Wow, my mom started LISTENING to Guiding Light on the radio back in the 50s. Then watch when it was on TV.

I watched in the 70s and early 80s because my mom watched. The show was good at one time, but really went downhill in the mid-90s (Kim Zimmer- Reva stayed too long). When they did the Reva-as-a-clone storyline, it was over. The show had jumped the shark.

Anyway, that's another soap down the drain. The era of the Soap Opera (or "stories" as my mom calls them) is over. I think ATWT is next and there will be no daytime soaps on network TV in the next 10 years.

Good! That show was getting pathetic with their low budget sets, to make it seem more "real" lol when really it was just a way to save money.

This is the first of many soaps that will get cancelled soon. Days of Our Lives is in trouble too (hence why they fired a bunch of their cast just to stay afloat)

Longest running soap opera on television? No, maybe on American Television, not television in general. Although I hate to call it a soap opera, Coronation Street has been running since about 1872. The Street is the oldest running "soap opera" on television.

After 72 years, the Guiding Light is about to shine for the last time. In an oddly timed announcement, CBS chose a day usually reserved for practical jokes to announce that it was pulling the plug on television's longest-running scripted series. While efforts are being made to find another home for Guiding Light, for now the show is scheduled to go dark in September.

The final episode of Guiding Light will air on CBS on September 18.

Guiding Light was such a wonderful soap to watch back during its heyday! It hasn't been worth watching much in recent years but boy did it provide loads of entertainment back during its glory years! How sad to see daytime slowly die off like this. GL never got the mainstream press it deserved, because it truly boasted one of the most talented casts in daytime during its best years. RIP GUIDING LIGHT

CORONATION STREET is the longest running television show AND soap opera. It has been on air since 1960, making it nearly 50 years old.
