1996 Is Rolling Over In Its Grave!

We never thought we'd see this collaboration, but…

James Iha formerly of the Smashing Pumpkins, Taylor Hanson from Hanson, Fountains Of Wayne bassist Adam Schelsinger and Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos have joined together to form a new "supergroup."

The new group's name is Tinted Windows.

Smashing Pumpkins and Hanson, can U believe it???

What will that even sound like????

The band's official debut will be on March 20th at Pangaea in Austin, TX, as part of the the SXSW music festival and their first album is completed and set to be released in the spring.

We might have to check out their SXSW show - just for shits and giggles.

WHO?? They will have a reality show on VH1 very soon!

  2. 2

  3. 3

James Iha, wasn't he a big old smack hound?

  4. 4

Re: BBBoricua loves Angels & Demons… – Perez is only going for Hanson.

  5. 5

I wouldn't exactly call that a 'supergroup'. crap plus crap plus crap plus crap still equals crap - not a supergroup.

  6. 6

  7. 7

Someone give me a dime bag-stat! This is too freaky.

  8. 8

Holy crap! That's random and I love it!

  9. 9

They all met each other in the unemployment line.

  10. 10

    Wow, agreed.. WEIRD combination.

  11. 11

I am having my smashing pumpkins tattoo peeled off my skin…. TERRIBLE!!!

  12. 12

James, I love you, and now I just want to fucking die. Taylor Hanson? Please tell me this is a joke. A huge moronic joke.

  13. 13

Supergroup? crap + crap + crap + crap = crap - does not equal supergroup.

  14. 14

i didn't even know hanson were over

  15. 15

  16. 16

YES!!!! TAYLOR HANSON!!!! I will always be a fan….

    Re: M*I*A*R – sure was!!

  19. 19

    A) Hanson is 1997.. not 1996

    B) These are all very talented musicians with very different styles and together could produce something very interesting.

  20. 20

WHAAAAAAT?!?!?! I am so intrigued…. and confused.

  21. 21

WOW Im really happy for Taylor

  22. 22

I think I'll put a wait on the bashing until I've actually heard their music. Never know, it could be good.

  23. 23

I love Fountains of Wayne and James Iha is cool. Never a Hanson fan but at least they wrote their own music and played their own instruments.

  24. 24

Crazy. I'm interested, but it will be weird. I'm a Hanson fan, it will be weird to see Taylor in a different environment… weird stuff!!! Not so sure I'll be a fan…

  25. 25

"Why" what is the big deal !? Why not they all like playing and they have talent. It may not be for everyone but let them have fun.

  26. 26

Anyone who knows anything about indie pop appreciates James Iha's solo contributions, knows that everything Adam Schlesinger touches turns to pop-gold, and completely respects Cheap Trick. People don't respect Hanson's music due to the pop idol factor, but there is some really good music there, particularly in the later years. This is an exciting development & some good music has likely been made. Looking forward to seeing them in New York.

  27. 27

All are talented musicians-could actually be good!

  28. 28

I think the music industry is desperate to jump start the rock genre again. When Fall Out Boy and Avril are rock's top acts……..it's pretty much in the shitter.

  29. 29

Hanson can buy and sell the Jonas Brothers as far as talent goes.

Before you slag them, listen to Underneath and then get back to me.

  30. 30

Sure it will sound better than Lady gag gag and techno Brit Brit…techno and disco were the days the music died.

  31. 31

WTF!????????? LOL….im still proud to be a pumpkins fan, fuck all the haters

  32. 32

I like Fountains of Wayne, LOVE (old) Smashing Pumpkins, and remember staring lovingly at Hanson like girls do to the Jonas Brothers now.

I may actually check this shit out

I remember thinking James Iha was hot

  33. 33

    Re: Herbert West – AGREED!

  34. 34

Nothing sadder than an oriental with blond hair.

  35. 35

I LOVE YOU JAMES! (change your sexual orientation, and make sure hanson doesnt make you lose any street cred) x

  36. 36

Re: AmbrosiaRose – Nothing sadder than someone being critical of someone else when he or she has done nothing with their life in comparison to who they're criticizing

  37. 37

Seriously Perez, have you listened to Hanson lately? Pretty sure it's been almost 12 years since they hit it big, and they have grown up. So has their music. They aren't bubble gum pop anymore. They have always been talented, but they have finally come into their own and are in their prime right now. But most people wouldn't know that because they can't get past "MMMBop" and are too lazy to see what they've actually done in the past 10 years. If you haven't listened any of their music after Middle of Nowhere, you have no right to talk shit about them. Ok…now that I'm off my soapbox…I'm actually really excited about this collaboration and think it will turn out amazing.

  38. 38

    EXCELLENT post heyYallz. (#37)

    Spot on and perfectly stated.

Hanson has made some pretty top shelf music the last number of years. They went from a teenie bopper craze to legitimate musicians who write and perform their own stuff (and do it well too).

It's a long way from mmm-bop. Too bad people are quick to judge them. If they gave Hanson a listen nowadays, they'd be pleasantly surprised.
Criticizing them presently is just embarrassing for the critic.

  39. 39

I feel strangely compelled to buy this album.

  40. 40

Hanson at the House of Blues Anaheim, November 2008 — best good-ol-fashioned honest american rock show I've ever been to. And their last two albums ("Underneath" and "The Walk") are so good that I don't even think about the first two any more.

Seriously. This is sad news IMO because it means that Taylor's taking time to do a solo project and Zak is probably sitting on an All-Things-Must-Pass quantity of his own songs as well, and god knows what Isaac has got cooking up (seems he's matured into a very competent memphis-soul style singer with a dark, powerful set of pipes. Who knew?).

In other words, if this supergrouper thing breaks up Hanson I'm going to be puh-hiss-hiss-hissed off, because they seem like they're poised to bust out big any day now.

And yeah, I loves me some Fountains O' Wayne. Can we get Brendan Benson and Andy Sturmer in on this as well?

  41. 41

    MMMBop you with a smile,
tick a ta ba do ba like you want me to
tick a ta ba little child
tick a ta ba is such a part of you
    ooo The years burn
You Know you can but you dont know
    Which flowers gonna grow
What's a boy supposed to do?

  42. 42

anything with BUN E CARLOS in it is going to be huge, he's awesome

  43. SuzyP says – reply to this

Chill Perez, the boys from Hanson are actually really good musicians…

  44. 44

It's confusing and yet… very intriguing. Hopefully with all those different styles form something original.

  45. 45

OMG I am still madly in LOVE with Hanson after all these years! LOL! I cannot believe Taylor is in a band with them! I thought he would NEVER leave Hanson! This is crazy! lol

  46. 46

OH my gosh, I'm so excited!! I've been a Hanson fan since '97, and I have always hoped Taylor would break out and do his own thing. He has always seemed to me to have the most talent and best voice out of the group. YES!! Thanks for posting the news, Perez, and it's always a treat to see some Hanson coverage on here! ;)

  47. 47

I'm making a prediction…they will ROCK! Good for them…everyone needs some new variety in their lives. Hey now, back in the day people actually got down to MMMbop and Hanson was more talented than the Jonas Brothers, just more fruity.

  48. 48

    Hanson is '97

  49. 49

  50. 50

HOLY SHIT! Haha, if you listen to any new Hanson album youll know that theyre definitley more like the smashing pumpkins than the mmmbop song.

    Ive been a fan forevvver.

And it should be 1997, but thanks. WOOP WOOP this made my niiight, perez.

  51. 51

That is my generation so I can't fucken believe it!
If you were around back in the day you'd get this.

  52. 52

WOW! As a Smashing Pumpkins fan I'm speechless.

  53. 53

I'm looking forward to hearing what they've come up with.

  54. 54

Cheap Trick is amazing. Always have been, always will be. It's sad people have never given them the credit that they deserve.

  55. 55

    This could be cool…

  56. 56

I don't think these four clowns qualify as a "supergroup". I remember the days when a "supergroup" really WAS "super" (sigh).

  57. 57

Taylor Hanson ftw! I effing love that guy! Do you all know that practically everyone who is successful in the music business has been close friends with Hanson for years? No sh! Billy Corgan at a Hanson concert HOB Chicago 2004. BECAUSE HE LIKES HANSON and didn't need any other answer

  58. 58

Wow, in this pic Taylor looks like the son Kurt Cobain never had. Or did he……

  59. 59

NO! James Iha and the rest of the Pumpkins should get back together and produce another Mellon Collie.

  60. tgunl says – reply to this

Cheap Trick is great in any year! Try these albums, to name just a few
    1970s- Cheap Trick
    1980s- All Shook Up
    1990s- Sex, America, Cheap Trick
    2000s- RockFord

  61. 61

    it's gonna be awesome…i'm sure!!!!

  62. 62

    Oh lordy… what a combo!

  63. MomV4 says – reply to this

I am PSYCHED, because that drummer is ONE OF THE BEST IN ROCK AND
    ROLL!!!! Woooo-hoooo. xo

  64. 64

That is just so fucking wrong.

  65. 65

AWWWW please don't tell me this is the end of Hanson!! Have loved them since 1997, can't believe Tay's branching out into his own thing :( But people here are right, listen to "Underneath" the whole album, the lyrics are AMAZING and "The Walk" too. Hanson have come a long long way from MMMBop. Just wish more people would appreciate it! YAY HANSON FOREVER!!! This collboration could be interesting…

  66. 66

haha weird, Taylor Hanson, I met him once a couple of years ago, so fucking hot

  67. 67

I want to listen to this whirlpool of crazyness! And yes, Hanson is 97 not 96.

  68. 68

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly Hanson is one of the greatest bands of all time (no MmmBop… mmmbop is a joke) but if you listen to their more recent cd's: This Time Around, Underneath, The Walk - honestly they're amazing. I am, for one, SOOOOO excited about this collaberation. I love all bands- Hanson being my favorite band of all!!!

  69. 69

    Re: andyhatesyou – Too true

  70. 70

Taylor Hanson? this will be interesting!

  71. Nikku says – reply to this

I wonder why a great drummer like Bun E. would join a mediocre lineup like that? CHEAP TRICK STILL ROCKS!

  72. 72

Unusual. What are you up to guys? This will definitely be different. Can't wait to have a listen.

  73. pomme says – reply to this

    that's going to be POP!

  74. 74

    Re: Aaaaarx
    I KNOW RIGHT!?? :o

  75. 75

I'm so glad to see that the majority of feedback is POSITIVE =)

BUT. To those of you who said that Hanson's carreer has "long been over," you are 100% WRONG.

Hanson has been on tour almost every year for the past 4 years. The have let free from the shitty music industry and have created their own lable (3cg). Once upon a time, they were forced to put off a lame image (luckily back then Disney wasn't that big into music) all in the name of $$$.. that they had to share with undeserving people. They even went on a little tour to college campuses several years ago to spread the word on indie music.

Not only are they extremely talented.. but they are also very giving and charitable. They dedicated their last tour to their charity focused on preventing poverty and AIDS in Africa. They met up one on one with their fans in most of the cities they went to and walked BAREFOOT on the streets to raise money.

I'm so excited about this amazing musical collaboration!!!

Ohhh shoot, Angie better watch out!

  76. 76

I'm intrested in hearing how this will sound. My best friend is into 90's alternative. And he flipped when sent it to him, I'm not even believing this…

  77. 77

I can't wait to hear them!

  78. 78

the headline of this story practically made me piss my pants. if this were 1996, everyone would have thought it was the apocalypse. actually, i'm thinking that right now even though it is 2009. i have a feeling this will be short lived much like +44. i can maybe understand these group merging together for a "supergroup" but i can't seen taylor hanson fitting into the equation.

  79. 79

How is that for shits and giggles… it sounds like an amazing line up. Will ANYONE remember lady gaga or katy perry in 10 years? Doubt it!
