book! it's WAAAYYYYY better than twilight :p
      i would totally watch it!

    80. 180

      yes.
and it was published in 1991

    81. 181

I loved these books back when I read them in middle school. I really hope they cast it well, and don't depart from the books too much. I think Elena may be a challenge to cast, but I'm really rooting for a good pick for Damon!
