Sad News: The Rescue Effort Is Over!
As we mentioned yesterday, of the four football players missing at sea off the coast of Florida, only Nick Schuyler has been found. He was rescued on Monday and had been floating in the water since Saturday afternoon!
However, as of Tuesday evening, the US Coast Guard will suspend its search for the three missing men, two of which are NFL players and a friend.
The men missing are Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, free-agent Corey Smith and former college player William Bleakley.
During a news conference today, the Coast Guard announced, "We're extremely confident that if there were any survivors on the surface of the water that we would have found them."
During their 50 search missions in the last 60 hours, they have found a cooler and a life jacket.
Bruce Cooper, Marquis' father, said in a statement, "Marquis is an avid fisherman; he goes deep sea fishing any opportunity he gets. Two years ago I went deep sea fishing with him. I swore I would never do so again; I didn't like the fact that I couldn't see land."
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the three men still missing.

when I saw that boat I thought "wow that looks dangerous" and I guess by golly it was very dangerous. What an awful thing foe their loved ones as they have no clue what really happened to them. so sad

This is just plain wrong! You do not call off a search only 24 hrs. after a survivor is found. Very disappointed in the Coast Guard. But here is what is going to happen, people are going to start to go out and look themselves and just create more troubles for the coast guard and maybe even other people dying. If they called off the search for my kid, I would be out there in a heartbeat! I realize they are not kids, but they are someones adult kids.

I mean you have a much better chance of survival with a life jacket, and I would think you could float for days. And what if the guy they rescued gave wrong info because he was so out of it and disoriented, what if he made mistakes in telling them. I am just shocked.

They should drill Nick Schuyler about his statement that the boat was anchored when it capsized. That sounds real fishy to me. You can't anchor a 21' boat in the middle of the ocean.

Anyway…a 60 hour search in that many square miles is crazy, they are right to call it off…if they haven't been found yet, there is a very small chance they are alive. The only reason the one player was alive was because hey was sitting on the bottom of the capsized ship. Again, it's a real shame.
This is so sad. I feel so bad for these families. There are so many athletes who are doing horrible things and here these guys were just innocently enjoying the ocean. My heart breaks for them.

Re: **GIRLCARDINALSFAN** – the longest a person can survive in 60-something degree waters is about 40 hours, and the only reason why schuyler survived was because he was OUT of the water and on top of the capsized boat….therefore, after 60 hours, there virtually no chance of those guys' survival, they most likely caught hypothermia, it doesn't matter if you have a life vest on. so so sad, poor guys :'(

ok so they just rescued the one guy? so thats it? they fucking call off the rescue for the others just like that? but we were searching for natalee halloway for how many fucking months? and still searching……all this caylee anthony on nancy grace every damn night and we just GIVE UP on the search? well we found the white guy, its all good hahahhahahahahhaa.. just kidding, but seriously, we have NOT searched long enough for the others.

This story makes me so sad. Marquis Cooper is from the same area I live and his dad's a local TV sports anchor (here in Phoenix). His dad, like his son, seems so good, kind, and extremely personable. Unfortunately, since the boat capsized Saturday afternoon there's an extremely low chance of finding anyone else alive. You can only survive approximately 3 days w/o water, plus I'm sure they suffered from hypothermia. Pretty much any chance of survival for the missing men is over… However the Cooper family has hired a search party of their own to keep searching for Marquis and the rest of the missing men. The family's search will being tomorrow… Very, very sad.
That's really sad… but hey if they find at least one that one would be an instant heroe right? hope that happens… even though i don't see how!
Re: chelseapaige – They were going out of Clearwater Beach & 30 miles in the Gulf Of Mexico! My brother drowned off of Clearwater Beach about 20 miles off the Coast of the Gulf od f Mexico! He was in a scuba diving accident! Boating & diving can be very dangerous in bad weather. RIP for those lost!
Re: Kate27 – yes, @ least they found one! If the coast guards stopped searching it is more likely they will never be found! They more than likely drowned! The waves are too much even for a great swimmer to handle. Remember to always wear a life jacket! The one who survived was wearing one!
Re: Fawk u and ur issues – yes last year unfortunately my brother died tragically from drowning in a scuba diving accident! coincidentially, he was in the same waters as these football players! My local news said they were going out from clearwater beach same as my brother & were 30 miles off the coast of the gulf, just like my brother! it only took the coast guard 4 hrs to recover my brother but he was found dead floating with his scuba gear half off! I think he ran out of oxygen & probably died from the benz.
Re: topper – yes you can! my brother would scuba dive before he drowned & the bought was anchored 25 miles off the gulf coast. Scuba divers always anchor, the boat was smaller than 21 ft. which 21ft. is a small boat not that big in size! I live where those guys were boating off of clearwater beach.
Re: vegasvixxen23 – There is no possible way of survival if your in the middle of a ocean! My brother died in the middle of the ocean! It took very little time to find him but he was dead from drowning! The ocean is a beast & will swallow up the best of swimmers
I feel very horrible for these families and men. I think it is very rude for people to say the Coast Guard did not do enough! My husband was there day and night for 60 hours of search and rescue, during terrible weather conditions!!!! I think you should be respectable for the job that they did do instead of bad mouthing what they didn't! The Coast Guard wanted to find these men as much as we all wanted them to it just didn't happen and there is a reason for that….they were no longer floating!! It wasn't just some little search party they scanned and combed the ocean again wanting to find these men to bring their families some sort of peace of mind, I think we should give them the credit they deserve. People like you "Cardinals fan" are what make our country shitty!!!!! Maybe your ass should have gone searching for them in 14 foot seas!

Yes, it is a very tragic loss, but you need to be less idiotic and realize that the human body cannot possibly live longer than the 60 hours they have searched in that cold of water. Ever hear of a think called hypothermia? They are dead, be respectful and accept it.
The only reason the survivor they found was still alive was because of the boat, yet he was still suffering from hypothermia. So how on earth do you expect the others to be alive after this long and without the boat.
