Boycott Facebook! Here's Why

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooTech Talk

We're so glad we've never uploaded any of our stuff onto Facebook!

You Facebook users are SCREWED.

Did you know that everything you've loaded up into your profile (personal pictures, etc.) belongs to Facebook, even after you've closed your account?

That's what it says in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you opened your account, apparently.

The Consumerist recently uncovered this disturbing info and it's causing quite a stir.

So, what does this mean?

Basically, Facebook can do whatever the hell they want with YOUR STUFF.

And, they can do so WITHOUT your permission.

For example, they can license your personal pictures out to companies, make a shizzle of money and don't have to give you a dime.

Sounds really, really shitty and sooo shady!!!!!

  2. 2

Haha, I've never even been on Facebook.

  3. 3

FIRST!!! And that is fucked up….damn it…i spend all this time on facebook…this is bull shit…no one ever reads the terms and i guess we will have to pay because of that…privacy has now become a luxury that is slowly dying..

  4. 4

    Yup that does suck.
Just don't put any incriminating photos or information about yourself, that may one day come back to haunt you.

  5. 5

    that should be illegal!!!!1

  6. 6

agreed. Facebook is too much of an "open" book for me to want to post personal info.

  7. 7

  8. 8

    FUCK, too late.

  9. 9

    Damn! That sucks!!

  10. 10

    that is soooo shady!!

  11. 11

FaceBook sucks now anyways the new version sucks

  12. 12

  13. 13

  14. 14

    thats weird

  15. Meesh says – reply to this

shady or not, i'm still addicted

  16. LSD says – reply to this

WOW!!! That is fucked up! What about MySpace? Luckily I do not have a Facebook account.

  17. 17

    ooooooold news!

  18. 18

But what do we can we do if they already have our pics?

  19. 19

YAY I'm gonna be famous! WAIT A MINUTE…..

  20. 20

  21. 21

    thats fucked up..

    dammit im screwed :/

  22. 22

    Myspace is just as bad!

  23. 23

.. Perez…. every networking site does that.. You should really read the terms of service if you didnt know.

  24. 24

Sooo, if I want to be the President those pictures of me in the gang-bang will resurface! SHIT!

  25. 25

haha. I knew there was a reason Facebook always bothered me, and why I never wanted to use the damn thing.

  26. 26

myspace is the same way. however… you can't license pictures without model releases and property releases, so it would be pretty hard for them to do that legally. kinda like that time virgin mobile used a photo off flickr, and got sued and lost big time.

  27. 27

bull shit! im deleting mine! = ~

  28. 28

    no way!

  29. 29

shady! Facebook was so much better pre-2005 when Mark Zuckerberg still owned it and it was simple. It was just for college students, so you didn't have to censor what you were saying because everyone you communicated with was a peer rather than a family member, coworker, etc. There were no stupid fucking apps, newsfeeds, blogs. It's such a mess now. The styles of myspace and facebook should've remained distinct.

  30. 30

    I still will use it
    i live for facebook

  31. 31

    fuck facebook

  32. 32

    fuck dat!

  33. 33

  34. 34

    sigh!!!!!!!!! i love FB

  35. 35

    that's fuuuucked up

  36. 36

    that is not news?
well maybe - but ooooooold news… at least in europe, it's been debated for quite some time..

  37. 37

    whoa shit

  38. 38

and I quote "Ownership; Proprietary Rights
Except for User Content and Applications/Connect Sites, all materials, content and trademarks on the Facebook Service are the property of Facebook and/or its licensors and are protected by all relevant IP laws and other proprietary rights (including copyright, trademark, trade dress and patent laws) and any other applicable laws. Without limiting the foregoing, FACEBOOK, the F LOGO, FB, FACE, POKE, THE WALL and 32665 and all related logos, are trademarks of Facebook. Except as expressly authorized by Facebook in writing, you agree not to use, sell, license, distribute, copy, publish, stream, publicly perform or display, transmit, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works or otherwise make unauthorized use of the materials, content or trademarks."

so, no you're wrong. "except for user content" means exactly that. They own everything BUT user content and the aps. Seems about right.

  39. 39

WTH??? Can't believe that… i uploaded a bunch of pics on facebook… this is just stupid! and I hate facebook!

  40. 40

this is old news, and if you dont put stupid stuff then you have nothing to worry about.
who cares if they sell info about the books that you like to barnes n nobles?

  41. 41

    Facebook sucks. That's it.

  42. 42

This is true. Any groups formed, photos uploaded, pages created etc. are in fact the product of Facebook. Don't put anything on there that you plan on continuing off of Facebook because they can legally sue you for copyright infringement. Unbelievable.

  43. 43

Oh no!! That sucks. A few of my photographer friends post some of their work there… It would be awful if they got jerked out of the rights to their own images that they could potentially sell.

  44. 44

…no one is going to boycott facebook. and we already know this. :) xoxo

  45. 45

Every networking site does that… way to read the terms of service! How else would they get all of those realistic looking pictures of girls doing mirror shots in all of their bogus ads (like myspace) Way to be like 5 years behind on this news. You suck horribly, lately… all you care about is yourself and your fake celebrity… you should care about what got you there (and i dont mean your ass kissing to Paris), your website.

  46. 46

  47. 47

So my shit could be sold and used NOW!?
    Oh helllllllll NO!

  48. 48

Ah come on, I've known this for years.
This is why you should always read the terms before uploding.

  49. 49

I doubt facebook would get a lot of money for pictures of my drunk friends…

  50. 50

    oh my gawdd lawd jesus
    nooo D:
i have all my personal shizzle in there aghh O:

  51. 51

    what about MYSPACE???

  52. 52

    That sucks! I use facebook..

  53. 53

That's what I don't have any pictures on my FB. :P And only one of me on my MS page. MS can pimp out pictures of my cats all they want. :P

  54. 54

All you care about is MONEY. This town deserves a better class of criminal, and I'm gonna give it to them.

  55. 55

Well, think of it this way, once you post ANYthing on the net, you pretty much have given it away anyway….so….what you should be doing is boycotting shitty music like Lady Gaga or dumb celebrities who are assholes because we are funding their shopping sprees while we all die poor.

  56. 56

There is a group of law students up in Canada who are suing facebook for this and a few other reasons. Facebook doesn't keep your info private, even after you specify that you want your info to be private.

The simple truth is that people have to be very, very careful about what they put out there.

  57. 57

oh no, my display picture that i took by pointing the camera in the mirror! how dare they take that from me after i uploaded onto the internet for everybody to see anyways. now i'll never profit from my prom picture.

  58. 58

  59. T & B says – reply to this

lame dude, glad i deleted mine.

  60. 60

Oh. well they obviously use my beautiful face xx

  61. 61

What the fuck!! That sucks the big one!!

  62. 62

No one over the age of 21 should have a facebook account. Or myspace. It's just silly and immature.

  63. SJB says – reply to this

Are people still this stupid about the internet? OF course they own your shit. They gave you a profile for free to post shit on THEIR site… So guess what… what you post on THEIR site they own. People need to get an education on the internet….. Anything you post is PERMANENT and can be used any way possible. Get a clue!!! That's why I post the most random useless shit possible.

    Idiots otherwise.

  64. 64

I read through the terms just now and couldn't find the quoted material, did anyone else find it?

  65. 65

I'm closing my freaking account now!

  66. 66

    what the efff
    hell nawww
stupid ass mother effing facebook people ain t gonna steal my shit
Im a large ole black gospel woman and I will shoot those motherfuckers in the ass if they do that shit. I aint playing ill get my brothers on them they will whip some cracker ass O:

  67. 67

This isn't ANY different than myspace's policy, Perez. Do your homework more thoroughly. As for privacy, whoever actually puts super-personal stuff that they don't want others to see on facebook kinda fails, since it's a social networking site. And besides, Facebook is #1 right now. WHY would they jeopardize that to embarass/exploit their users. Seriously Perez, your uninformed opinion right now is overwhelmingly full of idiocy.

  68. 68

MySpace's TOS had this same provision years ago - don't know if they changed the wording or not. They can get away with it because no one reads the TOS or, if they do, don't understand the implication. Probably not a huge deal unless you're, say, some kind of artist or photographer and post your stuff.

  69. 69

Re: LAVibe – Apparently this was a rule change earlier this month! Is that legal? I signed up for Facebook years ago when the TOS were different.. I'm thinking CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT!

  70. 70

honestly if you upload something online, then beleive that its out there, and get over it…its the internet done expect less

  71. 71

If they think anyone will be interested in buying pictures of my boring little life, they can go ahead and try.

    Good luck!

  72. 72

Other stories are saying it's overzealous legal language and will be fixed this week because of the backlash.

  73. 73

Disturbing. Shady fuckers… they better not use pictures of my daughter or any of my family for shit… I'll go batshit crazy… TOS or not. Hmm… maybe that's why they threw such a hissy fit over the breastfeeding mom's photos? Perhaps the photos were popping up in their random ads? LOL

  74. 74

BAHAHAHA sucks to be them. That's why I'm loyal to Tom :)

  75. 75

how the fuck are we supposed to boycott facebook??????

  76. 76

Wow, get with the times Perez!! You do realize that EVERYTHING you put up on the internet is public domain? Anything you put on MySpace for example is archived by Google and MySpace..so erm…this is nothing new, you're just very behind and you obviously know very little about technology.

  77. 77

seriously.. ? but if I delete all my pictures right now? Then they can't use pictures that I've deleted?

  78. 78

is this true? because that's awful

  79. 79

Wow that sucks. I'm glad I don't have a facebook.

  80. 80

What the shizz? Oh no :S

  81. 81

i think it's hilarious that everyone is so shocked. it's written right in the terms of agreement.
at least we know now that people read the fine print before they sign on the dotted line.

  82. 82

  83. 83

WOW WHO FUCKING CARES. you should know whatever you put online can effect you no matter what. i dont fucking care. what are they gonna do with my pictures. NOTHING STFU PEREZ YOU FUCKFACE,

  84. 84

MyRe: kaaaatieyeah – Myspace does that too.

  85. 85

If you're dumb enough to put photos on facebook you don't want seen all over the internet then you deserve whatever you get.

  86. 86

umm so they CAN do this..
but have they ever??? what a dumb post..

  87. 87

So…what do they want to do with my drunken ass pictures?
same goes for youtube by the way

  88. 88

    Wow. That's really horrible.
Can't really boycott since I've already signed up.

  89. DH says – reply to this

Yeah, I knew about this before I made my account but I don't think I cared enough to really give a damn…I'm sure I'll be thinking differently when and if they ever decide to use one of my photos..

    Oh well!

  90. 90

    um…a slow gossip day P-Nasty?

i am more than certain Facebook
is not in a panic over your "expose'" of their FAQ

on the brighter side, you let up on chris brown and rihanna

chris brown may be an "ass"

    but you P-Nasty are the hole - ( ((0)) )

  91. 91

Kinda funny to hear gripes about personal photos when all this site does is use photos of people anyway they wish.

  92. 92

This isn't news. Facebook users have known this since forever.

  93. 93

simple… delete it all before closing. There ya go, Brainiac.

  94. 94

  95. 95

Besides, this is just a clause to protect themselves. They have no desire to take most ugly fugs with them to their homes… it's legal talk. who fucking cares?

  96. 96

Hmm and those commericals (e.g. cell phone companies) telling u how great your precious pics can be instantly transferred back to face book -should re-think their entire marketing campaigns - since they'll be considered joint when the class actions come knocking.

  97. 97

    Wow… didn't know. Thanks Perez.

  98. 98

GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK! do you people really believe this shit? I guess everyone and thier mom, and their dad, and their grandma are screwed because the whole world has a facebook

  99. 99

    Fuck facebook!!!!! goddamn you…

  100. 100

WTF! That´s old news… Was on the news about 1 1/2 year ago or maybe ppl in the state are so after. :)
