And Now The Cookie Crumbles!

You know the economy is really bad when even the bastion of Americana and wholesomeness, the Girl Scouts, are feeling it. The girls are hurting in their pocket books as they face a decline in cookie sales.
Many regional Girl Scout councils are feeling the impact with declines as large as 19% in some pre-order sales for the month of January through early February. And, sadly, pre-order sales which take place mostly door-to-door or at workplaces make up about 70% of their cookie sales!
Michelle Tompkins, spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of the USA, said they are still hopeful they might make up for the poor sales by setting up shopping center booths this early Spring.
Though if the economy continues to decline, will many people even be going to the malls?
Most of the proceeds from the cookie sales go to paying for trips, community projects, and scholarships.
One member council from Ohia said longtime customers are still buying, but in smaller quantities. Adding, "If a customer was purchasing six to eight boxes, now they're purchasing three to four."
Denise Pesich, vice president of communications for Girl Scouts of the USA, stays optimistic and adds, "We're hopeful right now. The country, when in situations like this, goes back to what's nostalgic and gives them pleasure."
Let's hope that's the case.
We're totaling feeling like having some thin mints soon. And we just found out they've made a new Dulce de Leche cookie for 2009.
Can't wait to try those!

I only eat brownies…
ba da bump!
fIRST! AND I LOVE SAMOAS!!!!!MMMMMM
Hopefully thin mints stay!
if there caramel delights weren't so fucking good, i wouldn't support those crazy feminazi bitches
NO TENGO HAMBRE.
NEXT! YOU SUCK PEREZ!
I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but in New Jersey the Girl Scouts changed bakers last year and the cookies are not as good as they used to be. That's the reason I'm not purchasing and I know many others who say the same thing I did about the taste. It should be illegal to mess with the Thin Mints recipe!
The reason sale are down, is the for the past five years the price of GS cookies keep going up. This is the only organization that has to beg for money. Beer is cheaper and it makes their mommies prettier.
Maybe they shouldn't charge $6 for a box of 10 cookies
aww poor girl scouts
is that abigail breslin?
Youll just gain all that weight again if you start eating cookies. haha.
The peanut butter cookies are tainted…
Crumbs!
Re: vipervixen –
HaHa, you weren't first. HaHa.
They should start selling organic fruit - it's time for a change anyway.
No more cookies.
Boo hooo, too many fat fucks running around anyway.
next!
If they didn't charge $10 a box, they'd have no fucking problem!!!
They took away my favorite lemon coolers so they won't be getting any of my money this year.
If sales are down, they won't go up with those horrible mint cookies. I haven't bought any since they let go of those amazing white and chocolate ones with soft white middles. I used to buy 4 or 5 boxes, but those mint ones are disgusting. It's the cookies, fools.
People like to treat themselves with an inexpensive box of cookies to comfort themselves when times are down. Trust me on this. MacDonald's restaurant retail sales are up 4%, because people are still busy with two income households, but eat at the cheaper fast food joint now instead of a more expensive sit-down restaurant as a nod to the recession.
BOO!
If the cookies weren't so God awful expensive people would be buying them.
Tagalongs rule the known universe. I ate almost two boxes yesterday… Go to Walmart–they're set up by the door!
well each box is 5-6 bucks…….. i know its a once a yr thing, but thats a lil expensive even for good economic times…
is that not abigail breslin in the red dress?
Re: Niq the Skank! – You're soo right. LOL! (Comment #18)
You can buy some from my daughter!
Ok …that girl in red totally looks like abigail breslin!
If you want to support the GS, just give the girls selling cookies $10 toward their troop fund.
The troops selling cookies only get 10% of their sales. The rest goes to pay the bakeries and to the higher ups at the national level.
Re: TEAM BROWN 09 –
Yo tampoco :l
Re: juls2655 –
I was thinking, exactly the same thing…
I like OREOS!!!!
GS Cookies are only $3.50 a box in NC. 20 years ago the price was $2.50 a box. One dollar in 20 years ain't bad. Tagalongs are the best…you can't do better than peanut butter and chocolate.
OMG! The girl in the red looks exactly like Abigail Breslin. AHHH! Hilarious!
being the loyal girlscout i am i feel the need to tell you that the dulce de leche cookies are delicious! down here in florida cookie sales just ended and we did very well, i think!
Re: SheHasBigBoobs – YOU ARE SUPER ANNOYING
I want to buy Girl Scout cookies. I have seen no girl scouts. I figured some would come around or be out and about town, but no. I hope I find them at some point. I love the tagalongs and I was a girl scout as a kid. It's good.
They're $3.50 a box! Dallas is having no probs selling!
ICU Abigail Breslin!!!!!!!
I hate those girl scouts. They are always parked out in front of every store and harass you to buy cookies even if you already bought them… they only get 25 cents a box anyways! No thanks!
Damn I just literally KILLED a box of Caramel D'lites like 2 nites ago (but then again I did smoke some haze soooo)
But yeah, they can set up shop at my job cause I'll stay buying the D'lites~~~
lmao you got that off bruce almighty i love that movie
is that Abigail breslin?
Re: Austinbaby –
That's actually a very good idea…I'll remember that next time. I really support the girl scouts because they are very open minded, and they try to get girls of all different races, backgrounds, and religions to become friends. It's helped me be a better person!
Sales are down because these boxes are a rip off… i mean, come on $4 bucks a small box! i know it goes to a good cause but come on, in these tough times they need to cut prices and go without the large profit. besides, they charge the girls parents for everthing so, it's not like they are broke….
Do I see Abigail Breslin in there? LOL
is that abigal breslin, front in the polka dots?
So the reality is…Girls sell the cookies and a lot of you are saying that they only get ".25 a box" what you clearly don't know is that girls only pay $10 to join Girl Scouts and councils spend around $250 per girl to provide her the programs, staff, adult training (you know for the leaders), and materials. Not to mention that that 10 bucks goes to the national organization, not the local council. Cookie sales are not a fundraiser, it is a program to teach girls about setting goals, following a budget, and being entrepreneurs. Girls aren't just selling cookies they are learning. By the way every council shares all of those figures to every parent or volunteer that participates in the cookie sale and to anyone that would ask it is no big secret.
Take the time to educate yourself, decide to support something or not based on facts not what people assume. And for gods sake buy a box of cookies.
Perez, you can buy your dulce de leche cookies from my 1st grade brownie! In Cali (we're in san diego) they're $4 a box. I'm the leader and we made sure all our girl can say "DUUUL-SAY DAY LEY-CHAY!!!!" To the rest: the presales are almost done. You'll start seeing the girls selling cookies in front of the grocery stores in the second week of march.
Stop it Piggy we all know you are a frustrated girl scout and that you are crazyyyy to munch on all those cookies but no need to post about it on your site.. none of them are celebs or in some scandalicious beef so get over it…
you know you always wanted to be a girl scout piggy… hope you choke with those cookies…
the girl in the minnie mouse dress is Abigail Breslin
