You should read about what the Catholic Church did here in Brazil. A 9 year old girl was raped but her stepdad and got pregnant with TWINS!!! Since her body could not handle this pregnancy, the goverment said she could have an abortion. So a couple of priests wanted to file a lawsut to avoid this.

In this case, it's not about morality or religions It's a MEDICAL issue. And he's right! Condoms, though they prevent pregnancy and other STDS, DO NOT STOP THE HIV VIRUS! It's been proven that the virus is too small to be stopped by a condom, which is why condoms have warnings that state clearly that they cannot be used to stop the transmission of HIV.

You know, the Pope IS taking a moronic stance on this issue. Science is prevailing on this issue and condoms will prevent AIDS; abstinence would be great in preventing the spread of this disease, but you can't tell an entire continent to stop having sex out of wedlock because it goes against the religious teachings that most of those people don't believe in. Abstinence only teaching don't even work in developed countries… if it did, why would we have so many teen pregnancies? The catholic church is alienating a lot of people and if they wan't to stay relevant, they need to amend their ridiculous stance on a lot of issues; having faith in Jesus, Mary and other catholic preachings has nothing to do with birth control.
This is why so many of us 'raised Catholic' leave the church…its stuck in the Middle Ages.

However, Africa is the Catholic Church's largest growing area and I don't think it could hurt them. Africa is noturious for treating women as sexual object who, for example, deserve to be raped for dressing certain ways. They believe in voodoo and black magic. A recently read an article about a goat that was being held in jail because they believe the goat was a car robber who changed form to excape persecution.
On St. Patrick's Day (a Roman-Britain born missionary TO Ireland), maybe we could take some time to acknowledge that the Catholic Church has historically been a force of "education" and "civility." We could debate those good and bad of that until we are blue in the face, but I don't think that the influence of the stale and stuffy, overly-structured church could be a really terrible thing.

Condoms alone don't solve the problems surrounding HIV/AIDS but education about how STIs and STDS are contracted and prevented- which includes condoms/safer sex practices and abstinence- has proven successful… In this world wether you're in Africa, Europe, Asia, the U.S., etc… education minus the injection of religious/moral preference is not only ideal, it's necessary. What ever happened to promoting intelligent free will and the value of, generally speaking, love?

People are going to have sex. It's part of life.. It's what creates new life. Middle School aged kids are having sex now. Probably even younger. You are NOT going to stop people from having sex. However, if you teach them about disease, and make them aware of what a condom is and how to use it, male and females condoms alike, you're more likely to slow the disease from spreading.

I'm not Catholic but I don't believe he was wrong for what he said. The bible says not to have sex before marriage, that is what he believes. Truthfully, abstinence is the only way to protect yourself from HIV/AIDS. I think that the line shouldn't have been drawn between teaching kids protection over abstinence. They should inform kids of protection but lead kids towards abstinence and teach them love. That's what is really wrong.. the absence of love.

What rules have been updated? I have been raised Catholic. I am not a "stereotyipical" Catholic, meaning - I had a baby before I was married and was then divorced 8 years later. The church's teachings have been the same since the beginning and do not change. Perhaps you are trying to find reasons to hate.
My religion is not perfect, and neither is the pope, but he is the voice of our faith and has not done anything to warrant the amount of hate that he recieves!

The Catholic Church and the Pope are seriously losing what's left of their relevancy. I mean, fuck, this is the 21st century, deal with it. It's true that the use of condoms isn't gonna resolve the AIDS epidemics altogether, but it certainly helps. This isn't the Middle-Ages, you old fuck, sexual intercourse is not a crime. Because it is 2009, does that mean that it's OK to kill, steal, covet, or have sex before marriage? The year doesn't matter and if there's nothing wrong with it, why are there STDs and unwanted pregnancies?
