This Is Not A Joke

According to a new study from The Nielsen Company, the average American now watches more than 151 hours of TV a month. That's about five hours a day and an all-time high.

WTF?????

We can understand spending that much time online. However, factor in the time Americans spend on the Internet AND watching TV - is there even time to sleep?????

I wish I could watch 5 hours of tv a day…I spend too much time on my laptop doing work, listening to music, readng crap and playing games!

    6. 6

And this is why most Americans are FATSOS, stressed, DUMB AS FUCK.

    7. 7

tv, probably not but movies yeah haha also i barely sleep

    8. 8

i realized i watch way too much tv just last night… so i turned it off and picked up a book.. it felt awesome :]

    9. 9

      ha first

    10. 10

Not surprized… I guess we just can't get enough! TV has been shown to affect human brains in the same way as a drug, artificially activating the reward pathway.

    11. 11

This is why most Americans are FAT, stressed (cuz of lack of sleep), and DUMB AS FUCK.

      see Idiocracy…..

    12. 12

well if you throw in all that little boy buggery with Zacquisha and the Blowmas Brothers YOU CAN'T BE GETTING ANY SLEEP AT ALL!!!

    13. 13

When is your site going to be available In HD Rim Job!

    14. 14

      15

      I LOVE TV :D
IT WOULD EXPLAIN ALL THE FATTYS

    16. 16

This explains why a lot of American's are overweight and are somewhat ignorant…

    17. 17

Multi-tasking. I'm on the computer probably 10hrs a day… (I know, sad) - but I watch TV at the same time during the evening. I usually watch tv from 6-12. Maybe the noon news too.

    18. 18

Re: TrippinInaBox – We heard ya the first time, now EAT A DICK!

    19. 19

      First! FINALLY! :P

    20. 20

Americans are staying home more, Perez!! Not everyone's got your dough babe.

    21. 21

      -
      I DOUBT THAT'S ACCURATE.
      -
MORE LIKELY WE SPEND THAT MUCH TIME WITH THE TELEVISION ON, BUT CERTAINLY NOT ABSORBED BY IT OR ATTENTIVELY WATCHING IT.
      -

    22. 22

Have had no TV in my house for 4 years now. NONE - not 1 channel.
The programming and Commercials are WAY too annoying.
Advertisers and "Wag the Dog" type Media Play can go fuck themselves :)
5 hours a day watching TV? WTF is wrong with people?
Holy fuck no wonder you're all so fat & Brainwashed!

    23. 23

And there is no chance people can be watching TV while cruising the internet?

    24. 24

if it's reality tv, I'll watch it!!!

    25. 25

Re: TheXenos – Um, no you're not.

    26. 26

i can totally understand this, and wow am i glad i'm not the only one watching that much TV!! rarely is there 5 hours of "quality" television, but nevertheless….yeah i think that study is probably true :)

we'll always have time for you though Perez!!!

    27. 27

DVR baby. you can watch more with less commercials and how many people multitask. i watch tv and work at the same time.

      28

My tv is on all the time. I just like the background noise when I'm doing other stuff. Just cause it's on doesn't mean we're watching it.

    29. 29

Who cares? And I'm sure more people are their computers even longer!

    30. 30

The elderly watch quite a bit of tv because that is all they have to do. And thinka bout people that fall asleep every night with the tv on. I don't believe that it's an accurate average.

    31. 31

      CNN
      BBC World News
      CSPAN

    32. 32

…yet your site is plastered with tv ads every week (including today's)

    33. 33

      Re: TrippinInaBox

Mmhmm, yes, because American's are the ONLY people that watch TV and are obese. I really hate ignorant people. I'm really doubting this is accurate. My TV may be on for that long, but I'm rarely watching it.

    34. @v@ says – reply to this

      34

There isn't enough truly decent programming to fill 10 hours a week, let alone 151. Mind numbing garbage in, garbage out.

    35. 35

that is not true- the TV could be on but doesn't mean we are watching it. Those numbers are based on how long the TV is on in each house hold. My TV is on 100% of the day doesn't mean i'm watching it.

    36. 36

That's because 1/2 of us are unemployed and have nothing better to do.

    37. 37

I would say it has something to do with unemployment rates being so high.

    38. 38

Re: beanny – turn the boob tube off and look for a job

    39. 39

Yeah, that sounds about right…I watch tv with my computer in my lap, so I do both at once lol

    40. 40

Hello most people prob watch tv while on the computer! That's what I do. And the TV maybe on but I'm not paying attention half the time… it's nice background noise so I'm not sitting in complete silence!

    41. 41

I wonder if they're counting DVR recordings that people may not watch entirely, and skip the commercials. That would cut out a good chunk of time.

    42. 42

well if everything wasnt so damn expensive maybe we'd be out more, buying shit and moving. but for the most part tv is free, sitting is free…

    43. 43

I have my television on when i'm home just for background noise while i'm doing other things. I know a lot of other people who do the same. They are not actually sitting in front of the tv and watching it for 5 hours straight.

    44. 44

Re: Provokedflame12 – don't know how your picture comes up on your tv but I know I have to pay for cable. and the better I want my rolodex of shows to be, the more I must pay (i.e. starz, hbo, showtime, etc.)

HELLO P! Think about it. with the "recession" people cant afford to go out and do shit so no fucking kidding they are going to watch more tv DUH!

    47. 47

Sad. I got rid of my TV three years ago, limit my internet time and now I read, I make things, build stuff, take lessons. dance in my living room, and enythings i can do to fill ym time I'm centered, slender, fulfilled, and inspired.

Viva femme de la Renaissance American !!!!

    48. 48

THAT's what happens when you're in a recession folks! People STAY HOME and watch tv, surt the net and do things that don't cost money! DUH!

    49. 49

Mark my words, GOLD will continue to rise, inflation will set it, unemployment will rise and home values will drop a little more. The people who will get mortgage "bailouts" will default and that's when the housing market will bottom. People will continue to watch tv, even inside their cardboard box tent homes

    50. 50

alot of us do both at the same time.

    51. 51

the american public is to blame for the trouble our country is in - we vote 'em in, they don't vote themselves in…….it all boils down to, once again, America is lazy!!!

    52. 52

well if people are losing jobs then they are staying at home more, everything cost money, and tv is a cheap form of entertainment

    53. 53

If you think about how many Americans have recently lost their jobs then it really isn't such a shocking amount of TV.

    54. 54

      that's me!!!!!!!!!!!!

    55. 55

WOW, that is a lot of Telemundo!

    56. 56

I probably watch that much. I guess I am a TV junkie!

    57. 57

Gee..unemployed, can't FIND a job, depressed, tired of sleeping…what else is there to do all day???

    58. 58

I almost always have the tv on, BBC news mostly, when I am on the net, browsing and playing poker. I am a ludomaniac info junkie… sad sad sad

    59. 59

      this is soooo sad &tru

    60. 60

This does not surpise me. Our country is hurting right now, and I read a study a couple months ago about how "unhappy" people watch TV more than "happy" people. It gives some sort of comfort. As for me, I watch TV while I'm on the internet. I like to multi-task. :-) And I've def. been watching more TV!

    61. 61

      Re: mikepete
you're very right. I feel your pain.

    62. 62

i never watch tv anymore, just internet

    63. 63

I watch tv for eight hours, while at the same time being online. At school, I just use my phone to go on online, IM, text. When I get home, I turn on the tv, my pc, and just sit there like a zombie. It's pretty sad. But yeah it's just fun. ^^

    64. 64

Well, there's an obvious explanation. It all has to do wi…
… shoot, gotta go, the Simpsons is on..

    65. 65

That is complete BS. It makes no sense.

    66. 66

WTF!?!?!?!? I'm 14 and I ONLY watch TWELVE hours a MONTH! Seriously, I only watch Secret Life and American Idol, that's it!

    67. 67

i don't know what i would do without watching tv or the internet i love them!!!

    68. 68

Perhaps they sit online whilst watching TV?

    69. 69

i dont have time to sleep its just inconvinient
and im not american but that doesnt really make a difference

    70. 70

Yeah they watch tv while eating all their junkfood.

    71. 71

Duh, that has a lot to do with the recession!! People are spending a lot more time in the home and a lot less time out spending money with friends and family. Watching TV at home is cheap and keeps us from being to bored, somewhat occupied. I don't like letting the kids whatch hours and hours of TV, it isn't good for them. It teaches them to stay in and let themselves beccome couch potatoes and their brains get mushy.=]=] They need to stay creative and not dependent on living through the television.
