Not to discredit the the English Beat, but they weren't the band "that started it all." Yeah, they were one of the first 2-Tone bands, along with The Specials and The Selecter, who began in the 70s. 2-Tone was influenced by rock steady and reggae, who happen to be influenced by ska, which started in the 50s. But if you wanna go even further, ska was influenced by jazz and r&b. After 2-Tone was second wave and third wave ska.
