Arsonist Arrested in Australian Wildfire Catastrophe

As we've mentioned a few times, the deadly fires in Victoria, Australia, have caused unimaginable damage and death down under.
Police have just arrested a individual in connection with one of the many wildfires that spread killing over 180 people.
According to the cops, the man is suspected of lighting a fire last Saturday. In a statement,
Victoria state police say he has been "charged with arson causing death, intentionally or recklessly lighting a bush fire, and possessing child pornography."
What a fucked up beast!
Two other men were arrested for "suspicious behavior" on Thursday, though they've since been released.
On a slightly positive note, the Country Fire Authority said the number of fires burning has decreased from 35 to 21 now, though "the threat will remain for weeks to come."
However, the death count may increase to over 300 as many bodies have yet to be discovered. Police inspector Peter Sheppard said "Initially it was a fairly straitforward process — bodies were in cars, on sides of roads. Now, the search is through buildings. Many have collapsed."

Why is race or religion an issue? Most of the people here in Oz caught for arson are caucasian.
It's horrendous to watch this all unfold. So far the country has raised $71 million + to help aid but the bill is expected to top $2 billion.
You ask why there is no race or religion mentioned about the arsonist… i am australian and i speak for the majority when i say that we are not a country based on why people do what they do based on race or religion. i would like to believe we take people at face value and so think there is more a problem with the individual's mindset as a singular person not as a group problem.
he can't be charged with murder because murder needs to have "intent" to kill. he probably didn't set out to kill anyone but i think he should be charged with causing death. i beileve the fire he lit killed 21 people

The Victorian countryside became a deathtrap - it was premeditated murder - he just didn't know how many victims he would end up with. These people are the lowest scum on the planet. Whole families burned to death in their cars and homes. Over a million precious animal lives lost and the human toll may rise as much as 300.

Does anyone notice how the arsonists are getting more press than the fact that the Australian authorities let their people down. For many, there was no help AND it sounds like not many plans in place for help. I would think a country so susceptible to fire would have THE BEST fire fighting plans on the planet. Yes, an arsonist should be punished but I hope someone starts speaking about how the bigwigs that run the place f*cked up big time.

Don't even start with blaming the authorities for not doing enough. They said that even if we had 500 Elvis water helicopters and 1000 water tankers, we would not have been able to put out these fires. It was a hellish, freakish force of nature (albeit some fires were deliberately lit) that for some towns, nothing would have helped them. The authorities are the people involved too and it does no one any good to blame them. This is a serious situation and it doesn't help when people are flippant and unthinking in their comments.

I forgot to mention that many of the homes devastated in the fires had been made 'fire safe' and others that were not, were left standing, so better fire plans wouldn't have mattered. There will, however, be room later for debate over how much control the conservationists over fire safety measures such as back burning and removal of trees on individual properties.
Enough rant.

A few years back your country had what you thought was a "massive" fire (which really was half the size of a fire Aus see's yearly) and you cried out for help cause your fire fighters needed help. So what did we do? Sent fire fighters. So were are your guys?

The devestation in Victoria is the worst in Australia's bushfire history, well surpassing Ash Wednesday and Black Friday combined. The pain of the faces of the people that have lost everything including loved ones is soul destroying. So far we have raised over AU$100 million, and the amount just keeps on getting higher.
**Hayleykart - the death toll as at 6pmAEST today is 189 - not 230. The authorities are expecting the figure of 230 initially.

They were trying to protect a baby! Is that population control?? Or maybe the man that was separated from the rest of his family during the evacuations, only to still not find them over the few days he was living in a camp… he was finally allowed to return to his home, and what did he find?? His family burned to death… he committed suicide on the spot! SO FUCK YOU, YOU INSENSITIVE FUCKING PRICK!

Sorry to hear. Its unbelieve how much people are doing to help. I was watchign today tonight and how one guy has many families living with him atm. But I do feel sorry for flood vicitims in QLD and bush fire victims over here in WA in the south. What help are they getting? none. Everyone is concentrating too much on the Vic people.
