Re: STFUP – Why don't you STFUP! I live in West Des Moines, IA… and there are more than 2 people that are gay here.. and there are more than corn fields.

I emailed you this information this morning, Perez… in case you hadn't heard… I'm glad you posted this. My friends are ecstatic!! I am so happy for them. I just married my husband (and I'm female) in Sept… and I'm happy they have the same opportunity now!!

  20. 20

    YES

  21. 21

OK, as a resident of Minnesota, I promise that I will stop making lame Iowa jokes since they seem to be more progressive than my predominately liberal Sate. This is awesome, we will see if it holds up though…

  32. 32

iowa is full of gays.im from there and although im not gay i know lottts of gay people.and they all dont live in cornfields.maybe some but not all.

  33. 33

nothing against iowa but i find it funny that they can accept this but a place as "progressive" as california can't. it fucking sucks. but this is awesome. one step closer.

  34. 34

Of all places, hot damn! Now if only Texas would figure this whole gay thing out… nothing better than a gay cowboy. Whoa bronco… or something like that.

  35. 35

This has made my day! YAY!!

  36. 36

Yes. Finally some really in this world. Could this ever happen in the south where I live, probably not in my lifetime. I don't understand the hate. Why can't everyone be equal? Please…

  37. 37

That's awesome!!!! Woo hoo!!! I'm surprised this happened in the midwest…GO IOWA!!! :)

  38. 38

I'm a proud Iowan and today I am even more proud. BTW - Iowa is not a red state, check your facts.
Perez, you should come visit. You have many fans.

  39. 39

Iowa finally does something that makes me not depressed to be an Iowan

  40. 40

The Supreme Court is going to have to allow it at some point. In the case of interracial marriage, they ruled that marriage is a fundamental civil right, and that the Constitution says that states can not make laws that deny people their civil rights. It is only a matter of time before there is equality for all! I can't believe we still have this discrimination in 2009.

  41. 41

Congrats Iowa, took you only 8 years after my home country of Holland made gay marriage legal….Pfffffff

  42. 42

i give it a week before some religious freak has a shit fit and gets it revoked. i'm suprised it passed at all seeing how conservative my state is.

  43. 43

    Congratulations and THANK YOU, Iowa!

  44. 44

Iowa? I never thought it'd be Iowa first and foremost of all.

    Congratulations, Iowans.

    R-

  45. 45

Why is anyone surprised by this?? It's legal to fuck a sheep in Iowa. GAY ASS SEX FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!

  46. 46

Re: Studmoose – Hey, no talking shit about NJ….

  47. 47

a little fyi for everyone…Iowa is perhaps one of the most liberal states in the entire country. It's funny how so many people from outside the state are surprised by this decision.

Today, unlike any other, I'm proud to say that I'm from Iowa! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!

  48. 48

Woohoo! I'm this much closer to marrying my pet goat! I've always found an attraction to goats since I was 5.

It is time to take our country back. Join a tax day tea party near you. Check online when and where.

    Thank you Jesus!

Re: Hole/Virgin Boy – stupid guy!

  54. 54

It's a FABULOUS day to be an Iowan…and for those that have never been to the Midwest and are judging it from afar, maybe you should step outside of your oblivious bubble and realize there's apparently more going on here than you are aware.

  55. 55

    ONE STEP CLOSER!!!

  56. 56

Iowa just wanted media attention because the state is just plain boring. :p J/K, well about wanting media attention, the state does suck lol. That's good they made it legal. :) I'm in Texas, so I'm sure this will be the very last state to do that lol.

  57. 57

Yay for Iowa…take notes California and follow suit!

  58. 58

I am in Iowa :] This pleasantly surprised me, I did not see them ruling in favor of gay marriage! & to those of you leaving ignorant comments about Iowa being cornfields, and that there is '2 gay people here'. Its quite the contrary to that. Go Iowa!

  59. 59

a totally random state to put a stop to this silly ban… but nonetheless, congratulations to all gay couples in Iowa! Best wishes :)

  60. 60

Re: StyleMistress – DAMN STRAIGHT AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT!!! TEXAS WILL NOT FALL FOR THIS GAY AGENDA BULLSHIT! CIVIL UNIONS BITCHES…STRAIGHTS AND GAYS CAN BOTH HAVE THEM SO THERE IS YOUR "EQUALITY'" FUCKERS! THERE IS NO NEED TO FORCE CHURCHES WHEN CIVIL UNIONS MAKE THINGS EQUAL! GEEZ!
    .
I'M NOT RACIST…I HATE BIDEN TOO!

  61. 61

It should be law in every state.

  62. 62

    Re: STFUP
I know what you mean, BUT: You must see such laws as "marriage is always between man and woman" in the context of their resepective TIME/ERA! At that time, back when those "marriage laws" were established there was officially no such thing as homosexuality!!! They denied it simply exists from birth on. This is why they stipulated in the law it must be a man and a woman! But you must move FORWARD .- nowadays we and science ACCEPTED homosexuality as one form of love, so it s only fair to get them marriage and adoption and tax laws the same as for the heterosexual couples! By the way: I m heterosexual, I guess… :-)

  63. 63

    Re: STFUP
Me, I oppose ANY mariage! So superfluous really - WHY marry when you love someone? Live with them, okay, care for them for a lifetime, okay, but MARRYING them? WHY? …but some people obviously NEED it…and make the divorce attorneys happy! So let the Iowa gays get happy! I m glad to see America finally move forward int he same direction as the rest of the civilized world! :-)

  64. 64

Re: dreamitdoit – That reminds me of the vision a lot of americans on this website have of Germany… it always makes me grin… :-)

    65

Iowa before cali? Are you kidding me. We need it every state let's keep fighting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. 66

As a citizen of the great state of Iowa, I can honestly say that I've never been prouder to be an Iowan! This makes me very happy!!!

  67. 67

I'm so proud of my state right now. THANK YOU IOWA! Just FYI, the soonest this could be overturned (if it is disputed), would be 2012. Because of the way the Iowa Constitution is set up, for the Iowa public to vote to overturn this ruling, it would have to pass in Legislation TWICE to even be put on the ballot. Even then, it won't go on the ballot until the next presidential election. Side note, if any conservative groups tried to appeal this ruling in Iowa, the only place for them to go is up and up is the United States Supreme Court. I very highly doubt anyone wants to appeal to the Supreme Court, because that would end the gay marriage ban on a federal level.

Now please excuse me, I have a wedding to plan.

  68. 68

awesome!! can we ship all gays and lesbians to iowa? just fabulous!!!

  69. MP says – reply to this

    69

    Wow, Iowa. That's something else.

  70. 70

Congratulations, Iowa! Slowly, we're making progress .. there's hope for all 50 states .. can't wait for America to step into the 21st century.

Re: Hot Monkey Love Obama Style Hates Perez – As a lesbian, I'm proud that my state will now recognize my marriage to my partner when we get married. And the churches are privately funded so, no, the state cannot force them to do a damn thing. I don't plan on getting married in a church anyway, since I'm not a Christian. I am an Agnostic and my partner is Wiccan. Why the hell would we get married in a church? What this gives gays and lesbians is the right to get married in a church that recognizes gay and lesbian marriage. To my knowledge, no gays or lesbians are saying that all churches have to allow them to get married there. As taxpaying citizens we want to be recognized as a legal couple. Civil unions are NOT equal. They have a whole separate set of laws that don't come close to marriage. We want the same rights as straight married couples. That is all. We're not on some agenda to force the hands of any churches that don't recognize us. If we are, then I missed that memo.

  74. 74

Wow, maybe the crappy state of Nebraska next door can take a hint! (Where I'm stuck!)

  75. 75

Re: bellakahne – NEVER WILL MANY AMERICANS "RECOGNIZE" GAYS AND LESBIANS AS "MARRIED"! STOP TRYING TO REDEFINE WHAT MANY OF US BELIEVE! THIS ISN'T ABOUT EQUALITY…YOU HAVE THAT! YOU HAVE YOUR OPINION AND I HAVE MINE! LA PUKE!

Re: Wanna Milk Me? – 74 - THE FASTER THEY GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY STATE AND MOVE TO IOWA…THE BETTER!!! :)
    .
I'M NOT RACIST…I JUST OPPOSE GAY "MARRIAGE"!

  77. 77

Isn't IOWA that same backward state that did So Much to get that commie elected?

  78. 78

Re: sleezy*e – Thank you. I love you too. Spread love, not h8.

  79. 79

Re: bellakahne – #78 — Tell it like it is!
    +
We will have to continue to be clear and vigilant in our delivery of the 'church' vs. 'marriage' counterpoint in this debate; NO ONE IS ASKING CHURCHES TO CHANGE THEIR DOCTRINE. And, YES, there are established churches which will be thrilled to honor same-sex marriages for those who seek church-based marriage ceremonies.

  80. 80

Anyone else notice that the only way "gay marriage" is approved is through the courts? As in, not by means of the will of the people, but rather through legislation from politicians and lawyers who have agendas and a desperate need to be politically correct? It is unconstitutional for courts to make social decisions like this..it is the people of each individual state who should have this power.

  81. 81

Re: Hot Monkey Love Obama Style Hates Perez – No one is asking you to change what you believe. No one is asking your church to change what it believes. Gay and Lesbian citizens are asking their state governments to fully consider to whom they give rights and benefits.
    +
In my opinion, what you believe is none of my business. And, by the way you represent yourself, your church has little appeal to me.

  82. 82

Re: Renfamous – It is the duty of all of the courts to uphold the rights given to ALL Americans via the Constitution. Their duty is to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the only reason gay marriage gets to the court is because of the "legislation from politicians and lawyers who have agendas" to keep gays and lesbians from exercising their own inalienable rights.

Why are people so afraid to allow gays and lesbians to marry? What are we doing physically, emotionally, mentally to YOU to make you say that we can no longer have the rights we were born with because we are now out and openly gay? I am asking this question honestly from the bottom of my heart to anyone who will answer, because I DO NOT understand. I would never tell you what you can and can't do in your own home or who you can or can not have a relationship with, so why are you dictating to me? You aren't my family, you don't even know me. How is my relationship with my partner any influence in your life?

  83. 83

Re: Renfamous – Hmmm…my response disappeared. Well, let's try this again. The reason that these rulings get to the court to begin with is because of "legislation from politicians and lawyers who have agendas" to keep gays and lesbians from exercising their own inalienable rights. The duty of the courts is to uphold the Constitution and the rights that ALL Americans receive from it.
    +
This is an open question to anyone who will answer. Why is there so much fear about giving gays and lesbians the right to marry? What are we doing to you physically, emotionally, mentally to make you come into our homes, our relationships and say "No, no, that's wrong. You aren't allowed to marry the one you love."? From the bottom of my heart, I do not understand this. Why do you CARE so much about MY life? Why do you CARE if I marry my partner?

  84. 84

words cannot describe how happy i am….California should follow next, cus if they do all the other major states will too..

  89. 89

I'm from Iowa, not that it matters…I can't understand why anyone would want to get married that bad..but if homosexuals want to be as miserable as everyone else, then I guess I'm happy for them.

  92. 92

Ugh, are you telling me Iowa beat California in progressiveness? Time for California to STEP IT UP!

  93. 93

Re: Duckie – because you can get pregnant and then need someone to care for the child (and you). that's what marriage is for. so it's "unfair" that gays are allowed a common marriage. but i guess you people will never see/learn. just let your lives be ruled by the unnormal. bravo!

  95. 95

I have to admit I do hate living in Iowa however I am glad this passed now hopefully lets see who else will follow. I'm actually shocked this happened here if anything i figured it would be nebraska…. Now you should come visit us Perez!!
