Don't Call Him Schizo!

A rep for actor-turned-musician Joaquin Phoenix is super pissed that a Chicago-based psychiatrist/author called the bearded-one possibly 'schizophrenic' in an LA Times interview.
The head doctor, Paul Dobransky, pointed to Phoenix's "socially inappropriate behavior" (i.e. new 'rap' career, bushy beard and his bizarre appearance on David Letterman's show). The doc said, "The jury is not exactly in on what is happening. Whatever it is, it's not funny — whether it's drug abuse, mental illness coming on or the clumsiest attempt ever at a career change."
Phoenix's rep reprimanded the doc in an interview with MTV, saying, "How absolutely inappropriate for a doctor who has no personal interaction or relationship with someone to diagnose them. And to do so in a public forum. Hope they spelled his name right. Another 15-minute 'expert' is born!"
Why won't the rep just come clean?
Joaquin's NOT schizo and this is all one big joke, right?

He's not a schizophrenic, he's ripping off Andy Kaufman. Kaufman made characters and people never knew if he was joking or not. Only Phoenix is not nearly as brilliant as Kaufman.

I don't believe for one minute that Joaquin Phoenix is schizophrenic; all this craziness is a publicity stunt to garner attention for his career changes.
Schizo behavior is best witnessed in the likes of Britney Spears…and even she falls short of the mark. She's just riding the short bus, hopefully into oblivion.

Look. His reps being pissed is about money. Period. I happen to agree with that doctor. You don't have to be a shrink or know Joaquin to know something is way wrong with him. I think he needs help. If his people are so fucking greedy and keep saying he's fine, they are delusional. He is not going to get any offers for film work and his "rap artist" music career is bullshit. I know Joaquin was interested in music and he directed some music videos. But he has always liked the film process. When he was on Letterman, Dave tried to make the best of the situation bcz they were on live TV, but I was also impressed with how gentle Dave was with him. He could have really messed with Joaquin. Especially if he thought it was bogus. Joaquin has issues. He is fragile. I hope he gets help bcz he really is a good actor. I also think Ben stiller was out of line.
Either he really is having a breakdown and is in denial, or he's pretending to be. Either way, not funny at all. I'm no doctor, but from what I have seen from his appearance on Letterman, the signs are clear. His agent or whoever okayed that "appearance" in either case, shame on you. I hope he gets the help he needs.

If he's fooling everyone then it's genius. I hope that's the case b/c if it's mental illness then that's really sad. There's a book called SILLY LITTLE RICH GIRL for sale at barnes and noble online and it's about a celeb who's acting dumb to fool everyone, but she's also mentally ill. Anyway, kinda reminds me of this. Anyway, hope this is all just a joke.
either that, or the doctor in question is part of the hoax. that's the first thing i thought when i heard about this, since it was leaked that sources close to joaquin were saying it was all an elaborate publicity stunt. what better way to counter that, than have an independent doctor come out "in a public forum" and suggest that joaquin might truly be losing his mind… and then have your own rep deny it. just a conspiracy theory i guess, but considering the lengths he is going to be believed, it seems to make sense!
obviously he's got some heavy baggage - addiction in the genes, watching river die, and being raised in the children of god, and working in a totally superficial industry that thrives on people fucking themselves up - look at amy winehouse. doesn't anyone know the history of children of god, haven't you seen or heard the story of davidito? google that one & see what a great environment it was for those kids!
you forget a few years back at awards show he was being interviewd and said he couldn,t consintrate because bugs were crawling around inside his brain..as he kept scratching his head .so your either nuts.or pretending to be nuts.either way …grow up…
He's not schizophrenic - people are normally diagnosed in their 20s - he's a bit old to have his first schizophrenic episode. Manic Depression or drug induced craziness - maybe - but I'm still not convinced this isn't all just some dumbass publicity stunt.
I think people need to get involved in their own communities more so we have less of a need to obsess over behaviours of people we don't even know!

Re: Indie_Queen – When people have acute nervous breakdowns, mental illness can manifest including 'schizophrenia' at ages other than early 20's. It is devastating. I think he is extremely talented but if is trying to turn mental disease into some long running joke, I don't find it funny.

The doctor is qualified to make an assesment of this guy's behavior. He didn't say specifically that it was Schizophrenia…he said it may be based on his current behaviors. Or…it could be drugs…or it could be a really bad career move. Regardless….SOMETHING is going on with Joaquin…and it's not good.
He's crazy - look at his history of drugs and watching his brother die not to mention he's from a nutty family that probably didn't seek therapy to help him deal with any of the loss issues. I feel really bad that he's emotionally and mentally sick and we're all just sitting around watching it…..like we watch/enable every other celebrity. It's sad.
Mr. Phoenix is not mad, drugged or stupid. He is mocking us all and making a movie. Check out his face (mouth) during the infamous Letterman interview. In certain parts where he is blind-sided by Dave's off-the-cuff wit, it is all he can do not to crack up. He has to look away and take a breath to keep his composure. No wonder he always wears the glasses. He couldn't pull this off if we could see his eyes.
So far he has the performing footage, interview footage and award show footage. No doubt there is behind-the-scenes footage we will see when the biopic "Pheonix Rises from the Ashes" hits theatres sometime mid 2010.
Wrap it up soon though Borat, I mean JP, and lets see if it's as funny in the movie as it has been in reality watching it be filmed.

I think it's all a gag or something like Andy Kaufman would have done. Watch the tail end of the last Letterman interview with him. He stands, turns his back to the crowd and cameras, remove his glasses, then shakes Davids hand while telling him he did a good job putting up with his crap.
Unfortunately the doctor was misattributed regarding his quote; he has a genuine concern that Joaquin Phoenix might be suffering from mental illness and could need serious help. If Phoenix is on his way through a bad place; that is absolutely tragic. However, if he's being a typical "actor," hyping a new role then he's a douche. If he hasn't learned due to his brother's OD and he's on a drug kick, then he's a douche. The odds don't look good that he'll come away from this not being a douche bag…
