Anne Hathaway To Play Judy Garland On Both Stage And Screen

Anne Hathaway is set to portray the legendary Judy Garland on both the silver screen and stage.
Adapted from Gerald Clarke's 2000 biography, Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, the Weinstein Co. will be expertly producing both projects.
If Princess Anne can manage to swing it (and we think she can!), she stands to garner both an Oscar and a Tony nod. Though twice nominated, Garland never won an Oscar, apart from an honorary award after her death. Nor did she ever appear on Broadway.
And, as we've already established, Annie can sing!

One again you get it wrong-July Garland won the honorary Oscar 30 years before her death:
In 1939, she was awarded an honorary one for her timeless performance in "The Wizard of Oz."
She's fantastic, I think she'll do a great job…although there can never be a Judy Garland again at least they picked someone with true talent to play her.

Although, to be realistic, Anne would have to get her drink on.
Judy Garland used to go drinking with my grandpa and he said that she could drink him under the table.
She's no Judy Garland, but she does have a good voice as we heard at the Oscars. Perhaps with some training she can get better to properly do Judy justice. BTW, Anne is looking fabulous these days - great choices in clothes and great hair & makeup. She does need to upgrade the loser boyfriend though…
She really is the new Julia Roberts, well deserved!

actually, she was given a special juvenile Oscar for "The Wizard of Oz". It was a mini-statue and was presented by Louis B. Mayer.
She is lovely and such a great actress..

Re: stefystef – I so agree!!! The reason "Ma vie en rose" was amazing was partly the fact that Marion Cotillard resembled Edith Piaf… Judy was all about raw energy, being different, being mad with talent!
I like Anne, but she is a tall XXI century glamazon, who in no way can portray with justice what Judy meant to some of us. I say this because I resemble Judy physically - I´ve been told many times - and only us petites can portray the sheer energy needed to get attention when you holler from below!
I remember when they cast Jennifer Love Hewitt to play Audrey Hepburn biopic… Same mistake!

Judy appeared on Broadway. She did sold out concert runs for weeks at a time at The Palace. And PS, has anyone read "Get Happy"??? Very interesting book. Could make an interesting film. There are some scandalous stories about Judy (obviously) and many other celebrities during her time. There's one story involving oral sex and the song Over the Rainbow, which has haunted me ever since I read it. I don't even think that story should have been included in the book. Ish!

Although Anne is a classically trained soprano and can sing very well I doubt she'll be singing without at least some blending with Judy's voice because those pipes were unique! Like Marion Cotillard mimed in La Vie en Rose because of Edith Piaf's special voice.
Re: MichLuv – k.. fascinating. to me, a biopic just seems like an excuse for an actor to imitate another person in the hopes of getting the Oscar they are so desperate for. Ray, Walk the Line… countless others if i want to know about the life of Judy Garland, i'll look it up on wikipedia.

A) Judy won an honoray Oscar for Oz,(B) The Palace Theater IS on Broadway(C) Anne has a soporano voice, Judy was a belter. Not gonna sound so hot, think Jennifer Hudosn trying to sing opera.
Re: Lady Astor – You are so right, Lady Astor. It was Judy's petiteness that made her so vunerable, but powerful. That incredible voice coming out of that little body would give me shivers, seriously.
And when Judy got older and her voice was so raspy and yet, so powerful that she could outsing even a young Barbara Straisand.
Anne is not the "fit" for Judy. Right on, Lady Astor!!!

JUDY DAVIS did an incredible acting job in a 2001 TV movie about Judy Garland called Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows and won an Emmy for it. This was a warts and all biopic, so I hope Anne Hathaway does the same. Her life was fascinating!

If she does, she'll have to watch for channelling Garland after hours. It wasn't always a very happy story. She'll need to get out and have some real fun to block the spiral, because I think Ann is in a vulnerable place. Tall or not, she could do an amazing job in this role. I feel it.
Legendary Judy Garland? Judy Garland was a mediocre actress and even worse singer. She was also a drug addict (which should in no way detract from her admittedly meager contribuitions to the performing arts world, but just saying). So why is she legendary?

JUDY DAVIS has already played Garland so mesmerisingly in the movie 'Me and My Shadow' that there is no way her performance can be topped - even Meryl Streep mentioned the brilliance of Davis' performance in her speech when she accepted a golden globe for Angels in America - good luck Anne you'll need it
a judy garland film has already been made. but it wasnt a motion picture release. it was a tv movie. but a good one with judy davis. i'm interested to see this. i just finished the book 'get happy' it was fabulous. anne does have the garland eyes though, but regardless no actress they hire will sing over judy garlands original recordings. no one sings better then judy. so it wont even be anne we'll here, it'll be judy. anyway, this seems cool.
