Boston Kids Are Misguided, Blame Rihanna For Her Attack
According to a new survey of Boston teens, it's Rihanna's fault that Chris Brown beat her!
Come again?!
Survey says that of 200 Boston kids aged 12-19 questioned, "51% believe Chris Brown was responsible for the incident, 46% believe Rihanna was responsible, and 52% said both were to blame; 52% said the media was treating Brown unfairly; 44% said fighting was a normal part of a relationship."
Not only that, but a "significant" number said that "Rihanna was destroying Chris Brown’s career" and just as many women as men placed the blame on Rihanna.
How sad!
Casey Corcoran, director of the commission’s Start Strong initiative, which conducted the survey, said, "The story of Chris Brown and Rihanna may have happened 3,000 miles away, but it is very much a Boston story. We do know that teen dating violence or intimate partner violence cuts across all cultures, classes, genders."
Experts surmise that young people's sympathy toward Brown may be a result of the "normalization of violence" in pop culture.
Collins-Gousby of Casa Myrna-Vazquez, a Boston-based anti-violence organization, said, "[Chris Brown] is or had been promoted as the kid next door, he was familiar and likeable. Among teens, I think their first reaction was, well, what did she do to deserve a beating that significant?"
But Corcoran also sees the incident as "an opportunity to have this conversation with the young people in our lives."
So parents, talk to your kids!!!!!!!!!

As far as I'm concerned there is a very dangerous message being sent out by the masses including Oprah, Tyra, and Ellen, which is women can lose their tempers and hit men and if the man hits back he's wrong and will be labeled a batterer. There may be a whole lot of females getting hurt or dead if they believe that crap. Women and girls keep your hands to your damn selves when you get mad and maybe you won't have to worry about a man knocking you the fuk out. If reports that Rihanna actually attacked Chris first, he was right to get her the hell off of him. Yes, she got hurt the worst, but again, keep your hands to yourself. The warrants and detective notes contained Rihanna's version of events, which may or may not be completely true. If women are so fragile then we should act like and stop using men as punching bags. Those kids in Boston are not stupid. We live in a violent society. They have either witnessed or participated in FIGHTS between men and women, which is what the Rihanna /Chris Brown seems to have been. We don't live in a perfect world. Men and women can both abusive in relationships. Unfortunately people snap and react in a way they've never done before. It happens.

thank you perez for posting this! now people can understand why this is such an important issue right now. yes, chris brown and rihanna are both human and they make mistakes, but those mistakes influence children thousands of miles away. it is so sad to see young children especially girls think that fighting and violence in relationships is normal. parents/schools/ and other organizations need to work harder at get the word out about domestic violence among other important issues, because obviously children are profoundly being affected by things that happen in the media. an example needs to be made here, that is the main conclusion.

Fault always lies with the physical assaulter. It does take two to tango, but there's tango-ing, and then there's hitting. No one 'makes' a person hit another person.
You can argue all you like and not go to jail, but hit another and that's illegal.

I disagree that no one makes another hit. One person hitting another is good motivation to hit back. Yes, Chris Brown is facing consequences from both the public and judicial system for hitting Rihanna. If she admitted hitting him as has been reported, there needs to be consequences for her also for putting them both in harms way. Those consequences IMO does not need to be promoting her as a victim of domestic violence. I suspect the reason some in the music industry have taken a more mature approach than blog owners and posters on message who are fond of altering Chris Brown's name and publicly crucifying him is that they may actually know the individuals involved and believe it's more constructive pray and support both individuals. I've also read that Rihanna is known to be a physically aggressive young lady and it was only a matter of time before Chris Brown snapped. Regardless, it's happened, the two participants have apparently reunited, and he now has the judicial system to answer to. All this hateful directed at the both of them because they're not letting the public control them needs to stop.
And are you really surprised with the influence of media in today's culture on teenagers? Growing up as a teen today is different than 10 years ago. I'm not making an excuse for these teens, but it is the sad reality of the world we live in today.

Through coercion, threats, feelings of helplessness, and fear Rihanna went back to Chris Brown. I wouldn't call it so much her "choice" to go back to Brown, so much as I would call it an accused's "choice" to falsely give a confession because of abusive and overbearing police. She is not just an idiot, who believes he'll stop the torment. Battered women are not just gullible women, who believe their abusers lies. Most are afraid for their lives, or the lives of their children (albeit, Rihanna doesn't have any kids). She probably is fully aware that he'll abuse her again, most women in these situations are. I don't think it was much of her own choice to go back to Chris Brown, much as it never is for a woman, who's been beaten repeatedly, to go back to her abuser.
I've volunteered at several women's centres, and many of the women who have been in similar situations, always go back to their abusers. They never do so willingly, but under psychological coercion.
I don't care if you all disagree with me, but from my own experience, this is what happens in violent relationships. This isn't something she's doing because she's an idiot, or because she's gullible.
I think it's bullshit that this particular article was even written from that point of view. First of all how many of those kids between 12-19 are highly educated. Which means are pretty well rounded individuals who actually do their homework and write essays on wolrdly affairs, not just dedicating their lives to mtv and and the more trivial things in life. I am a high school English teacher and have already requested guest speakers and assemblies on Domestic Violence. This is all the kids have been talking about and I ran into the same attitudes from both girls and boys. They said she must have done something to get that and acted like it was normal. I have been discussing it in my classes until I am blue in the face to try and get it through this generation's heads that it is NEVER okay for a male to put his hands on a female in a violent way ever! Plus, the girls initially did not want to believe that Chris Brown would do something like that. Now, they cannot ignore the police report.
