Vatican To Boycott Tom Hanks!
With so many problems in the world, we find it funny the Vatican has time to focus on this nonsense!
Tom Hank's latest flick, Angels & Demons, based on the best-selling novel by Dan Brown, is receiving strong opposition from the Vatican.
According to Avvenire, the Vatican's official newspaper, the church "cannot approve" the film. Another Italian newspaper claims the Vatican will soon call for Catholics worldwide to boycott the flick.
However, Archbishop Velasio De Paolis is worried that boycotting the movie will create a "boomerang effect" by giving it more publicity.
Guess the Pope and his posse are still bothered by the fact that the book and movie suggested Jesus had secretly married that "whore", Mary Magdalene.

Even last year, while filming, the Vatican banned filmmakers from entering the Holy City or any church in Rome really. So one of the movie's key scenes, set inside church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, had to be filmed on a soundstage.
According to a Vatican spokesman, Father Marco Fibbi, he said, "Usually we read the script but in this case it wasn't necessary. Just the name Dan Brown was enough."
The flick hits theaters worldwide this May 15th.

I saw the trailer for this the other day, and it seems entertaining. I'm sick of seeing the same movie over and over again. This kind of risqué move is exactly the kind of movies Hollywood should be making. Safe movies are boring. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this one.

How does the Vatican knows the plot of this story and why do they care. People have their own moral compass; if you don't want to see a movie, don't see it. The more the Vatican complain the more people will want to see it; that's the nature of a lot humans. Personally, I'm not interested in seeing it nor did i see or read the DiVinci Code. The Catholic church has been around for thousands of years and has the largest charitable organization in the world- Catholic Charities. The church has never waivered from its beliefs and if you don't agree then don't be a Catholic. I am a proud Catholic and are church is always full. In regards to The DaVinci Code, I technically don't understand the big whoop. The whole issue is the thought of Christ having a child, but in the movie it also proclaims that Christ was married, therefore Christ did not commit a sin, so whether the movie has truths or not, it shouldn't be such an issue as it was.
I'm sure if a book saying nasty things about Judaism, maybe, say denying the Holocaust, wanted to film in Israel, it would not be supported and be denounced. And if a book blaspheming the Koran wanted to do some 'on location' shoots in Kabul, somebody would be dead. So spare us the 'outrage' over this - after the (horribly written) craptapulous insult to Catholicism that Brown's books have been, it's no wonder the Vatican won't spport the film. Duh!

I get where the Vatican is coming from. The people saying that the church should concern itself with more pressing matters are right, but at the same time, since so many people are getting reality confused with fantasy, they are trying to keep this from becoming a reality in many peoples minds. However, the way they are going about it is all wrong. By basically forbidding catholics to watch it, they cause people to in fact go watch it. What the church needs to do, if anything, is issue a statement saying that what you see is NOT what the church believes, and it is heretic to think otherwise. I am very catholic, but when the first statement was issued urging a boycott of the film, the first thing I did was go to see it. It is an intriguing subject, and the matter at hand is whether you can view this topic without thinking that it is reality. If you feel that that is actually what happened than fine, but if you are a rooted catholic, than seeing this will not cause those roots to be uprooted. You just have to look at the matter subjectively.

The book was good. Wasn't great. I think all the publicity both hollywood and Vatican is to draw attention to each side's cause. By "cause" I mean the fictional aspect from hollywood, and it just pissed off the Vatican so they have to "ban" it. I read the damned thing 3 years ago or more, after the DaVinci Hype 'cuz DaVinci was so damned good. MHO- Vatican is upset that more ppl are interested in fictional works that make them look bad, rather than in the works or propaganda depedinging on your view. Both A&D and DVC are great for starting debate and conversation about Christianity - I find them really useful and regard them as fiction but with an interesting twist. I am a die hard Protestant and very suspicious of the Vatican/Pope so perhaps not the best to comment really!

Avvenire is just a Catholic newspaper. (owned by the group of Italian bishops.) It's kind of like saying "the Pittsburgh Catholic" is the official newspaper of the Vatican. See the difference.
Everyone has the right to decide whether they like something or not. The Vatican decided that they don't like the movie. It's a good idea to have critical thinking skills. Not everything out there in the world is good or good for you.
