Twilight Director Turned Down Huge $$$$$$ Offer For Artistic Integrity

Filed under: Film Flickers > Twilight

wenn-hardwicke.jpg

In a new interview, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke says that she walked away from "more money than I [Hardwicke] or anyone in my family has ever seen" because she believed she could not remain faithful to the book and to fans under the restrictions that Summit wanted to put her under to direct the upcoming sequel, New Moon.

Turning down money in pursuit of artistic integrity?! In Hollywood?! That's crazy talk!

Twilight producers wanted to rush the sequel into production - which they are doing, and shooting begins next month. They also wanted to keep the budget at a modest figure.

Hardwicke disagreed with both of those things.

She says, "I was devastated. I really did feel a strong connection to the people around the world that liked the movie — and to Stephenie and the actors. But I just didn't think I could make a good movie under those circumstances."

New Moon was passed on to director Chris Weitz, and the film is in pre-production right now.

With Twilight proven to be such a mega-hit with the highest opening ever for a female director at $70 million, Summit might be shooting themselves in the foot.

Because if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

its not like the movie made all that money because of her directing it was because of the book.. she sucked as a director for that film it had so much potential.. well thats my opinion it could have been better so maybe this director will do a better job. they need some good special effects for the guy transforming into wolves!!!! im excited

I think she would've gotten her way if she held out longer. I'm not too upset though. I liked her, but there were parts of Twilight that could've been directed better.

Perez, ignore the people saying that this is a bad post. Many of your posts are crap, but this is actually a good one. Many of your readers are interested in Twilight. I read this on like two other sites prior to this, but still, whatevs.

    34. 34

It does not matter who directs any of the twilight movies. They are going to make money anyway. The first one made a lot of money despite being a very bad movie, from the acting, the special effects, directing and script. It's success had nothing to do with her. She is a not a very good film maker. For that matter either is Chris Weitz, but it will make a lot of money anyway. She does not have artistic intergity, she just can not handle the pressure of getting the movie done so fast. By the way your comment about "if it ani't broke dont fix it" is ridicules, if the first movie was good it would probably have made more money and been respected.

    39. 39

They could have had a monkey direct that movie and it would have made major $$$. Better yet, a monkey would have more emotional depth playing Bella than KStew.

      40

actually, it was broke. that movie sucked!

    41. 41

Im really Happy that Katherine wants time to stay true to the books but they can sooooo do that in the time summit wants!! its all in the screen play!!
Im sad to see Hardwicke go but i NEED my New Moon by the end of this year or I'll go crazyy!!!

    42. 42

New Moon is my fave. I will be devasted if this doesnt go right. I commend this chick for standing up and sticking to what she thinks is best for the film. I agree with her. To make it what it should be it needs time. I dont see the film being as amazing as it should be with out her but what can I do :-( .

    43. 43

Agree with those who say Hardwicke had nothing to do with the success, it was the book itself and Edward that made it the money. In FACT, we thought Hardwicke tried to turn it into a teen comedy of sorts. I think she was the weak link and did a huge cheer when I heard they brought Chris Weitz in. At least he knows what he's doing.

    44. 44

      fuck that

I cant wait for the new director to make New Moon good

    45. 45

It's a shame! This idiot directed American Pie! WTF, is he trying to turn this hot vampire series into some frat jock yuppie shit!!!!

    46. 46

The Movie was a huge disappointment. Hopefully, the next director will be better..

    47. 47

Now they just need a new writer for the second movie. If you love the books you know the first movie didn't even hold a flame to them!

    48. 48

LMAO! ! Walked away!? They didnt want her back because everyone knew the movie sucked….LMAO she walked away! HA HA great spin

      51

In all honesty, more directors and artists on the whole should want that kind of integrity. Because the production is being fast forwarded, I'm afraid the film will end up suffering.

    52. 52

I just know they are going to f*@k up New Moon. It's one of my favourites of the 4 books. There is too much going on in the book not to have a big budget.

    53. 53

What artistic integrity? The first film was shit and judging by their source material the next films are gonna be just as bad.

    57. 57

Well, I am glad Catherine recognized that she probably couldn't pull New Moon off. She has her specialty in indie movies, not blockbuster franchises. I think she had enough money to begin with or she wouldn't have turned down this movie. I hope Chris Weitz can make New Moon good.

    58. 58

PS… Robert Pattinson is the real reason this movie was successful and along with the love for Twilight the book.

    59. 59

      Re: tom951 – Agreed.

    62. 62

And on that pic she looks part dinosour, part slug, part frog and … what is it? … a witch peering into someone's 'shole, her face scrunched up from concentration to never forget that shiny azz … wah… lovely memories …

    63. 63

She really did screw up Twilight. I was expecting a great movie… hopefully the new director will make a good New Moon.

    64. 64

Yeah but she sucked as a director anyway and ruined the first movie so I'm just glad she is gone.

    65. 65

People didn't see the film because of her directing skills.. They saw it because they loved the books. It wouldn't matter if Gumby directed New Moon, the legion of fans of this series will go see it anyway.

    66. 66

I saw Twilight 4 times (yes, I'm just that awesome) and the first time I saw it I was like *eh* I don't know. I couldn't decide if I liked it or not especially because the movie seemed to have a more lighthearted tone than the books had. I know they cut a lot of stuff out but that was expected. The subsequent times seeing it I paid more attention to how it was shot and y'know, it was shot really well. The colors, the camera angles, the light, and the ending credits are just beautiful. The special effects… yeah that needed some work. A bigger budget, like the sequel most definitely deserves, ought to help with that. But yeah, now I'm disappointed Hardwicke didn't stay on but props for artistic integrity.

    67. 67

Re: LG Proud Devotee of The Sweet! – I will have to check those out! Thank you!

    68. 68

screw all that. the first movie made alot because of robert pattinsons sexiness, not because it was actually good. it wasn't bad but it was not great either by no means. kudos to her for being able to walk away from all that money because of what she believes in. thats great because not many especially in la la land can do that, however her vision probably wouldnt have done the sequel any favors. i'm looking forward to what the new director can bring to the table and see if he can stay true to the book and the author's vision.

      71

      i respect her for that
but i don't mind that she left
the special effects they used we not that good and Chris Weitz has done crazy special effects before in The Golden Compass with the talking Polar Bear so i dont think werewolves will be a problem for him
plus its nice to have a new director for a completly new twist on the series

    72. 72

FUCK that bitch anyway. am i supposed to feel bad for her, or respect her? she has ruined my image of that book. stupid twat.

    73. 73

Re: Leahishot – oh please, like he really made the movie with his superior oscar-worthy skills right? no one gave a shit about him when he was in harry potter. ugh fucking "tweens".

    74. 74

Artist. Hmm… that movie was mediocre at best (and I got sucked into the books and loved every minute of it). I hate to say it, because I support her as a fellow lady… but she made all that money not because of her but because what she was selling was a story that has rabid fans. I KNEW the movie wasn't going to be all that great when I saw the preview (though I didn't know HOW bad it was going to be) but I STILL had to go, because I love "Twilight"… But whatever, the point is she stood by principles she had, good for her.

    75. 75

Twilight was a disappointment. I mean whenever you make a book into a movie it's never the same, but the movie had so much more potential. I hope Chris does a better job in New Moon, and better not screw up my Italy scene. Let's face it Rob is pretty much the only reason the movie did well, definitely not Kristen Stewart's "perfect" portrayal of Bella. Catherine I think did a terrible job at directing. Some scenes of the movie look like it's a documentary. Now, she's trying to cash in on the Twilight craze with a book? Yeah, ok.

    76. 76

      Boring!

    77. 77

      Good for her!

    78. 78

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight… she was the one saying no to New Moon… and guess what? Santa Claus it's real!! YAY…

    79. 79

to me this is a load of bullshit , IF SHE HAD ARTISTIC INTEGRITY WHY THE HELL IS SHE RELEASING A BOOK WITH BEHIND THE SCENES INFO ????

SHE WAS FIRED CAUSE SHE HAD PERSONAL PROBLEMS WITH ROBERT PATTINSON , SHE MADE HIM PROMISE NOT TO TRY ANYTHING WITH KRISTEN CAUSE HER BOYFRIEND WAS HER FRIEND.

SO TO ME CH IS STILL FULL OF IT !!!

ANYWAYS IM GLAD THEY FIRED HER CAUSE SO MANY FANS FELT THE MOVIE COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER WEITZ IS GONNA DO AN EVEN BETTER JOB !!!

    80. 80

she garbage twilight with her artistic delusion. I love that book. and she destroyed it.

    81. 81

      wow. wow. wow.
cathrine hardwick is pretty sympatic. i really gonna miss her.
      she's a great director.

The folks with the money are called Producers, Catherine. You do not get an equal vote in this decision. While the rest of the world will be enjoying the sequel, you can sit at home with your "artistic integrity". Dumb move.

    83. 83

      ya huh,
      okay then.

    84. 84

      mmkthanksbye

    85. 85

I have always been an ardent admirer of Catherine Hardwicke. I especially love her movie Lords of Dogtown. That's why I like Twilight. It has a magical feeling about and I've been trying to put my finger on it. I think it's her passion for her subject. Her passion and her vision imbues her work with a whole awesome atmosphere. I just love her!
      .
I very much appreciate that Catherine, and a lot of actors who work with her, don't value commercial "success" like they do artistic fulfillment. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are two such actors.
      .
Catherine's artistic genius and non_Hollywood values makes her a super star in my eyes.

    86. 86

I hated the movie before I went in. But, presto! I decided first thing to stop comparing it to the book. I knew that Melissa Rosenberg had altered the story a bit, as screenwriters must do to squeeze an entire book into a 2-hour movie. I knew that everyone who read the book has their own vision of what the characters should look like, which parts should be included, which out left, etc. So, as I sat there grumbling something happened and suddenly I started really enjoying the movie. Instead of being disgruntled about the cast, I found them to be superb in the roles they were playing. And I loved the effects. This was a film done on a 37 million dollar budget.
      .
As far as Edward's diamond sparklely skin–ouch! Why did Stephenie write that into the story. Did she want him to look like Mineral Man?
      .
I presume New Moon will have more showy special FX ~ it should with a hugely increased budget now. I just hope that NM doesn't turn out to be like Weitz's other mediocre films: Generic Hollywood.
