Facebook Still Sucks
On Monday, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg responded to everyone freaking out about the social networking site's its effed-up new policy - "what you upload onto Facebook belongs to Facebook."
Zuckerberg responded in a really shitty, weak way. You can read his entire statement here.
Why was it shitty?
It's crap because he doesn't explain why they have to 'own' and keep YOUR personal photos even after you've shut down your profile.
Zuckerberg says you can 'trust' him. Don't worry, you supposedly have his 'word' that they wouldn't do anything you wouldn't want them to do:
In reality, we wouldn't share your information in a way you wouldn't want. The trust you place in us as a safe place to share information is the most important part of what makes Facebook work. Our goal is to build great products and to communicate clearly to help people share more information in this trusted environment.
When push comes to shove, or if there's money to be made, do you really think a corporation would have your best interest at heart?

thats very frightening. i cant think of any reason for that policy that could be good natured. he knows that every college student of this generation has a facebook. by logging all of the pictures, as our generation starts to distinguish itself, facebook could make a lot of money by revealing pictures from this era. think future politicians, high profile court cases, anyone who achieves any level of success now needs to worry about what was on facebook even after they deleted it.

I have both Facebook and Myspace but I'm always on Myspace. Facebook just doesn't understand the meaning of privacy. My profile is private on Facebook yet any time someone friend requests me….they can see my entire profile. I just think it's ridiculous.
Plus Facebook is just way too cluttered and it's boring.

I tired the Facebook hoopla and it sucked so I'm really glad I never bothered with that crap. It was just so boring and dumb so I'm stuck with MySpace.

The whole point of the policy is to ensure that you can't sue Facebook if someone you don't want to see your pictures ends up seeing them through another person's tagged pictures. Facebook doesn't give a shit what your pictures are. Do you honestly think they take the time to go through all the millions of pictures people put up?

MySpace is LOADED with viruses and a lot of the applications just freeze the computer. While I enjoy MySpace graphics and other aspects much better than Facebook, having to re-install everything on my computer three times is enough for me to stay away from MYSPACE

The fact of the matter is that Facebook has every right to use any photo that you upload to their site. It's free for users, and Facebook is paying for the hosting, THEY are paying for the bandwidth… not the user. If you were paying for it - you should be able to expect some level of privacy. HOWEVER - what they used it a 100% typical and standard terms of service. Flickr, Photobucket… any other image hosting website is going to claim all standard right to any image you give them.
If you read your own terms of service you'll see, you probably have the same clause. If someone emails you a photo that they took, it becomes your property, to use and distribute as you see fit. It's totally standard. Stop bashing Facebook. You can't decide you don't like something until you've tried it for yourself.

And while certainly Perez has a point accusing the lack of respect and privacy facebook shows towards their users, that doesn't mean we should believe him BLINDLY. Ater all, MYSPACE is also shitty but he praises it like it is pure joy. And no fucking way. God only knows how much money he's getting to talk bullshit about Facebook.
And it's true that you can't upload anything without having the risk someone else take it and use it like it's their property. that's true. That you should be careful with what you upload, true also. But that doesn't mean they should have "carte blanche" to use YOUR stuff as if it was theirs. They have NO right to do that.

Mario, you are a hypocrite. When Vanessa Hudgens sends a racy picture to a friend, and they decide to spread it all over the internet as if they owned the rights to it, you have no problem helping them by posting it on your site. Now you go after Facebook, who tells you up front that they are going to do what they please with what you send them. Fact check: Facebook (and many other sites) have this policy… you use their service for free, so whatever you put on it, you give them the rights to reuse as they see fit. It's a really simple agreement, and it has actually helped the Internet thrive for many years now — much longer than your site has been around, in fact.
Myspace sucks!! Why do people cryn about it?? I don't get it.. if it's such a huge problem for some people, they should have read the terms and conditions… I personally don't give a shit if they own my pictures!?
There is a very simple solution…
If you want to delete your facebook account, delete all of your pictures, information, etc first. Then, wait a week for their back-up system to recycle, and only then should you delete your account. It's not a cure-all, but it's a start.
And as for trusting Mark Zuckerberg, NFW!!!
