On Monday, a Malawian judge held a closed-door court hearing with Madonna regarding her application to adopt 3-year-old Mercy.
The hearing was adjourned until Friday.
Mercy's grandmother is causing a stink at the prospect of Madonna adopting the baby.
Why?????
The child is currently living in an orphanage - and has been for YEARS! A life living with Madonna and little David and Rocco and Lola would be so much better than being parentless, no??????

Living with Madonna isn't necessarily better than living in an orphanage. Her family seems dysfunctional to me. She has also stolen a baby before - David. This was totally unacceptable. Anyone who would do that is not fit to be a parent, which no one seems to recognize.
There's lots of things on both sides I just don't get, but the main one is if the kid is in a orphanage and the grandmother cares SO much, why isn't the grandmother helping to keep the child out of the orphanage? Isn't a kid that's left to rot unwanted better off adopted even to Madonna? Left to nannies is a better fate than left future less.

Try reading the entire article. The kid is supposed to live in the orphanage until she turns sick, then she is to go live with her grandparents. Yes, Madonna has money but why take the kid away from living family members so she can be raised by nannies? Why not get a kid that has no living relatives? Seeing how high the orphan rate is, I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem.
Just because you have money, doesn't mean you get everything you want. Look at all the rich people with fucked up kids - the list is endless. Ending with Joe Biden's kid as of today.

Would it be better? Madonna is notorious for leaving the children with nannies for most of the time. HOW is that different (parenting wise) than an orphanage? The child would need a lot of loving, physically and emotionally, to overcome the orphanage background. Madonna's lifestyle doesn't seem to fit the bill. And furthermore, the child may already have an inability to bond and thrive, if she's been in an orphanage for years. Children aren't dolls that you can dress up. They have REAL physical and emotional needs which need to be met or else they can be forever damaged.
And PS: If Mercy already has a grandmother, why is she in an orphanage?
not if the "parent" you will have is someone that will never be there, will be too busy to help the child properly adjust to what will be a huge culture shock, and has no stable home life whatsoever. This will quite possibly damage the child more than living in an orphanage. This orphanage takes care of her, it is where she is familiar and loved. She has her extended family that can visit her and know her. She needs to stay there. Adopting in Malawi is ILLEGAL anyhow. This is completely inappropriate for Madonna to do this - she obviously feels entitled. All this "Save Malawi" shit is for looks and to get her in the good graces of the people of that country.

The grandma has said the arrangement was always that she would take custody of Mercy back from the orphanage when she was 6. If Madonna wants to adopt an orphan then fine but maybe go for one with no family instead

Why can't she adopt a child right here in the US?! There are so many in need here. She gains a lot publicity for doing it overseas and it's trendy in Hollywood to adopt a child in a foreign country. You have to wonder if her intentions are truly honorable. In Malawi they also don't allow adoptions with a single parent….interesting that it's being overlooked here.

there are many ethical reasons to leave the child in its home country where it does indeed have family around, even if it's not mom and dad. it is important for the child to be kept within its culture, if possible
