Vanity Fair Doesn't Like Dark Skinned People

WTF, Vanity Fair?

As far as we're concerned, dark is lovely, but the mag doesn't appear to see it that way!

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto appears in Vanity Fair's March issue A LOT lighter than she is in real life, and it's pissed off a lot of people!

Why did they have to give Freida the whitewash treatment like Beyonce got compliments of L'Oreal ?

We don't know because Vanity Fair has refused to answer questions about the whitewashing.

We think a natural, un-whitewashed Freida is fine as is!

    What the fuck ever.

  2. 2

No kidding, I saw that shot and didn't recognize her. I thought she was a hot Jewess or something. How very Imitation of Life, Vanity Fairies!

  3. 3

Our differences make us beautiful. This is really lame… or maybe its the lighting ???

  4. 4

PEREZ PLEASE SHUT DA FUCK UP

  5. 5

WTF! She looks like a completely different person!

  6. 6

she's beautiful the way she is

  7. 7

    Interesting!

  8. 8

Shes under a huge white light, moron, and shes in a bikini and her body isnt gonna be as tanned as her face.
You cant just say shit like that

  9. 9

That is absolutely ridiculous. The idea of airbrushing disgusts me. Just people how they are, so we can relate to them. Instead, they try to idealize celebrities so that we can be in awe of them and think they're better than us… but they are not, they are human just like you and me.

  10. 10

They always do that and it is annoying.

  11. 11

    Perhaps she requested it herself.
I dunno, but after living in India for three years, I was pretty surprised to learn that Indians themselves discriminate each other on the basis of their color. That's why you find VERY few dark-skinned Indian movie stars.
Somehow, I find it very hard to believe it's all Vanity Fair. Management, perhaps? Showing her with lighter skin would definitely make her more beautiful -in most Indian eyes…

Wrong, wrong, wrong, if you ask me…

  12. 12

They do that to EVERYONE, even white people. I'm sure everyone saw the nude picture of Heidi Klum. Did she see how they lightened her? She's not that white in real life. I saw that same thing with Kate Hudson on a recent magazine cover; she was as white as snow. They lighten everyone's skin color!

  13. 13

OMG PEREZ!!! I said the same thing, she is overly-white-washed out, she look WHITE like KATY PERRY.. She is much better looking with normal south asian skin, not white skin. Its so obvious they want to market the magazine to white people. Thats why ethnic minorities are discriminated in the entertainment industry, everythings always targeted at white people.

Yes, white people are discriminated too, not just minorities, positive discrimination in the workplace is WRONG too

    NO TO RACISM!!

  14. 14

shes portraying a pin up girl. pin up girls were white. end of story

  15. 15

WOW!That's fucking hilarious!I canceled my subscription because I could not stand all their patronizing P.C. bullshit and now i find out they are most racist mag out there!Well done douche bags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. 16

You know while RETOUCHING a photo they can change her pigmentation from dark to light and vice versa, Therefore; they obviously do have issues w/ people of color.

  17. 17

Gosh, Perezito if you don't know photoshop don't talk about it please. The photo has been treated to make it look like black and white picture and then recolored. Look how red is the bra and the globe. Also the lighting they use was intentional. I bet that's not the only picture they printed of her so people that knows her get it. If she went all Michael Jackson in real life then you have all the right to freak out, other than that this is just an attempt to emulate Betty Page, that's it. Get over it.

  18. 18

i didn't know it was her when i seen it!

  19. 19

That's right: that's why they've got a black president (sorry, white / African American) on their front cover for February.

For someone who recently referred to a black man as a 'shit stain' I hardly think you can call out a magazine on racism …

  20. 20

It just goes to show you can't be too careful.

  21. 21

I LOVE THE FACT THAT SHE ALWAYS SMILES.

  22. 22

    i didnt even recognize her

  23. 23

Re: XTinkerbellX – and in the other picture she is under MORE white lights and she's way darker and her body IS as tan as her face.. so your "big white light" theory doesn't make sense.

  24. 24

    Wow what assholes.

  25. 25

It's probably the lightning and the sofning they did when they airbrushed her…

  26. 26

i also didn't recognize her until i read the bit piece. i'm writing vanity fair a letter, i don't appreciate the message they're sending out.

  27. 27

Couldn't possibly be the lighting, could it?

  28. 28

Compare the one from the right to the one on the left. you make the decision. Personally I think she looks beautiful on the right one. But if she wanted to be in Vanity, then that is fine, whatever makes her sleep at night :)

  29. 29

They did this to Nelly Furtado too, there's a line in her song that goes: "Paint my face in your magazine. Make it look whiter than it seems."

  30. 30

Who cares. It doesn't matter what the skin colour is. If they wanted to change it, they can. It's their magazine, not yours.

  31. 31

You are ridiculous. In both cases you are comparing very poorly lit, red carpet photographs, taken with harsh front flash. In each of the other situations you are dealing with much better, diffused studio lighting. I could take a photograph of you in your house with a flash and you would look really pale, but if we went outside and didn't use a flash and just used natural light, voila! you would look dark. It's common sense. As a photographer, light is used to hide imperfections or to make the skin appear smoother…without photoshop. An overexposed headshot will make the skin look more flawless and also lighten the skin. Overexposing a shot is not lightening skin. It just looks better in each of the lighting situations presented. (light colored backdrops with an "air"-ey feeling)

  32. 32

    Mmmmm, maybe is the LIGHTNING!!!
Freida looks so happy all the time. Good for her!

  33. 33

    I second that Perez.

    BROWN IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

    La Coacha from ChismeTime.com

  34. 34

Freida is so gorgeous.. They shouldn't have to do much airbrushing on her. For real.

  35. 35

    Re: Mike_Rotch
Lol, my big white light theory!! haha
There is a white beam directly over her head, shes on the red carpet in the other picture.
But whatever, its an airbrushed photo from really far away. Its hardly a "racist photo"

  36. 36

her skin tone is the least of concerns; what sucks is that she stars in a movie that is likely to win several oscars, including movie of year, and yet she is been made into the latest "vanity girl", VF's monthly showcase of B-list hollywood skanks…

    come on!

  37. 37

Umm hardly. She is hardly even dark skinned, she's tan but still fairly light naturally. She is under a HUGE light for the photo shoot. I think you're making something out of nothing, this is nowhere near the Beyonce debacle.

  38. 38

White will always be prettier than black. Blonde will always be prettier than brunette. Blue eyes will usually be favored over brown. These are the sad truths that society has set out for us. IF we don't start realizing that dark, black, brown etc can be JUST as beautiful, then in the future, being darker will be as bad as being FAT in societies eyes. That would really SUCK.

  39. 39

Shes so beautiful….why would they edit her like that?! ITS SICK - AMERICA IS SO RACIST Y'ALL

  40. 40

Just want to add that this is especially true of HAIR. Any celebrity that started off brunette has gone at least to very light brown. PATHETIC.

  41. 41

Re: DEZMOND DICKERSONRe: stars101 – i agree, but at the same time i think it's the lightening which btw isn't flattering to her anyway,

  42. 42

Interesting indeed. Especially on an issue that has Barack Obama on its cover. I hope those damn editors are reading this.
VANITY FAIR has not had a black person on its cover since Chris Rock several years back!!! (Those stupid Hollywood or music issues where they put a bunch of people on their covers don't count!!!)

  43. 43

Re: realtimez – well i agree with you and sadly it's true but seriously are there even any more white people on earth? everyone goes tanning its like attack of the orange creamicles people lol oh i bet in one hundred years people are going to look back on our time period and ask themselves "what were those people thinking back then? their fashion/beauty standards were really fucked up"

  44. 44

There's no chance that umm…the lights used during the pics washed her out a bit…any at all?

  45. elo says – reply to this

    45

    Perez, your racism is transparent.

  46. 46

    I entirely agree.
    WTF was Vanity Fair
    thinking.

  47. 47

What the fuck?? She is so beautiful without any make up, I saw the movie and she is stunning!

Vanity Fair, this is fucked up!

  48. 48

Please! They od it to everyone! I remember seeing mileys and she loked like a ghost. Like.. I know she's not super tam or anything, but she wasn't THAT pale! I don't get the white-washing either but it's really kinda sickening!

  49. 49

Re: realtimez – Blondes are dumbasses…i think any hair colour is better than blonde

  50. 50

they made her look like a fucking white playboy bitch when shes beautifully exotic n oriental

  51. 51

It's the lighting a lot of east indian girls are very light

  52. 52

    she's gorgeous just as herself.

  53. 53

sorry but that image on the right had its brightness lowered a bit.
while I do agree, her skin does look a bit brighter on the vanity fair cover compared to her actual skin tone, its not AS drastic as comparing the two above photos.
I personally just think people are way too sensitive about this stuff!

  54. 54

    She looks better dark.

  55. sonia says – reply to this

    55

this sucks… and is brutal…she is gorgeous!

  56. 56

they made her look like a pin-up girl when she's a GORGEOUS, sweet, cultured lady. i hate vanity fair that haven't been in the good luck department these days…they're just jealous of the woman's natural beauty

  57. 57

i've noticed 'the economist' magazine tends to make obama look darker than he is. whether people are lightened or darkened, it's offensive.

  58. 58

dark/tanned skin is alot better than being white… who dosen't wanna be dark?

    fu Vanity Fair

  59. 59

Vanity Fair Doesn't Like Dark Skinned People??? IT SEEMS AS IF AT LEAST, NOT THE AFFYKAN KIND??

  60. 60

LOL —- Freida Pinto — Isn't that some kind of BEAN?

  61. 61

THIS HAS BEEN HAPENNING FOR YEARS!
whenever someone of a different race gets on a predominantly white magazine, they proceed to "whiten them up" which is no new news, i remember over here there was a cover of RiRi on bliss magazine , and she was unrecognisable! its wrong and disgusting!, but its only just being recognised! but nothing will be done about it!

  62. 62

WTF. Brown and Black is BEAUTIFUL. Even white people tan for hours to get darker. WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT FOR GODS SAKE! People need to get with the program.

  63. slgee says – reply to this

    63

    It's probably the lighting.

  64. slgee says – reply to this

    64

    Re: apw322
    Truth.

  65. 65

ugh! She's way hotter before they fixed the pic.

  66. 66

Is it so terrible that SOMEONE likes fair skin? For fuck's sake, it seems like there's so much pressure to be tan. One magazine lightens people's skin and it's scrutinized. If it made people look more tan, nobody would have a problem with it.

  67. 67

That's awful, she's so pretty naturally!

  68. 68

    Re: bellaa

    Actually he's half caste. TWAT

Way to go P. Always ready to throw the race debate in if the blog's looking lame.

  69. VGirl says – reply to this

    69

IT is soooooooooooo stupid !!!! WTF?? like we can't see she is darker? gosh SO stupid why can she look darker????????? I don't get it! but still is a beautiful picture of her (minus the whiteness)

  70. 70

They obviously made her look more Latina because that is more popular than being Indian. She is the one who should be doing the complaining.

  71. 71

ok maybe they airbrushed her a bit, but 1) the picture on the right has her looking darker than she really is (did you see slumdog? she's pretty fair-skinned) and 2) in india, lighter skin is considered more attractive, so I wouldn't be surprised if SHE asked them to lighten her a bit.

  72. 72

    SHE'S BEAUTIFUL.
& thats why i dont buy vanity fair.

  73. 73

freida pinto is gorgeous and should appear as is
if i was her i would be insulted

  74. 74

pale on nonwhite people is weird. some white people cant even rock pale. but miss dita can always rock the pale and look stunning. give her back her rightful color! bitches

  75. 75

Freida looks much better with her beautiful, natural skin tone.
The lighting (or white wash) makes her less exotic.
Shame on Vanity Fair if they photoshopped her skin color!

  76. 76

So what! BET doesn't like light skinned people.

  77. 77

Freida Pinto is part Portuguese from Kerala India which used to be a Portuguese colony. The name Pinto is Portuguese. That explains her lighter skin.

  78. 78

Um…have you seen the hot lighting on her?
    .
For fuck sakes with that kind of lighting Will Smith would look white.
    .
Not everything is a race war.

  79. 79

    It's the lighting guys, relax!

  80. 80

who cares? she'll be gone after the Oscars anyway.

  81. 81

Do you people know my cousin chatta? Chatta fuck up!!!!! LOL

  82. TRuTH says – reply to this

    82

anyone ever heard of makeup and LIGHTING????

    jesus christ.

  83. 83

"Paint my face in your magazines
Make it look whiter than it seems" nelly furtado
    pissed her off too

  84. brans says – reply to this

    84

I THINK SHE IS WAY PRETTIER WITH HER NORMAL SKIN COLOR. SHE LOOKS SO HEALTHY AND WARM AS HERSELF. ONE OF THE PRETTIEST GIRLS I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.

  85. 85

It's called LIGHTING issues… when you have these tired ass lighting experts that are accustomed to filming lily white women, they have no clue how to adjust for women who are of color… There's been serveral times when people have taken photo's of me and I look much lighter in some and much darker in others… I definitely KNOW that Loreal didn't whitewash beyonce… it's the way her complexion photographs, it's not going to be consistent. Halle Berry over the years has been different shades of brown in her movies. There's a lot more real news to be concerned with…

  86. 86

I THINK SHE IS GORGEOUS REGARDLESS. I DON'T THINK THIS IS A REACE ISSUE… THAT 40'S LOOK MAY NOT HAVE WORKED WITH A DARK TAN… WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE SO DRAMATIC?.. IT WAS THE ARTISTS CHOICE.

  87. 87

I THINK SHE IS GORGEOUS REGARDLESS. I DON'T THINK THIS IS A RACE ISSUE… THAT 40'S LOOK MAY NOT HAVE WORKED WITH A DARK TAN… WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE SO DRAMATIC?.. IT WAS THE ARTISTS CHOICE.

  88. 88

Did she approve of the pics? If so, who the fuck cares.

  89. 89

    looks like lighting to me….

  90. 90

    She looks hot in both!!!
    Stop being dramatic

  91. 91

(although I did think it was two different people when I first looked at them)

  92. 92

Hey - if you act white, you may as well look white.

  93. 93

    they're idiots she looks beautiful
    the way she is.

  94. 94

shes a beautiful girl. it could just be different lighting though, the whole picture is lighter/brighter on the left

  95. 95

to be quite honest they knew she was asian when they booked her so i dont see why theyd ask her to be in their magazine if they were racist or whatever

  96. 96

thanks for finding a story where there is none.
