The Vermont Senate and House just voted to override the Governor's veto of the same-sex marriage bill.

Gay Marriage is now legal in Vermont!

Governor Jim Douglas, Republican, promptly vetoed the bill when it was delivered to his desk last night - as promised.

This morning, the Senate voted 23 to 5 to override the veto. The Vermont House voted around 11 a.m. to also override the veto. The vote was 100-49.

Vermont is the first state to allow gay marriage without a court order!

Equality is slowly sweeping America!!!!!!!

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Progress!!!!!!!!

I hope there is a God because you are FUCKED when you get in front of him/ her! "Umm, yeah, I lived my life ignorantly, spreading hate about others for no reason except that I like to insert myself into peoples lives and bedrooms because I'm an ignorant fuck". YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!!!

      Re: knowitall
If you read his comment to some half-wit named lizzz (comment # 68) you will see it wouldn't be fair to call him bigoted. He was clearly offended by her ignorance and stupidity. His thoughts (comment # 83) indicate he's not against homosexuality per se, but rather the label of marriage as are unfortunately still too many Americans who believe marriage to be a religious term rather than a legal one. As an agnostic myself, I don't believe in the intermingling of church and state at all. When I married, I did it in a civil ceremony(no church ceremony) but that doesn't mean I'm not married. People must learn to separate the religious connotations of marriage to one of a merely legal term and the ceremony as the religious aspect. Then perhaps less Americans will be so opposed to the idea.

      Re: rascal
Yes, and also an eye for an eye, the world was once flat, woman was created with Adams rib….please. The bible was written in an age where ignorance to the natural world around the writers was rampant. We KNOW better now. Do you also believe in cutting off the arm of a thief? If you travel to parts of the Middle East, where the people are kept in ignorance, you may get your wish. Sharia laws sound right up your ally.

    13. 113

Re: JigSaw – Thanks for explaining yourself more fully. While we have different opinions I appreciate the benefit of seeing beyond the previous one-liner.
      +
I understand that some people feel words should have only one meaning, especially when it's a word their church is fond of, but the reality is English is a complex, multi-dimensional language and American culture has not evolved to favor a singular religious doctrine over others. I know in my heart god will be able to work with us both on this one.
      +
Is there actually a movement afoot to rename the union of a man and a woman who want to wed outside of a church's doctrine?

    14. 114

Re: rascal – Leviticus also says it's an abomination to get a tattoo, but tattoo parlors exist all over the place….remains to be seen if the tattooed get into heaven. Leviticus also says it's an abomination to wear cotton AND wool together…..quick call the fashion police.

    15. 115

Re: b a t k i s s – a movement? Not at all, should there be? I think so… This country has a strong start in the Church, and from the beginning we had seperation of Church and state. When man starts redefining something from the Church it should be renamed. Technically it has been to a civil cerimony although nobody uses that
      ..
Now not to get started on the man wrote the Bible argument, so man wrote the laws etc.
      ..
but I do have my beliefs and I know you have yours, when mine are comprimised I will let you know, as should you. But the manner we do so is also important. If we yell or act out nobody will listen. When you originally read my first comment I know you were upset, but you did handle yourself well and I appreciate that. Knowitall on the other hand, well he has a few issues. Taking shots at people without the whole story is unfair
      ..
Having said all this in such a little box, my last paragraph points out why there are so many divisions in this country. A lot of the problem is the way we interact, yes I like to have fun and be an asshole on this site. but I try not to offend anyone other than Hole. If someone says something totally rude, yes I will attack and yes I can and will offend them
      ..
Amazing with a little dialogue we can all get along

    16. 116

Re: rascal – and the bible also says judge not and ye shall not be judged. so basically you are judging people by your remarks

    17. 117

Jigsaw= Yes your first comment on here "dude" was "what is this world coming to?". Yes that does sound very civl and respectful to gay people and their friends and families. In a way I find people like Lizzy Borden more honest they might sound like a nut( the way Ann coulter or the Rush druggie do) but they just want to shock and awe.. You on the other hand really feel that your "feelings" about gay people marrying should triumph over gays people real and hard fought struggle for equality. Wow I guess I won't put you down in the column of COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVE . Look at how all the states that voted for any kind of gay rights ,unions or marriage are all Blue States. The red poor states of fascism and fundamentalism all vote against any kind of gay rights, any kind. So spare me your world is now not as wonderful. Stay in the dixie cesspool of hate where everyone thinks like you.

    18. 118

1 Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, 10 thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God
This tells me homosexuality is NOT an act that is acceptable. Criticize what I say, call me names, do whatever it is some of you feel you need to do, but there is no way to spin this action to make it right.

    19. 119

Yaaaay!!! proud to be from the 802!!!

    20. 120

      Re: knowitall
I don't think your gaining any points here by name calling and becoming angry. There has to be some reasonable dialogue to make people understand. The immediate reaction of many people is the same as Saw, until they have a chance to ponder on it. Save your aggravation and ire for people who are actively attacking the rights of others, not those who disagree with the concept. Even if sanity prevails and across the board the US allows gay marriage there still will be those that disagree for whatever reason. The bigger picture is explaining to all that disagree the importance of equal rights for all…not some rights for a few, no exclusions or exceptions. People don't realise that for every law that includes only some, MANY others in this society are alienated. That is why I can't stomach hearing 'Politically Correct' vernacular, because everyone has the right to an opinion but no one should have the right to change the laws to suit just themselves. Law should be all or nothing, everyone is the same…no one deserving special treatment due to race, religion, sex, etc.

    21. 121

      Re: shellmarie
This is not an issue of God or mortality, but one of Law. Everyone should have the fundamental freedom to decide to live within their own moral boundaries but under the same legal standard. You can't decide the fate or future of any individuals life.

    22. 122

Re: JigSaw – I don't believe I'm judging anyone by my statements. I'm just saying what is in the book that i believe in. God's word. There is only one that will do the judging.

Re: JigSaw – It's all good! As with most things in life, it's not what one says but how one says it.

Re: rascal – A whole truckload of superstitious bullshit! When are you assholes going to drop this age old collection of fairy tales (gay pun intended) and start living in the 21st century? Just because this crap has been repeated for centuries doesn't make it any more real than any other mythic religions. Grow up & look to the future!

    26. 126

Batkiss-To me its much more what one says, rather then how one says it. Who cares if someone is civil and sweet while claiming that gays should be imprisoned, Your bud Jigsaw says gays should not be allowed in the military because it would make him "uncomfortable showering". While his every-man tone seems to sway people like Xandria who is all over the map on all issues ,to me Id rather have an in your face activist for whats just ,then a fake civil tone saying lots of uncivil things, like Jigsaw. True while he has every right to espouse his views,bigotry,etc..those who find it revolting have their rights too.

    27. 127

I live in upstate NY on the VT border and I am so damn proud of them. I am a heterosexual female but it is my firm belief that everyone deserves equality and I will show my support by shopping and dining in Vermont more regularly.Re: dontnome

    28. 128

      Re: knowitall
All over the map on all issues? I think your reading comprehension is sadly lacking. This is the only issue I have discussed all day, and have not swayed my opinion. I shall try and put it in simpler terminology for you; the law should be the same for every person under all circumstances and marriage is a legal contract not a religious one. Once people (ie. the religious right, PC activists) start changing the law or are determined to preserve archaic laws to suit their individual needs, they may find one day that they will suffer the same discrimination on other matters. All people should be treated the same in the eyes of the law.

    29. 129

YAY! DICKS IN THE ASS FOR EVERYONE!

    30. 130

Re: knowitall – look i have been nice but you are an asshole, think of this, you are a straight man, are you going to shower with straight women? i think not, hence my gays in the military comment, you just dont get shit
      ..
Look lets be honest here, its gay people like you that give all gays a bad name. I dont hate, I speak my mind and right now you are pissing me off, and i am coming close to hating you and people like you, ignorant people that is
      ..
go suck another dick and be pround of it, cause to you its all about sucking and nothing more. you cant love cause you have no love in you dickhead
      ..
truth hurt? now just go fuck off and let people who want to work together do their stuff and you and yours who are going to sit there and bitch just go to hell. I want to leave my mark on the world and say yes i brought people together, but you asshole are nothing, just full of hate
      ..
now fuck off, i am done and you are nothing to me

      see you in other posts

    34. 134

      Re: JigSaw
I strongly agree….he almost had me swearing (and I rarely name-call as you know)at him and I'm on his side of this issue. knowitall makes it really difficult for people to have an open dialogue which is the only way for things to improve.

    35. 135

Jigsaw- Listen asshole you are leaving your mark in this world ,and hopefully that obituary will be written soon. You are a vile uneducated bigot who is quite content in watching and enjoying the discrimination that goes on in this world, You trailer-park jerk are not bringing people together by defending bigotry in the most vile way,but your friend Xandria gave you props for saying that gays are ruining your life because they are getting married. While she compliments you and rails about pc and double-talks, she at least is fuzzy about where she stands on anything. You on the other hand are quite clear, kick gay people out of the military for being gay, break up gay families ,because it make a sick phuc like you happy. Wow that is making people come together. Imagine.

    37. 137

I'm telling ya. Be careful what you wish for. When Obama's Arab muslim friends invade the USA they're going after the gays. Quite frankly, gay marriage is not offensive. It's just plain dumb. Too many gays act like 2 year olds to get what they want.

If I supported Jews during Hitlers reign ,I would'nt compliment a nazi for speaking well. Oh well ,I guess we gravitate towards those most like us.

"If I supported Jews during Hitlers reign ,I would'nt compliment a nazi for speaking well. Oh well ,I guess we gravitate towards those most like us."

I'm guessing you're not a history buff or you'd know that Oskar Schindler who was a standing member of the Nazi party managed to save 1200 jews from the concentration camps….he spoke well enough to save people that he received the highest honour from the Isreali government for his efforts. Off topic I know, but proves you just never know what people are capable of so don't judge. As for Saw, we often don't see eye-eye but he's right on many levels this time. I have the suspicion you are still insecure about your own sexuality that you accuse everyone of hating gays.

    77. 177

Xandria , I ve been to Israel and I have family from Germany so I"m glad you can take everything I said and put it out of context. I'm sorry I must have really missed what you say this Jigsaw scumbag said that was moving people together or understanding any battles that gays face, Other then speaking in general terms can you show me one thing posted by this lowlife that says that, I was reacting to his disgusting comments about " whats the world coming to" when he first posted on this topic. His disgusting comments about gays should be kicked out of the military because people like him (who never shower) don't feel comfortable around gay people showering. His comments about his rights are now being taken away because gay people can now marry in some more enlightened states. Or now his constant barrage of homophobic and anti-semetic posts. Again what part of him deserves a compliment that you paid him,and what part of me is out of line for giving this trailer trash shit. Just asking.

    78. 178

      Re: knowitall
How nice, I am also of Jewish descent on my fathers side but I chose to be agnostic/secular humanist in my beliefs. English is my second language as I was born in Bratislava, Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia) so your sarcasm pertaining to your German/Jewish relations is not lost on me but isn't necessary.
As for Saw, he normally likes to needle people and make crude comments to get people going….he does it to me rather often. His comments on this post (other than the first) were more of a dialogue than I've heard from him before. He was expressing his concerns (which are often repeated by others) but instead of slamming batkiss with whom he was having a discussion, he was actually communicating and at the end making a new friend and perhaps understanding a bit more….until you decided that communicating fears was a bad idea and took his (and my) comments WAAAYYYY out of context. People have to talk to change stereotypes to appreciate and maybe change opinions. You aren't going to change things name-calling and not allowing people a voice. It is give and take. It was touching when he spoke about people loving each other no matter their orientation, another point you missed, perhaps intentionally. He made a new friend with batkiss, you just made people angry…..so who do you think won this discussion in the end?

    79. 179

Xandria- Im half jewish as well. I understand your point and I guess I just mis-read you complimenting him. I stand by my view of him,not you. When a person gets slightly angry all the truth comes out,and it's not pretty with him, If this was an old person I would agree with you,but this is someone young and there is no excuse for this kind of ignorance and hate for someone sort of young, The exchange with Bat-kiss I think showed something decent about Bat-kiss not this Jigsaw puzzle. But i certainly don't appreciate some bigot airing his bigoted views and then complimenting them because they are sort of decent while insulting. I guess this Jigsaw(trying to say that name without laughing) must be quite a piece of work if this was him being much better. I think bigots have been accomadated too much in this country and their ugliness allowed to exist behind posturing about morality and religon, this lowlife just doesnt like gays or they make him uncomfortable and thats his basis for allowing discrimination. I'm also wary of anyone who always has to put down people has pc,that usually shows a rightwing streak of intolerance. My view on that last one.

Thank you, and I completely agree with you about intolerance and hate….that's why I was so puzzled why you kept mentioning my name suggesting I felt otherwise (or confused about it). I also apologise if I was rude in any way, but felt frustrated to be labeled possibly intolerant. Believe me and ask any of my friends, I hate people equally :) As for PC speak, after reading the insanity going on in GB (just read one of the daily newspapers) I personally feel that the objectives of this social engineering project (political correctness) are failing and perhaps hindering the original intent. People are becoming angry and resentful when told how to speak, what they can/cannot say, removal of certain words from the dictionary etc. and instead are turning on minorities. Point is people are entitled to their opinions, speech and thoughts but they should have no right to impose this on others, or take away similar rights of others. That's when the rules of law should apply and treat everyone equally. Sure, some will be pissed off but none will be able to suggest inequality. I'm quite happy to live in Canada where tolerance is less of an issue and our laws 'try' to include all members of this society. I keep wishing the same for the States, but from here it's looking a tad gloomy.

While I highly respect your anti-peta logo (they are vile animal murderers) your thoughts on marriage are a tad antiquated and blatantly dumb….

Re: knowitall – get it straight, what i said about gays in the military, do women and men shower together there? NO. so a gay man showering with a straight man would be like a man and woman showering together. GET IT?
      ..
And since i have soooo much room to type, you dont know my other opinions on that subject. there needs to be some type of seperation. why do i say this? because i have had many gay men come on to me in my life, and none of them took no for an answer
      ..
So yes I have a lot of anger towards those people, but I do not take it out on other gays
      ..
So if I was in the military taking a shower with a gay man i would be very very uncomfortable

Re: Xandria – and for the record, i typed a little too fast last night, I do not hate jews at all, I am however pro palestine, and do not appreciate the was isreal treats them at all

    86. 186

God also said" A MAN SHOULD NOT LAY DOWN WITH MANKIND AS HE DO WITH WOMAN KIND" but gay people dont seem to remember that or that God said "NO HOMOSEXUALITY" but people see what they wanna see to suit their ABOMINATION WAYS

    87. 187

Well if anyone comes onto you and you are a normal person ,you just take it as a compliment, should we have straight guys banned from the beach because they come onto straight women in the most inappropriate way and leer at them with lust,it would make most women more comfortable. The truth is you treat people with respect and that means everyone, I'll take the fact that you say so many gay guys have come onto you and didnt take no for an answer with a grain of salt,I dont know any gay guys that would do that ,but you somehow have encountered only those kind .hmm. Whatever deal with your own bigotries and learn to be more truthful. You cant treat people as second class citizens, because you dont like it, Think about it,

Frazier, we dont live in a theocracy like in Iran, we have many people who don't believe in the bible and thats what makes places like this country and europe and canada great, and places like iran a torture chamber for it's people. Secondly many christians ,churches and Jewish places of worship dont agree with you on what the bible says about gay people and feel that gays should be able to be married and leave in peace, I dont think the bible uses the word homo-sexuality at all. So is it really worth sinning as in lying to make a hateful point?

ok so before i go any further with this comment i just want everyone to know i have nothing against gay or lesbian people this is just what i think and im not trying to change anyones views i just want to say how i feel….and were all entitled to our own opinions.
ok….i personally think men and women were put on this earth to be together and to reproduce and to populate the earth. i think first, we legalize gay/lesbian marriage, which is not what marriage was intended for. marriage was created to join a MAN AND A WOMAN in matrimony…it never said anything about men and men or women and women. and second, whats next? gay marriage is legal so what if someone comes out and says i want to marry my dog i love my dog. are we gonna legalize man/dog woman/dog marriage?
its just how i view it and i know im gonna get bashed on here like i was harrassed on youtuve for saying how i feel but i need to speak my mind.

    91. 191

Re: speak – i totaly agree with you. whats next? if its equality for all, equality for EVERYONE people will be fighting to marry whoever they want, no matter who they are.

Re: bringinlexibackkk – WHO the fuck said so?

    93. 193

Re: knowitall – ok, i think the hate between us is gone, i do agree with what you said about men coming onto women, and there are laws for that too.
      ..
All i am saying about gays in the military is there needs to be some protection for people like me who would not feel comfortable. that is why i have a problem with them in the military, as it stands now
      ..
I have had gay men come onto me for years, the few that would not stop yes are the exception, but those people give the bad name
      ..
not enough space here to get into my beliefs, but I am not the asshole people think i am! I love to share ideas with people but i am not going to dump a lot into a box and not get a reply from anyone

Re: Lydia08 – ….what? who the fuck said so what? i dont understand what youre trying to say.

Re: knowitall – ok, and if i call you dude consider it a compliment…
      dude

I respect your opinion as I do xandria
      ..
      but you must respect mine
      ..
all i am saying is my beliefs as a hetero male who has an undying love for God and Jesus are being tested
      ..
male to female in church = marriage
male to female in court = union
same sex to same sex outside of church = civil union
      ..
      get it?
      ..
get it away from my church and my God and i will respect your choice
      ..
      got me?

Re: JigSaw – #132 Fine with mea culpa, err, me. As long as we are clear - my friends are not bullies.

    98. 198

Re: JigSaw – Hey! Yes, this is an old post but thought I would add to our dialogue with something that has come to my attention. Whereas your position has been that because of your religious beliefs you feel your rights are compromised by gay marriage. ('marriage started in the church, then the govt got involved…") Accepted, but not agreed…fine.
      =
Try this on for size, would you? Whereas there are religious denominations which do honor same sex marriages AND gay clergy, to not allow those believers to have marriage equality diminishes their religious beliefs.
      =
The duality of the argument you evoke implies the need for legal neutrality, it seems to me. As the conversation heats up here in NY it becomes increasing clear how important it is for EVERYONE to have the same options under the law, regardless of what church they belong to or how they practice their faith.
