The Oscars Are Hurting For $$$$$

The recession is even hitting the Oscars!

After historically low ratings for last year's telecast, the sponsors are not backing the awards show the way they have in years previous. In fact, the Oscars and ABC are only expected to bring in $68 million dollars from advertisements this year, which is a dramatic drop from last year's $81.8 million!

ABC cut their advertising costs by 18%, but as Jon Swallen at TNS Media Intelligence explains, "The fact is that advertisers are really taking a long look at how they’re investing their marketing dollars, and discount or no, this is still a lot of money. Even a reduced price tag is still a barrier to entry.”

Cosmetic giants L’Oréal Paris have decided not to advertise in the 2009 awards, which is a $22 million loss for ABC.

The reason for their absence?

Not advertising costs! It's the wrong target audience!!

The 18-49 year old age bracket's viewership went dramatically down in last year's awards, 24% less than the 2007 awards.

"A lot of cosmetics companies reach out to younger women, and those viewers are leaving in droves,” explains Shari Anne Brill of ad agency, Carat.

The Oscar's median age is 49.5 years old!! Yikes!

The legendary awards better figure out a way to appeal to a younger audience ASAP before they go under!!

    2. 2

No wonder, the Oscars is just an excuse for a bunch of rich people to get together and pat themselves on the back for a lot of bullshit movies that nobody has heard of.

    3. 3

      Whaaa.

    4. 4

      YEY!!! FIRST AGAIN

    6. 6

People just don't give a fuck anymore.

    7. 7

there's not enough sex nor drama for someone as young as me to care ….

    8. 8

THE OSCAR SHOW IS A HUGE BORE!

    9. 9

their problem is, the movies that get nominated are often boring and contrite. The younger audience doesn't watch the movies, so therefore, don't care. A younger audience probably watches the Golden Globes more, and that's only because of the TV shows nominated.

they should hand out comedy awards also… just because it's comedy doesn't mean it isn't acting…

You know that's what they get for the Batman:First Knight snub.

    13. 13

Everyone is hurting so who cares about some boring awards show that is nothing more than one big commercial for the movie bizz.

    14. 14

      Re: skinny bitch

worst site i've ever seen and advertisers must think so too.. YOU HAVE NONE!

    15. 15

They need to stop being so phony. Rigged and obvious! Make it real and they will come! LOL!

    16. 16

Maybe now that Rob Pattinson is going to be there Loreal will want back in! I know several people in the right demo are going to be watching because of him.

    17. 17

Only $68 million? My heart bleeds for them!

      The rich getting richer!

    18. 18

so is that why robert pattison is presenting? to bring in the teen girls!! well it will definately work!

    19. 19

makes perfect sense because veryone knows that once you turn 40 you don't buy anything.

    20. 20

haha shame for the oscars. No one watches it just go on the net and you'll see who won… if you really care

    21. 21

And women over 49 don't dye their hair or use cosmetics???

    22. 22

I'm only going to watch if the rumors are true, and Rob Pattinson is going to be there…….

      :)

      Re: lovernotahater – Exactly.

If L'Oreal leaves because the average viewer is 50 years old, why doesn't AARP fill the gap? Or better yet, car companies? Surely some guy with a midlife crisis will respond to an ad for the newest sportscar.

    24. 24

How about nominating real talent!!!! The nominees this year are horrible!!
They ignored the tremendous 'elephant' in the room..The Dark Knight, Chris Nolan, Bale and Ekhart, and HANS ZIMMER!! WTF???
Way to go Academy….you deserve the losses now. You've made yourself irrelevant.

    25. 25

They're going to hurt even worse this year since they decided to snub one of the best films in years, The Dark Knight. I guess all the jews in control just couldn't stand to see something about them go unnoticed, no matter how bad it sucked (The Reader).

    26. 26

Yeah award shows are boring as hell. If I watch at all, I only watch the pre-show just to see what all the celebs are wearing.

    27. 27

Awww. ONLY 68 million. I feel you but I can't quite reach you. I know….
cut down on the gratuitous and excessive celebrity grab bags, or are they donated. Just like the grossly overpaid pro athletes, this actor and industry insider look-at-me love fest has always been ridiculous in its over funded grandeur and self importance. Perhaps now it will go back to being about the craft of acting rather than a celebrity rating and numbers for profit game. As far as I'm concerned, along with many others, this would be a noted improvement. Big deal. Scale down. Accept the nice recognition, smile and go home. It's supposed to be about honoring skilled, superb and moving performance. Honoring that could be free. Imagine if there were no cameras there. What WOULD happen to all the $elf-promotion?

Only houses, condos, vacations, and 100k cars. DUH!

    30. 30

Maybe if they got voters who actually voted for stuff people like instead of using it as a platform to pat their friends on the back for work no one has seen or cares about. The Dark Knight shoulda got a nom for best picture.

    31. 31

so sad! the one award show worth watching is actually having difficulty with their ratings of viewers. come on people! dont justify the belief that "you have to be older to know better…" wow..49.5 years old! do we really need something "shiny" to be interested or entertained…although i do admit it helps..it makes sense in the grammys but the oscars definitely has a wider range of age thats needs considering..but im 21 n im lookiing forward to it! go watch it!!

    32. 32

Who gives a shit?? I will not be watching the Oscars after this year's travesty of Leonardo DiCaprio not being nominated for his amazing performance in "Revolutionary Road." The Oscars MIGHT be able to salvage a shred of credibility if they finally pull their head out of their collective ass and give Kate Winslet her long overdue Oscar for "The Reader"! Fuck Whorealina and ArmPitt- another reason not to watch, every other camera shot will of those pretentious assholes sitting in the front row hamming it up. Hopefully both will go home empty-handed.

    33. 33

Who cares about the Oscars anyway? Let's see we are giving recognition to actors, people who act. All actors must be very proud of themselves and their accomplishments. Way to go, pat yourselves on the back, you deserve it.

    34. 34

Why don't THEY get it WE DO, were tired of watching these overpaid fools pat each other on the back. They live like royalty yet tell us we are destroying the world because we don't walk the 10 miles to work. Of course it is okay for them to use jets that gobble up 10,000 gallons of fuel an hour to get to Gay Gary's Fashion Show (they are special you know) the movies today stink either non stop chaos or remakes of remakes. they deserve to be shut down they do not provide true entertainment to the public as they once did? Do they?

    35. 35

does that oscar just look like some kind of a gay boys dildo?

    36. 36

I'm not totally sure on this, but people are probably a little too busy looking for jobs and scrimping and saving so that they don't lose their houses to watch a bunch of spoiled rich brats in $5000 dresses.
