In Memoriam

On March 31st, 1995, the life of singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was tragically cut short when she was brutally murdered by a crazed business associate.

Fourteen years later, she still remains the Queen of Tejano music.

Her memory lives on!

Check out a lovely Selena tribute (above).

Only the good die young…R.I.P. Selena ♥♥

  11. 11

Thank you for posting this! Selena's legacy opened many doors for current Latin stars, especially women. She was the only truly successful female in the male dominated genre of Tejano music and her loss was a great one for our community. Her story resonated with many Latinos who are proud of their bicultural heritage and are striving to make positive contributions to this world. It would be wonderful if you would encourage your viewership to donate to her foundation that "[offers] the motivation that every child needs to complete their education, to live moral lives, to love their families, to respect human life and to sing whatever song they were born to sing."

Also, if you would so kindly call to light that her boutique in Corpus Christi is closing and they have all but abandoned her memorial statue in the city. It's a travesty to an entertainer who left a lasting mark on popular music today.

  12. 12

Selena was awesome! Loved her music!!! Thanks for posting about her Perez!

  13. 13

    She is greatly missed!

  14. 14

Thanks so much for posting this Perez, im tearing up after watching it. We still love and miss you Selena!

  15. 15

Selena will forever live on…without Selena there would be no J.Lo…

  16. 16

When Selena died it was a national week of mourning for anyone tuned into Telemundo, or Univision. She was really popular among latino americans, and in Texas overall.

The movie is one of my favorite movies of all tie. Very well done, except the end when she's killed, could've done more with that.

Selena was a distinct beauty, even among the Mex-Amer. Community.

  17. 17

Thank you for posting this video Perez. I have admired Selena since I was a little girl. We miss her! Rest in Peace Sel!

  18. 18

    so tragic.
she should've had the career JLo has…except that Selena actually had talent and would've been more popular and critically acclaimed.
also one of the first celebrities to launch her own fashion line, before it became the thing to do.
    what might've been…

  19. 19

Re: jennie888 – You got that right.

  20. 20

    I Love Selina tooooo! snif…snif…

  21. 21

viva la reina, i wish she were still here to show young wannabes how to work it.

  22. 22

rest in peace Selena!!!! we still love you!!!

  23. 23

    ^^^^^^

    95% of non-latino Americans.

    Come correct bitch!

Selena was too busy dominating the spanish speaking countries, and had she been able to finish her English album she then would have conquered the English speaking mainstream.

So go be "insensitive" and stupid elsewhere please

    Thanks!

  24. 24

Thank you for posting that Perez :) It was a really nice way to remember such a beautiful person.

    ♥♥Thanks Perezzz.Selena is in my heart today♥♥

  26. 26

I knew you would remember her today, Perez! She gave us so much in her short 23 years…. Her legacy is not just beautiful music, but also her sweetness, kindness, humility, compassion, and her ability to forgive.

  27. kian says – reply to this

    27

it's a real pitty not having her with us nowadays, she would have been a Big Star round the world, with that talent, and that beautiful voice! One of the greatest artist that I've ever met.

her light faded away just when she began to get airplay in US. "Dreaming of you" is one of the most beautiful songs.

Selena, we will remember you forever.

  28. 28

I was just talking with a co-worker about listening to her music. She said she tried to learn spanish to sing along. We miss you Selena!

  29. 29

i still remembered when she died my whole family was a fan of hers i was only five yrs old when she died but i cried, may she RIP

  30. 30

    RIP SELENA
    Miss you, LOVE you!

  31. 31

Weird… I just found her CD today and was listening to it all morning! Such a terrible loss. She had the voice of an angel.

  32. 32

We will always remember her smile and booty! Sandy Vive!

  33. Laury says – reply to this

    33

I didn't know her music when she was alive but I saw her biopic (the only movie where I can actually say JLo did a good job) and it made me want to learn more about her. She reminds me of Aaliyah, they both died before they could become superstars. So sad.

  34. 34

This is sad. I love selena so much and I think she's a great loss.

  35. 35

    R.I.P~Selena! You'll always be missed!!

  36. 36

What a wonderful women and performer. She will always be missed.

  37. 37

i just love how you bring out the latino side in you not many people pay tributes to tejano stars i used to dance to her music :) … its a shame that the radio stations down here in texas rarely play her music

  38. KiKA says – reply to this

    38

Selena forever, u'll be forever missed and thought of. She was and still is my favorite singer of all time. =(

  39. 39

I live in Corpus Christi, as did Selena. I remember seeing her on the news going to schools to sing and perform charity functions. She was a lovely young woman and a real class act. Today, 14 years later, I know that many kids at school today will be wearing t-shirts in rememberance of her. Many of these kids were not even born when she was killed. Her family has remained here and have maintained a dignified silence. She will always be remembered in this community. Rest in peace Selena.

  40. 40

why are all latinas called selena??
not very original for the gomez one lolll

  41. 41

RIP…she truley was a wonderful person and is still greatly missed by her community. It's tragic that the same can't be said for her dispicable greedy father and brother, who after 14 yrs are still shamelessly riding the coat tails of Selena's name. She was no doubt the true and only talent in that family.

  42. 42

Thank you for this tribute. Long live Selena.

  43. 43

Thank you for posting Perez. She was truly and amazing woman and talent.

  44. 44

OMG she is my idol…love this girl…I cried so much and I always remember this day on her behalf. She was a beautiful person always sweet with a huge smile all the time…she always had time to greet and sign autographs….never angry if the papzz where after her…OH…what a sad loss to all…she opened the big door to Jennifer Lopez..(she should be thanking her all her life for this!!) and she had a great voice and very talented….Love you Selena….

  45. 45

AWWW perez you put this?? awwww melts my heart.

  46. 46

Enough with her in her death , let her rest in peace!

  47. 47

RIP home girl… we miss you much!!!
ugh so much talent! its so sad!!!! ughhhh i can't believe it's already been 14years!

  48. 48

    I love Selena!

  49. 49

    Re: DSummerfan

If you dont like Selena then why bother posting on this story?

    Get a life

  50. 50

Never knew who she was until she was killed. It is really a shame, Her English CD was great and I really think she would have been a huge breakout artist with her Spanish/English songs and I think that she would also have stayed popular in the tejano scene. Again, such a sad shame.

  51. 51

When you pos sweet things like this makes me think that you are not all that vile. Thanks, Perez! I miss Sel!

  52. 52

Such a tragic day…if it weren't for that day we wouldn't have JLo :::sigh:::

Serously, this girl was very down to earth and simple, not very common in celebrities. She is still missed.

  53. 53

awww she was always smiling and laughing i think that was the saddest thing to come of her death, the silence. she did a lot for the hispanic community and she was a great role model. today's 'role models' don't come like this anymore.
    r.i.p selena

  54. 54

Some of you non latinos who are criticizing her get a freakin life she would of been the first shakira, j lo, thalia, etc. if her english album would of come out when she was alive. She was the first to try a cross over and have a clothing line get a fucking life Many american latinos knew who she was and latinos are a huge population in the u.s.

  55. 55

There is a great movie "Selena" with Jennifer Lopez about her, I watched it so many times…

  56. 56

I love her!!! She was so awesome and beautiful and real! Always a Selena fan.

  57. 57

It is unbeliveble how much time has pass since she die, I miss her a lot. She was one of the best singers.
    Selena Vive in my heart

  58. 58

I love Selena! I remember when I was little I was such a huge fan of hers! I would have really loved her music today if she were still around! Just think.. instead of writing stuff about Lady Gaga, you could be writing about Selena! So sad!

  59. 59

Besides her amazing voice - she also had an infectious smile.
    Such a loss ;(

  60. 60

RIP Selena. You will forever be irreplaceable!

  61. A Rod says – reply to this

    61

Truly a star that was taken away too early. We miss you, Selena!!!

  62. 62

    I remember that day,miss her..RIP!!

  63. 63

She left a beautiful legacy….to bad that after her death her SOULESS father and VILE P.O.S brother have brought nothing but embarrassment to her name. It's always been very obvious that the only thing they care about is profiting off of her. I have seen A.B Quintanilla around town many more times than I care to count over the years, and he acts like the HUGEST entitled A-HOLE….and when people call him on it he actually has the nerve to say "Don't you know who I am?…I'm Selena's brother"….by the way, that is also what he told most of the Ex-Kumbia King members after years of wondering where their paychecks were….some have yet to see a dime…and about 5yrs ago her father threw a screaming hissy fit in the middle of an H.E.B grocery store because they had put Selena T-shits on sale…."How dare they!" he yelled, and demanded that store manager revert the T-shits to the original price. Her father and brother are nothing more than thuggish conniving thieves.

  64. 64

has it really been 14 years? dang, i feel old.

Selena, you were so beautiful and amazing; the world got to see your talent even in death! you're never forgotten!!

  65. 65

today is my BDAY. Bitter sweet day for me.
    RIP selena.

  66. 66

I hate to say this, no wait, Im not!! Her parents are the ones to blame for her not being here!!! They should have allowed the blood transfusion she needed to live!! God is all the same no matter the religion and EVERYONE knows that God forgives everything and anything except for suicide!!!! There, I said it!!

  67. 67

    i luv u selena

  68. 68

    Re: luvyaP

Please do some research before making an ass of yourself.

Selena was given blood DESPITE her father's protests, the doctors were trying to do whatever it took to save her but the damage had been done. Her artery was damaged beyond repair and the blood just kept coming out, she died from blood loss but she was given blood!

  69. 69

Selena was my first childhood idol. I was five years old when she passed. I still listen to and love her music.

    RIP bb

  70. 70

She's so beautiful. You can tell she really loved and enjoyed life. God bless.

  71. 71

Please don't say mean things about Selena's beloved family on this, her Angel Day. Selena adored her family.

  72. 72

She died so young because she was too good to be true; she was perfect, you know? Thanks for putting this up though, it's the only place I've seen that has recognized her.

  73. 73

Hoy es un dia muy triste para la musica hispana. A great promise gone too soon. Rest in peace, Selena….

  74. 74

    I (heart) Perez for this . . .

    :)

I'll never forget how I found out.

  75. 75

i will always love selena , she will always be the best …may she RIP

  76. 76

    aww i loved selena!
    won't ever forget.

  77. 77

i remember the film with jen,it made me sob….all because of some horrible ugly old women

  78. 78

Re: PaLady – It is ture, Selena adored her family…they ment everything to her….but her family only saw her as a MEAL TICKET. Perhaps that is why God took her so soon…to save her from those horrible people…they didn't deserve her.

  79. 79

    I LOVE YOU SELENA!!!

  80. 80

Selena Always In My Life N Heart!!
She Will Always Be Loved N Missed!!
    I Love You Selena!!!!

  81. 81

what a loss, she really was talented like someone said below, would have definitely had JLo's career, given Shakira a run for her money.

I'm confused now about this song, it's obviously the same as "Back on the Chain Gang" by the Pretenders, and I think they wrote it so did Selena change it or was theirs a cover of an earlier song?

  82. 82

    R.I.P Selena.

  83. 83

    long live selena!
    i love you mami

  84. 84

J Lo did a very good job portraying her. It sucks she went the way that she did so soon and I hope the person who killed her is rotting, but she seemed to live whatever time she had on this earth to the fullest. She's truly is one of God's angels.

  85. 85

Oh YAWN! She's so OVER — this is just another piece of FILLER for your stupid blog space so you don't have to actually work for a living. I'm surprised you don't have a DAILY: Who died today in history - feature, just to take up more space. OH, I suppose you're going to do that NOW!

  86. 86

Si, nunca nunca te olvidaremos!!!Nunca mas o alguien como tu!!!!!!LOVE YOU 4 EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!y que viva la latinidad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ALi WOLFF

  87. 87

  89. 89

I love Selena, n i will never forgive myself for being sick the day she came to my city do to a concert and i couldn't go…it was the first and last time she came to Fresno…the bitch that killed her better not ever come out!…R.I.P SELENA

  90. 90

I love you Selena…you'll never be forgotten!

  91. 91

    aww miss her

  92. 92

Thank you so much for paying a tribute to her she truly was and still is an inspiration for many of us!!!

    We love you Selena!!!!! XOXOXOX

  93. 93

she wasn't "brutally murdered," she was shot. Fairly clean…..I think a "brutal murder" is what happened to Matthew Shephard, Daniel Pearl, and Gacy's victims. Brutal is 100 stab wounds, or ligature, or poor Jean-Benet.

avoid adverbs; they dilute the text. "tragically cut?" jeez…..

  94. 94

I still get chills everytime I hear her music. Such a awful loss of such a beautiful person. Her smile is precious and so contagious. RIP Selena

  95. 95

I AM STILL CELEBRATING YOU ALWAYS SELENA, SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SOUL IN EVERY SINGLE WAY. BEAUTIFUL SMILE, PERSONALITY, AND MUSIC.. THANKS PEREZ FOR POSTING THIS ITS SUCH A SWEET THING TO DO, LETTING EVERYONE KNOW SHE IS GONE BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN..EVER! GOD BLESS THE QUINTANILLA FAMILY!
