Getting Even More Expensive To Live in NYC!
Filed under: Business BlitzThe MTA just announced that they are going to be increasing fares AND also cutting back services!
The fare hikes - including an increase in the base subway and bus fare to $2.50, from $2 - will take effect on May 31.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority claims that the fare hikes and service cutbacks are needed to keep the transit system from going broke.
Uh huh!

That's nothing I live in Nova Scotia and they have been $2.50 for along time, no buses after 11pm.

In Ottawa it Costs $3.00 to take the bus. And we just had a 70 some odd day bus strike. Where we had NO busses at all. Public Transit Sucks.

Their finances are a wreck. In Philadelphia, they are struggling to keep their libraries open. No one moved to NY thinking it's going to be cheap though.

Ugh that's so irritating, the fare has gone up or changed completely about five times since I was seven. I've lived in NYC all my life and nothing is really different, it takes the same amount of time to get places and the MTA have cut a bunch of useful bus services. It's just sad, because there's nothing we can do about it other than suffer. I still have to get to work. Fuckery in the NYC.

I live in NYC and this raise is a raise we dont need right now. The trains are always late, crowded, dirty and filled with bums. The train stations stink most times. Not to mention the smell of people on buses. Ugh this sux big time
Every major city run by demorats is a crap-hole. DC, Detroit, NYC, LA, Atlanta, Memphis. If you drive through Jackson, Mississippi be sure you have plenty of gas and good tires. Whatever you do, don't stop for any reason.

Hell, we're already way above that in DC . . . and ever since John Catoe took over, its been a disaster.
Here's the real rub - MTA is upping the unlimited ride card from $81 for 30 days to $103 for 30 days. That is extremely difficult for anyone living her in the city, namely because the $81 is tough enough. We still have to get to work. In other cities - Chicago, Philly, Toronto, etc - they have high fares because it's still possible to own a car. Here, it is absolutely impossible to keep your car on the island. New York county (Manhattan) is the smallest county in the United States, and yet, its one of the most expensive places to live. Our schools/health care/jobs are being cut by Gov. Patterson… blind asshole.

Country people ride on the coat tails of the urban centers — they are provided roads, electrical lines, phone lines, public schools — all of which could NEVER be paid for out of the paulty taxes paid by these same country people.

Something like 80% of the subway is financed by tax dollars, yet they spend $5k on every turnstile and who knows how many millions of dollars per year on a system designed to keep track of who has paid and who hasn't. The MTA is one of the most corrupt, mismanaged systems in the world, and it is time they stop hiding behind this 'our system is the only one that runs 24/7' convenience mantra. Every other system in the world shuts down at night for a few hours of maintenance. It seems our system uses it as an excuse for sub-par service during the day. Please, please shut the system down at 3am for repairs (Carrie Bradshaw wannabes can pay for a taxi if they want to stay out that late) so that I don't have to wait 30 minutes for the train to arrive for Saturday errands. FCK THE MTA!
Again the working people are shit upon and have to pay for mismanagement of funds. I would really love to organize a boycott (I know this is almost impossible because people NEED to take public transportation to go to work). At least one day where we walk and bike to work might show that we do have power because right now, we appear helpless and the MTA can do anything they want. People that use public transportation should be rewarded for not polluting the world like everyone with their fucking gas guzzlers.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! How can the NYC transit system be going broke when millions of people use it every day? And if they are, shouldn't the government help them out? It is embarassing that just getting around one's hometown is so pricey now.

what the hell is the uh huh for you jackass? you know something about the mta the rest of us don't ? they certainly are not lining the pockets of their employees. My husband has been a mechanic for the mta-subway division for 10 years, and yes, I am grateful he still has a job, but if he gets a raise, it is normally 1%, a few years it has been 0%, once he got a whopping 2%. he took a civil service test and made supervisor last year and his pay want down about $10k for the year-no overtime and on top of it, he had to take the bronx to work and goes over the throgs neck-another $200 a month and yes, it is a mta bridge, but not his division, so he pays, no discount. so no uh huh perez, no lower people make it at the mta, the ones running it, YES, and it is a state business, so we are not talking about stockholders.
fuck that… $2 is too much to pay for that hellhole ride in the first place.. fuck the subway it pisses me off so much

Canadian currency has a different value than that of the US and if you lived in NY and had to experience the overcrowding, late trains and buses and all the service interruptions on a DAILY basis, you would be pretty pissed off too.
Plus for college students like me, this is gonna affect me greatly.. especially $103 for a monthly metro card.

Wow, where is all the money going? I dont understand. I live in NYC, and teh trains are GROSS! In all other cities, they are so much cleaner… and the fair is reasonable… why would NYers want to pay 250 to travel in a contaminated box anyways… this is sooo retarded.. I HATE THE MTA!
I'm 47 years old and I grew up in NYC. I remember when I was a kid it only cost 20 cents to ride the busses and subways in New York. Makes me feel old!
