Shameful. There are much better organizations to contribute to!

Shameful to be breeding puppies when they could be using shelter dogs. There are many better organizations that rescue shelter dogs rather than contributing to the obscenity that is the way we treat dogs in this society.

You know what's shameful- the fact that people who don't have any idea what they're talking about are making such statements.
As a volunteer with an organization (which also trains service dogs) which has a professional relationship with PADS- I know that many organizations choose to use their own breedings of dogs for safety & trainability factors.
We've used rescue dogs & donated dogs before, but the graduation rate is around 14%. Where as the dogs that we breed are 80%- because we have a better understanding of what they're going to end up being like. For organizations who are struggling for donations & barely getting by it's just not realistic for people to expect us to put in $20 000 (the price of training, spaying/neutering, other vetting, meds & food for the puppies) into a dog which likely won't graduate. It is unfortunate but it's reality. It just isn't possible.

This is a great organization Perez! Nice Choice!

Re: VeganVal – what the eff? where else do you think they get the dogs from? read the faqs on that web-site before you go around screaming bloody murder.

"PADS has their own breeding program and the majority of our service dogs come from there. We also accept donated puppies from other Assistance Dog schools and breeders. Most of our hearing dogs come from breeders or rescues and animal shelters."

I raise dogs for another guide dog organization and I couldn't agree more with you (although my organization doesn't take outside dogs). They know what they want, they know how to breed the dogs to get traits, qualities they desire. Yes there are a lot of shelter dogs out there and it is a shame, but at least dogs that don't graduate from the organization go to other schools or people can adopt them as well, and there is no chance that THOSE dogs fill up shelters.
