You know we're experiencing some hard economic times when actors begin selling off their castles in order to "scale back."
Nicolas Cage just sold his 500-year-old Bavarian castle in Germany for a modest $2.3 million.
Apparently, an attorney bought the castle.

I live in a fairly big city and a good size house can goe easily for $1M
He bought an estate down the road from my neighborhood a couple of years ago in New England and it went back on the market about 6 months ago. He owns something silly like 16 properties around the world… I'd try to scale back, too!
The upkeep on your average 500 year old castle is horrendous with turret repairs, replacement crenelations, moat maintenance and all. Today's castles are a lot cheaper to run but probably won't be around in 500 years. Anyone who thinks this is cheap should ask themselves if they are really interested in moving to rural Bavaria. There are plenty of real estate deals around, just not in places where most people want to be. Imagine!

You can buy them in Europe for even MUCH LESS than 2.3 million!! However, normally there s then, when you get them offered exceptionally favorably priced, some legal obligation(!) attacked to the purchase demanding for you to renovate the buildings in compliance with the 'Legal regulations for the protection of cultural heritage' or Landmark protection Law! Which can turn out to be rather EXPENSIVE then in total…

Actually, the region where Mr. Cage had bought the castle is very near where I was born - and it s really one of the most beautiful and most quiet and non-pretentious region in all of Bavaria! Very beautiful landscape with smaller meadows, forests, ponds, small hills (no mountains as in the Alps in Southern Bavaria!)…I guess the region was to "secluded" for Mr. Cage in the end…no GLAMOUR there, no nightlife, no media…
Nicolas Cage is constantly buying and selling real estate. Last year he made a record $10 million off a property in Bel Air. I doubt he's fallen on hard times.

It's in Germany. How much time can an actor spend in Germany between gigs and his other homes in the States? He's not exactly a recluse. Been there, done the castle thing, scale down so there's less to look after. Getting older usually means divesting and making your life more manageable. Elton John sold off warehouses full of his life collection just to feel lighter. Maybe better to do it while you can still remember that you own it!
