Dora The Explorer Gets A Makeover

According to a recent press release from Nickelodeon, Dora the Explorer - a cartoon character hailed as a positive, intelligent role model for little girls - will be receiving a makeover as the character grows up. Unfortunately, her makeover will be at the hands of a Bratz doll.
The press release explains, "As tweenage Dora, our heroine has moved to the big city, attends middle school and has a whole new fashionable look. What’s more, she now has a rich online world in which girls can explore, play games, customize, and most importantly solve mysteries with Dora and her new friends. Adding to the play value, Dora’s online world is interactive with the new doll line."
Additionally, in the online world, "This exciting innovation in computer-connected play offers girls a unique interactive experience: as girls are playing online they can customize their doll and watch as she magically transforms right before their eyes. For example, by changing Dora’s hair length, jewelry, and eye color on screen, the Dora doll magically changes as well."

Giant painted eyes and huge lips - the first Bratz doll I bought for my stepdaughter was wearing a G-string for Gods sake - I nearly died when she took it out of the box. I'm an advertising major at the University of Texas at Austin, and lemme just say that this article is distressing on so many levels.
Firstly, I would like to say that whoever came up with Dora the Explorer did so with the intentions of creating a mainstream American television show that would appeal to the steadily growing hispanic population. However, I honestly feel that this show was made just to exploit and attract the gradually shortening attention span of young kids who live in a society that has virtually NO RULES against advertising to the young, naive, and vulnerable…..
In a world where young kids are surrounded by gore, sex, vanity, and materialism, what else would you expect?
Seriously, though. What sick fuck would think that coming up with a "Tween Dora" is cool? If you read through the lines enough, it's incredibly obvious what's going on.
Until we all come together to stop it, the reality is that our children will soon live in a world totally caught up in the illusion that Child Marketing trapped them in. We have to rally together and help save our children's creativity individuality.
