American Journalists Detained In North Korea Will Be Tried

Uh-oh, this looks ominous.
On Tuesday, North Korea announced that it would try American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling - Lisa Ling's sister - for "hostile acts" and illegally entering the country.
The official Korean Central News Agency said, "The illegal entry of US reporters into the DPRK (North Korea) and their suspected hostile acts have been confirmed by evidence and their statements."
The agency also said that the pair, who work for California-based Current TV, will be granted consular access and will be tried according to international law. The agency did not, however, specify their "hostile acts," although South Korean reports are saying they could be tried for spying.
The situation also tries relations with North Korea, which is planning to launch a communications satellite that the US believes is just a cover for long-range missile testing.
Kim Yong-Hyun, a North Korea studies professor, surmised that "By starting legal action officially (against the journalists), North Korea revealed its intention to use them for negotiations with the US after the missile launch. North Korea will release them anyway. However it may use them as virtual hostages to deter punitive measures by the US over its launch."
And if the pair are convicted of "hostility crime" they could face prison.

These women weren't stupid. They risked their lives trying to get word out to the world about the horrific conditions in North Korea, which is what happens when the government has too much power. The North Korean people are trapped in a giant prison of a country.

That is some scary stuff. That's why you gotta be careful when you go to other countries as their laws are way different and shoot, they probably make them up along the way. So no matter who you are, how rich you are, there is no getting out of it or even reasoning.

First, as Americans they should know better than to do something like enter N. Korea illegally.
Second, they have no business there as Americans.
Third, being Lisa Lings' sister, she should have been a little more educated on the matter of N. Korean political policies.
I am not saying they are getting what they deserve, but they KNOW, hell EVERYONE KNOWS how things are done in communist N. Korea.
Sometimes we just have to realize, this is the way it is and take things as they are. Those girls are in N. Korea. They will be treated as criminals because in the eyes of Kim Jong-il they are criminals.
They are two stupid girls that should've thought about what they were doing.
None of you people would've cared had these girls not been related to a famous person. People get detained and jailed everyday in foreign countries.

If the crossed in illegaly, then they should be charged. We cannot expect just becasue they are American they can enter a country when they do not have the paperwork to go in. We all know the North Korea is a dangerous place, and their people deserve more, but if we are going to put up a fence to keep the beaners out then how can we expect anything else from another country.

Pretty stupid to enter a hostile country illegally, whether they knew the risk or not. The hostility between USA and North Korea is not going to help them.

Lisa Ling does have a lot of connections and she could use them to bring media attention to her sister but I think she has been advised by wiser people to remain silent on the matter. More media attention is only going to make it worse for her sister. The North Koreans should not be under the impression that they've got important people hostage otherwise they will attempt to use the women as leverage when negotiating.
I don't t know how this is going to end but North Korean prisons make American prisons look like vacation.
