New Vaginal Gel Stops AIDS Virus
Cosmetic Ingredient GML Protects Monkeys From AIDS Virus
A new kind of vaginal gel prevents sexual transmission of the AIDS virus in monkey studies.
The anti-HIV ingredient in the gel is glycerol monolaurate or GML. It's already FDA approved as an ingredient in cosmetics and medicines.
"The results are very encouraging. They point to a novel avenue to prevent sexual transmission of HIV," study researcher Ashley T. Haase, MD, head of the microbiology department at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, said at a telephone news conference.
The surprise finding that GML can block HIV comes from basic research showing that the AIDS virus gains a foothold in the vagina by taking advantage of the body's immune system. Immune responses to the virus draw T cells — the white blood cells HIV loves to infect — to the site of infection. Without T-cell recruitment, HIV loses its grip.
That's where GML comes in. The antimicrobial agent affects immune responses and breaks the chain of events that let HIV spread through the body.
"We thought if we could modulate the immune response at the portal of HIV entry, we could block sexual transmission," Haase said. "[Colleague] Patrick Schlievert's work with GML showed that it had many properties that might block HIV expansion and systematic spread."
Haase, Schlievert, and colleagues gave five rhesus macaque monkeys daily GML treatments before putting 200 infectious doses of deadly SIV — the monkey version of HIV — into their vaginas. Another four animals got a gel without GML.
The four animals not given GML got AIDS. Those treated with GML showed no sign of infection during the short-term study, although one of the five animals showed signs of infection several months later. But just as HIV drugs with different modes of action are more effective when mixed into a drug "cocktail," Haase says GML could be mixed with different kinds of anti-HIV agents.
"GML could be part of a combined strategy with another vaginal microbicide, such as PRO 2000, with a different mechanism of action," he suggests.
Ingredients of GML Anti-HIV Gel in Common Use
GML is found in breast milk, Schlievert says, and it is used in many cosmetics and in medicines taken orally or used on the skin. And recent studies show that GML kills many different kinds of germs — including vaginal yeast infections and several different sexually transmitted diseases, said Schlievert, professor of microbiology at the University of Minnesota.
"GML is presently being considered as an additive to tampons because of its ability to interfere with bacterial growth, including the bacteria that cause toxic shock syndrome," Schlievert said at the news conference.
For vaginal use in the monkey studies — and with an eye toward future human use — GML was mixed with KY Warming Liquid, an over-the-counter product widely used as a personal lubricant.
"What was done was to combine two FDA-approved medical devices to create another approved device," Schlievert said.
However, Schlievert said GML has not yet been tested for long-term human use.
And there's a lot more work to do with monkeys before GML gel is ready for human tests. That will have to be done before human studies of GML gel for HIV prevention.
Haase, Schlievert, and colleagues report their findings in the March 4 online edition of the journal Nature.

If this science holds up in humans it will be a much needed and important breakthtough for HIV infections, at least in women. This will be good news for regions, such as Africa, that have been andn continue to be devastated by largely hetero HIV.

The reason that this is such a big deal is that it will place the power of HIV prevention in the hands of women, specifically women that live in extremely male dominated societies. Therefore, in situations where a man doesn't want to wear a condom, a woman can apply this and reduce her risk of being infected with HIV.
And it 'just' works on monkeys? Success on monkeys is highly indicative that a drug will work on humans. This is especially true with a medication that is not ingested, such as this. This is why science has faced so many issues in this countries because we have ignorant people passing judgment on things they know nothing about.

AIDS in primates and AIDS in humans is totally different. Primate AIDS is not terminal and won't kill a primate whereas both don't apply to human AIDS. Humans are the ONLY animal in which AIDS can kill. After 25 years of non-human based AIDS vaccine development, there are 30, count 'em, THIRTY effective vaccines that protect primates from contracting the AIDS virus. There is NOT ONE for humans. Non-human based research is flawed and history has proven that 75% of all prescription drugs are recalled because after being proven safe on lab animals end up being dangerous and sometimes deadly in humans.

That's about 85% of the population. I am Rh negative, which I do not have the protein in my blood. So basically all the reasearch is done on monkeys who have almost the same DNA as humans and the Rh positive factor. So it is very ignorant of you to say that it will work on black people "and will it work on the rest of us". Unless you are Rh negative you are closer to being a monkey than I am, regardless of race. OK so we're agreed the disease crossed over to humans in Africa, hence it is 99% certain that for arguments sake it would be a black African who unfortunately contracted the virus; since nearly all people in and around the area where it originated are black, it was not from North Africa where there is a large Arab population, or South Africa with a minority white community.
However I think we also agree that racist comments are not welcome.
I don't 'blame' any race specifically for AIDS, it's awful that it happened to anyone in the first place nevermind millions of people of every race worldwide.
What I took issue with was someone specifically blaming the white race for it when in all probability it was firstly contracted by a black person- that's not racist. I meant no malice by it, I was merely correcting someone. What I also didn't agree with is the amount of white people slamming 'perezisaspicfag' (and rightly so) and yet 'smh@ppl' s comments are met with a wall of silence from blacks. Why? There are a number if reasons why would be alerted to perezisaspicfag's comments, one of them being that user chose to have the name Perezisaspicfag! I mean, that's a bit more bold, don't you think? In addition, (from a sociological perspective) the concept of racism is a relative thing- can you really be racist towards white people? Some people would argue that you can't. Anyway, I still disagree your statedment that HIV/AIDS almost certainly (99% as you say) originating from a black person. Some have argued that It originated from a white researcher in Africa and suchlike. But like I said, that doesn't even matter.
