The murderer was just found not guilty by reason of insanity!

He will be sent to an institution, without serving any jail time, and will be mentally evaluated every year. If and when he is deemed "sane" again, the murderer will be released.

This is absolutely disturbing. This man should be put away for life whether it is in jail or in an institution. He should never be let out because he is a danger to society. This was a random attack and if he is let out he could very well do it again. Who says after he gets help he'll continue to stay on his medication. He claims voices told him to kill this boy. Did these voices also tell him to decapitate and then continue to eat and hide his body parts?!???? I'm from Canada and live an hour away from where this tragedy took place and I'm honestly afraid for my safety if people who do horrendous acts like this can get away with it. This man should have been found GUILTY for his actions and if he needs help get it for him, but they should never consider releasing him into society again. He is a danger and no matter how much help he gets that won't change.

Look I agree with everyone saying that this man should not be released from jail OR an institution - he certainly shouldn't, and has shown he is not capable of taking care of himself on his own.

BUT for all of you saying he is GUILTY, you need to know that to commit a crime, the prosecution must prove the actus reus (the act - killing Tim McLean, which was not in issue at all) and the mens rea of the accused (the mental element, demonstrating that the person knew what they were doing when committing the actus reus). Where someone is found Not Criminally Responsible by Mental Disorder, it means that the person did not have the requisite mens rea when committing the act. THAT is why he is not considered "guilty" by the court.

I don't necessarily agree with the NCRMD finding as I am sure it is abused frequently, and also that individuals like Mr. Li did commit horrendous acts, but that is the law as it stands in common law countries (i.e. Canada, USA, England). Anyways, that is why he is not considered GUILTY.

All you people supporting this ruling…I bet, if it was your son/brother etc who had been so brutally murdered, you wouldn't care if that person was suffering mental illness or not - you would want at the very LEAST the knowledge that he was going SOMEWHERE and was never, ever to be released. That's not the case here. Imagine being the parent and in 10 years walking down the street, only to come face-to-face with this MURDERER because he was deemed 'sane' now. He may be crazy, but he still killed someone (chopped him up into little pieces and most likely at half his heart and his eyes!!)

I live in Manitoba and find this disturbing but not surprising. We live where everyone has rights. My god this fucker could be out again in a few years because god stopped talking to him with all the meds he was on. He will get out, stop taking his meds and god will start talking to him again. this man will be dealt with more properly in a mental institution. he is obviously extremely mentally unstable, and a high-security mental facility will actually be able to handle him better than a prison would. besides, chances of him ever getting let out of a psychiatric clinic are slim to none, so it's in effect the same as jail for him.

yes, that was totally effed up. pizzed me off. made me mad to be a canadian. we're such wimps and bleeding hearts when it comes to criminals and the "mentally ill". we don't even have the freaking death penalty. also greyhound has a lot to do with this. no freaking security like at the airports. anyone can show up on the bus with a bag full of guns and knives and kill everyone on the bus and greyhound will be like well it is too expensive to install security gates at every depot in canada. poor tim. rest in peace. justice was not done.
