Sadly, even family friends of Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson have given up hope, People has confirmed.
One close friend to 45-year-old Richardson described the situation as "There is no chance… It is a fact that her heart is beating but she is brain dead."
So, so sad.
The actress' condition has been described by doctors as a "leakage of blood between the brain and skull," with Richardson's family soon facing the decision on whether or not they should continue to administer medical assistance.
Friends have confirmed that "It's not official yet, but they basically will detach her."
Richardson was flown from Canada to New York with husband Neeson by her side yesterday to allow family and friends their chance to say goodbye to the severely injured Natasha.
Heartbreaking.
Our hearts and thoughts go out to her entire family.

Re: jimmyjazz – If you've never faced the decision to take someone off life support it seems like it would be difficult, but when you faced with it, it's not as hard as you think. We had to take my dad off of life support. He had made it clear when he was alive that he didn't want to ever be on life support and seeing him in that bed, I knew that that wasn't my father there anymore. The dr. said he was brain dead and there was no hope. He died 3 hours after taking him off. We were able to donate his corneas.

Um, people need to educate themselves on BRAIN INJURIES. The signs & symptoms vary, from slight confusion to a headache. It's very important to go to the ED and get a CT of your brain asap if you hit your head/fall & hit your head, etc..
If she has actually been declared brain dead, then it's just a matter of time before they will take her off the ventilator. The only reason they would keep her on & alive is to see if she has any organs she can donate. That must be what they're doing.
The only good thing is that she is a healthy young woman who probably has a great heart that someone could use.

The family stated on Tuesday that they would release a statement today. They will remove her from life support today and release that statement. So sad. I really enjoyed her work. You gotta be careful people!!!

Miracles DO happen. There is often a rush to harvest organs and a grim prognosis offered to convince the family to pull the plug. My friend had botched brain surgery that resulted in a stroke. she was in a coma for 6 months. The doctors said,based on her MRI, that she would never be able to think again. They were WRONG! She woke up. She slowly made progress and began to read and write until she passed from the brain tumor. They should allow time and give this poor women a chance to let her miracle kick in. These things take time and they should give her a chance. My heart goes out to her and her friends and family.

Re: Shakermaker – Hi, I'm a 4th yr med student and I just wanted to let you know that it sounds like she has something called an epidural hematoma. Basically you rip an artery in your brain after a fall or blow to the head. The person is usually lucid for a period of time after the event and then slowly goes into unconsciousness. Even if she was taken to the hospital and operated on within an hour, this injury causes rapid bleeding in the brain and it is very possible for a person to undergo serious brain damage in a short amount of time.
If this is true, it's really sad. It keeps making me think of Liam Neeson's role in Love Actually and how it starts with him at the funeral of his wife.

It was reported here that the ski instructor wanted her to go to the hospital, but she said she was fine and insisted on going back to her hotel. It says the instructor accompanied her back to her hotel room, where she later began complaining of headaches and saying she wasn't feeling well. At that point, the hotel called 911. The actress was conscious between her fall and the time she left the hotel, and a police spokesperson tells ET that she continued to maintain consciousness on the ambulance ride to the hospital.
this is so so horrible and sad. she seemed a very genuinely sweet and gentle person. i feel the worst for her kids, those poor boys.
